Obituary of Sylvia Shepard

SYLVIA A. SHEPARD

Sylvia Artila Shepard, 91, formerly of Fort Scott, passed away at her home in Opolis, Kansas, Friday evening, September 14, 2018.

She was born November 29, 1926 in Milo, Missouri the daughter of Doris Sylvester and Beulah Ethel Chadd McClellan. She married Charles Allen Shepard January 24, 1942 in Nevada, Missouri, he preceded her in death, November 23, 1993.

She was a homemaker and during her life she lived for 25 years in Mapleton, Kansas and in Fort Scott for 21 years. She also worked for Keys Work Clothes. She loved gardening, fishing, camping, bowling and dancing.

Sylvia is survived by a son, Wayne Shepard and wife, Cheryl of Kansas City, Missouri, two nieces whom she cared for when they were younger, Clara Williams of Lamar, Missouri and Mary Sue Pirkl and husband Jim of Belle Plaine, Iowa; two granddaughters, Angel and Victoria Shepard, a step-grandson, Levi Morris and a great-grandson, Ryker Morris, as well as several other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Allen, she was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Jack, Rufus, and Robert McClellan.

Graveside services will be held at the Olive Branch Cemetery near Milo, Missouri at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2018 under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home of Fort Scott, Kansas.

Family and friends will meet at the Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday and leave for the Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.

Obituary Of Mary Alice Foulk

Mary Alice Foulk, age 90, a resident of Winfield, MO, passed away Monday afternoon, September 10, 2018, at home.

 

She was born June 21, 1928, in Conway, MO, the daughter of Sylvester and Dorothy Lynch. She married Walter Foulk in September 1955 and together they had four children (Connie, Lydia, Andrew, and Lora).

Mary was a life-long homemaker whose selfless nature meant she always put everyone’s needs above her own and never complained. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering and spending time with loved ones. Mary lived most of her life in Springfield, MO, until she moved to St Charles County, MO, in 2008 to live with her daughter Lora.

Survivors include her husband, Walter Foulk of Arcadia, KS; three children, Lydia Baker of Crane, MO, Andrew Foulk of Springfield, MO and Lora Pratt of Winfield, MO; seven grandchildren (and respective spouses); eleven great-grandchildren; a sister in law, Sharon Lynch of Elkland, MO; and many loved nieces, nephews and greats.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Dorothy Lynch of Elkland, MO; an infant son (Connie); a sister, Margaret Barber of Elkland, MO; and a brother, James Lynch, also of Elkland, MO.

Although she is gone, she is not forgotten.

We love you and will see you again one day.

Obituary of Carlene Rinehart

Carlene Marie Kruger Rinehart, 82, formerly of Fort Scott, more recently of Rusk, Texas, passed away at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas. She was born January 19, 1936 in Fort Scott, Kansas the daughter of Carl William and Mary Inez Shinn Kruger. She married Edward Cale Rinehart April 20, 1953 in Platt City, Missouri, he preceded her in death August 29, 2012.

Carlene was a Sales Secretary serving Sears’, JC Penny’s, and Montgomery Ward’s totaling 50 years, and lived in Kansas, Florida and Hawaii during the decade of the 1950’s, in California during the 1960’s, back to Kansas during the 1970’s and Texas during the 1980’s and 1990’s. She returned to Fort Scott for a few years in the 2010’s but recently moved back to Texas to be near some of her children and grandchildren. Carlene was a member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle while she lived in Fort Scott.

She is survived by two daughters, Jeanann Sumner and husband, Greg of Elkhart, Texas and Carrie Baker and husband, Mike of Trinity, Texas, a son, Gregory Rinehart and wife Violet of Rusk, Texas, a brother, Gary Kruger and wife Carla of Montgomery, Texas. She was also blessed with an abundance of loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Edward, she was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mary (Shinn) Kruger and a son, Eddie Rinehart.

Funeral services for Carlene M. Rinehart will be at 11:00 am, Monday, September 17, 2018 at the Fort Scott National Cemetery #1 under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with the Rev. Pastor Paul Rooks officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until 10:45 am on Monday, September 17, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home before leaving for the Cemetery. Obituary of Danny Ernest Hall

Daniel Ernest Hall, age 45 of Fort Scott, Kansas passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at Mercy Hospital, following a battle with cancer.

 Danny was born in Fort Scott on April 29, 1973, to Ernest Hall and Patricia Goltra Hall. He married Amanda Cowen on November 30, 2002, at Community Christian Church in Fort Scott.  

He graduated from Bolivar High School in 1991 then received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and education from Pittsburg State University.  He began teaching biology and coaching in Bolivar in 1995. He then taught and coached 4 years in Frontenac High School.  Danny thoroughly enjoyed coaching football.

 Leaving education, he pursued his first dream in the medical field.  Danny began as an EMT for the Linn County Ambulance Service.  Danny received his paramedic licensure from Johnson County Community College. In 2015, He was awarded the White Stars of Life from the American Ambulance Association in Washington D.C. for ambulance professionals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in service to their community. Danny most recently served as the EMS manager for Mercy Hospital of Fort Scott.

 Danny was an active member of Community Christian Church where he attended for 16 years.

 His hobbies were deer and turkey hunting, carpentry, golfing, target shooting, archery, KU basketball, and watching the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.

Danny enjoyed spending time with family and friends during special holidays and events. Christmas was Danny’s favorite holiday. 

Surviving are his wife, Amanda, and two sons, Cole and Caleb, five sisters Denise Patton (John) of Osage Beach, Missouri; Christie Hilton (John) of Manassas, Virginia; Stephanie Myers (Jake) of Morrisville, Missouri; Laura Hall of Bolivar, Missouri; Erin Hall of Springfield, Missouri.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Patricia Goltra Hall, and his father, Ernest (Ernie) Hall, grandparents Robert J. Goltra Sr., Ernest Bernard and Eileen J. Hall.

Rev. Dusty Drake and Rev. Mike Armstrong will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Thursday, September 13th, at the Community Christian Church, 1919 S. Horton, Fort Scott

. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Scott.

Obituary of Mary Helen Green

Mary Helen Green, age 85, a resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Tuesday morning, September 4, 2018, at Medicalodge of Ft. Scott.

She was born June 8, 1933, in Callao, MO, the daughter of Floyd and Crystal Blackburn Ham. She graduated from Arcadia high school with the class of 1951. She worked for Western Insurance Company in Ft. Scott. She married Johnnie Bean on June 26, 1951. Together they owned and operated Fort Scott Beverage and Beverage Express. From 1954 to 1999, they were the local distributor for Anheiser Busch.

Johnnie preceded her in death on June 4, 1998. She married Harvey Green on July 22, 2000.

Mary Helen was an extremely giving person who went out of her way for anyone in need. She loved to travel if even for a local sightseeing ride. She enjoyed meeting daily with her friends at the donut shop and other restaurants. She was a former member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband Harvey of the home; a brother, Richard Ham; a sister, Geneva Sue Ham; step-children Tim Green, Harvey Green, Jr., Susan Leichter, Robert Green, Karen Winters, Darlene Atkinson, and Janice Zickefoose; numerous grandchildren, special niece, Melinda Goff; special great-niece Jamie Graham; and special great-great-niece Blakely Graham.

Besides her first husband, Johnnie, she was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Bean; two step-daughters, Deborah Jones and Ida Rene’ Davis; two brothers, Howard and Dale Ham; and a sister, Dorothy Moore.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 8th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Friday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Obituary of Peyton R. Riedel

Peyton Ryne Riedel, 25, of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away on August 28th, 2018 in Colorado Springs as a result of a tragic automobile accident.

On November 14, 1992, in Wichita, Kansas the Lord blessed the home of Stephen and Pamela Riedel (Simons) with the gift of a daughter. She was the center of their life and brought much joy to their family. Peyton spent her early school years attending St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School in Wichita and graduated high school in 2011 with honors from Fort Scott High School in Fort Scott, Kansas.

Peyton was a vivacious, loving, free-spirited young woman with a bright future ahead of her. She loved all things purple, softball, and animals; particularly her French Bulldog, Lulu. She had a lifelong softball career and played while attending college at Newman University in Wichita where she received her Bachelor Degrees in Psychology and Criminal Justice. This fall would mark her third year as an Assistant Softball Coach at Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, CO. Her love for athletics fueled her passion to further her education. She graduated in December of 2017 with a Master’s degree in Sports Psychology from the University of the Rockies. She had a dream to work at the Olympic Training Facility as a Sports Psychologist and was preparing her resume to pursue that passion this fall.

Peyton was fun and energetic, always able to put a smile on your face. She was adored by her family, especially her second cousins, and all the children she cared for. Her warm laughter and quick wit will be greatly missed and always remembered.

She is survived by her mother, Pamela Riedel of Kansas City, Missouri, her father, Stephen Riedel of Wichita, Kansas, her paternal grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Cleland and Mary Allen, paternal grandfather, Robert Riedel, uncle, Billy Simons, and cousin Gabriel Hoover.

Visitation will be Monday, September 3rd, 2018, from 5-7pm at the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 South Main, Fort Scott, Kansas 66701.

Services will be Tuesday, September 4th, at 11 am at the same location.

Obituary of Edwin Leonard

Edwin Gilbert Leonard, age 78, a former resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, and more recently of Mesa, Arizona, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018, in Mesa.
He was born August 14, 1940, in Ft. Scott, the son of Wilbur H. Leonard and Hattie L. Francis Leonard.  He married Leanna Corine Wise on July 31, 1960, in Ft. Scott.  Ed and Leanna moved from Ft. Scott to Arizona in 1969.  Ed had worked in Arizona as a carpenter. 
 
Survivors include his wife, Leanna, of the home in Mesa and a son, Wayne Leonard of Chandler, Arizona.  Also surviving are five sisters, Francis Brown, of Kansas City, Kansas, Berniece Calame, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Linda Defebaugh, of Nevada, Missouri, Wanda Leonard of Ft. Scott, Kansas and Dorothy Wild, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and a brother, Larry Leonard, of Owasso, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Albert Warren Leonard and Hubert Leonard and three sisters, Mary Margaret Leonard, Nadine Wurtz and Juanita Monroe.

Obituary Of Jack Kendrick, Sr.

Jack Edward Kendrick, Sr. age 82, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the Medicalodge in Ft. Scott.
He was born February 20, 1936, at Ft. Scott, the son of Russell Allen Kendrick, Sr. and Wilma Jean Blair Kendrick.
Jack served with the United States Navy during both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.  He retired after twenty years of service.  Following his retirement from the Navy, Jack worked for both the Ft. Scott and Humboldt, Kansas police departments.  He later worked as a truck driver for many years and eventually taught truck driving at Ft. Scott Community College.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Olson Frary Burkhart Post #1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
 
Survivors include a daughter, Nicki Kendrick (Joel), of Nevada, Missouri and sons, Paul Kendrick (Cheryl) of Colorado, Roy Dale Davenport, Jr. (Kathy) of Ft. Scott, Randall Charles Cox Rodriguez (Tammy) of Joplin, Missouri, and Curtis Davenport (Diane) also of Joplin and several grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are many beloved cousins and friends.
 He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Marlene Kendrick, a son, Jack Kendrick Jr., his parents and a brother Russell A. Kendrick, Jr.
 
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 P.M. on Saturday, September 1 at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
Following visitation, there will be cremation and a graveside service will be held at 12:30 P.M. Friday, September 7 at the U. S. National Cemetery in Ft. Scott.
Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy Honor Guard.  Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association and may be left in the care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Obituary of Donald “Fred” Savage

Donald “Fred” Savage, 80, of Fulton, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, August 27, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, Kansas.

He was born February 4, 1938, in Harrison, Arkansas, the son of Thomas Franklin and Rita Myrle (Willis) Savage. He married Joan Hays April 3, 1957, and she preceded him in death August 22, 2017.

Fred is survived by his children, Joseph F. Savage, of Ottawa, Kansas, and Kenneth D. Savage, of Hammond, Kansas; two brothers, Raymond Joe Savage, of Fort Scott, Kansas, and Franklin Savage, of Rantool, Kansas; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Joan, Fred was also preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Ed Savage.

Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct graveside services 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the West Liberty Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.
