Joe Dean Marlow, age 68, a resident of Iola, KS, died Thursday, October 4, 2018, at the Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, KS.

He was born January 9, 1950, in Gas, KS, the son of Clinton Dean Marlow and Nadja Allen Marlow.

Joe was an outstanding athlete in school, playing football, basketball and baseball. He graduated from Crest High School with the class of 1968.

He served in Vietnam with the U. S. Army from 1969 to 1970.

He married Josephine Alcantar on March 12, 1971, in Iola.

Joe worked as a truck driver for Berg in Iola then later for Midland. When they closed, he drove for Valu Merchandisers in Ft. Scott, KS. To his credit, Joe drove over four million miles without an accident.

He enjoyed reading Stephen King novels, watching TV, listening to music, and traveling with his wife. He was an avid New England Patriots and Boston Celtics fan through the years.

Joe loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Josephine of the home; a son, Jeff Marlow and significant other Lisa Jensen, Tampa, FL; a daughter, Jenni Ashworth and significant other Bryan Johnson, Iola, KS; four brothers, Richard Marlow and wife Nancy, Olathe, KS, William Marlow, Uniontown, KS, Dana Marlow and wife Janet, Parsons, KS, and Kyle Knight and wife Shayla, Uniontown, KS; a sister, Cheryl Marlow, Iola, KS; Step-siblings Donna and Henry Ross, Moran, KS, Wendy and Shea Thompson, Bayard, KS, Linda Korte, LaHarpe, KS, Raymond and Judi Knight, Zionsville, IN, Tim and Monica Knight, Oroville, WA, and Paul and Connie Knight, Mildred, KS; five grandchildren, Jessika Marlow, Ellen Huddleston, Danni Rains, Jeffrey Ashworth, and Jessa Ashworth; one great grandson, Dimitri Cruz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a step-brother, Carl Wayne Knight; an infant niece, Angel Dawn Marlow; and his parents.

HAROLD COLEMAN

Harold Dean Coleman, 69, passed away Tuesday evening October 2, 2018, at Mercy Hospital. He was born January 22, 1949, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Harold Howard and Lavon Hazeldean (Clayton) Coleman.

Harold attended Fulton schools until they closed, and then finished up at DeSoto High School, graduating in 1967. He also went to Pittsburg State University’s welding school.

Harold served in the US Army and served many years in law enforcement. In 1984, Harold was elected Bourbon County Sheriff, a position he continued to fill for 24 years until his retirement in 2008. He was also a Bourbon County Commissioner following his retirement as Sheriff.

Harold is survived by son Stacy Coleman and wife Lenda, of Blue Springs, Missouri; daughter, Deana Wade and husband Brian, of Fort Scott; brother Garyl Coleman and wife Patty, of Prescott, Kansas; four grandchildren, Aaron and Adam Blaine, and Kyenne and Makyn Wade.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Truman Coleman, and his sister-in-law, Judy Coleman.

Following cremation, Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct graveside services, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at the Fort Scott National Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Military Honors at the cemetery will be conducted by the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Detail.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, October 9, 2018, at the funeral home from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

William “Willie” Reed Higginbotham, age 71, resident of Mapleton, KS, went to be with his Savior on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at his home.

He was born July 18, 1947, in San Saba, TX, the son of William Hardy Higginbotham and Ezra Florese “Bobby” Mabry Higginbotham.

He married Vickie Tinkle on December 18, 1970, in Center, TX.  They later divorced.

He married Lesley Luce on August 8, 1997, in Kansas City, KS.

Willie worked for Otis Elevator in Dallas, TX for many years as a field manager.

After moving to Ft. Scott, KS, in 1998, he worked 10 years for Shepherd Team Auto Plaza followed by Cox Motor Company, Pleasanton, KS, for 8 years.

When not working, he enjoyed “piddling” on outdoor projects.  Willie was a big football fan, especially the Dallas Cowboys.  He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren with all their activities.

Survivors include his wife Lesley of the home; his mother, Bobby Higginbotham, Granbury, TX; three daughters, April Duffey and husband Jason, Louisville, CO, Condra Ables and husband Darin, Alvarado, TX, and Rachael Martin and husband Tyler, Redfield, KS; a son, Adam Worley and wife Jessica, Richmond, MO; a brother, Sandy Higginbotham and wife Holly, Antlers, OK; a sister, Kim Miller and husband Bryan, Bluffdale, TX; five grandchildren, Addie Martin, Andrew Martin, Katie Martin, Juley Martin and Arianna Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Higginbotham, a nephew, Christopher Higginbotham; and his father.

Rev. DAVID LEE HORNADAY

David Lee Hornaday, 86, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2018, at his home in Moreno Valley, California.

He was born April 8, 1932, in Linn County, Kansas, the son of Compton Alvis and Eva Galora (Groseclose) Hornaday.

He married Eleanor Louise Scheel, and after thirty-three years of marriage, she preceded him in death on October 26, 1988.

David was an electrical engineer and worked for Pacific Bell for over thirty years.

Survivors include his two sons, Jeff Hornaday and his wife Alma, Al Hornaday and his wife Maria; his five grandchildren, including Carlos Felix, A.J., Alexandro, David, and Samuel Hornaday; and his two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2018, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with burial following at the Evergreen Cemetery. Thelma Wynona Vann, age 93, a resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Monday, September 24, 2018, at Medicalodge of Ft. Scott.

She was born April 23, 1925, in Harding, KS, the daughter of Johnson and Agnes Willard Vann. She attended Forest Dale School through 8^th grade. She moved from Harding to Ft. Scott in 1952. In 1968, she obtained her GED at Ft. Scott Community College.

Thelma worked for 27 years as a certified Lab Tech for Mercy Hospital. She was a member of Mt. Olive Church of God in Christ, where she served as Treasurer and Sunday school teacher for over 60 years. She took up playing piano for the church at the age of 90. Thelma continued driving until a year ago. She also enjoyed traveling, having visited London and Paris in 1972.

Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Vann, Ft. Scott; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters.

Elder Roger Harris, Pastor Troy Webb, and Co-Pastor Agnes Walton will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 29^th, at the Mt. Olive Church of God in Christ.

Private burial will be in the Mapleton Cemetery.

Lindsey Louise Lewis, age 31 of Fort Scott Kansas who resided in Dallas, Texas passed away on Monday, September 17th, 2018 of an unexpected aortic dissection. 

She was born to the late Jerry Lewis and Kitty Mullane Lewis on June 21st, 1987.

Lindsey was a 2005 graduate of Fort Scott High School before attending Washington University in Saint Louis and then finishing her bachelors degree in Political Science and History at the University of Kansas.  She went on to graduate law school in the top 10% of her class earning her Juris Doctor at the same institution in Lawrence.  At the time of her death she was an associate attorney at Downs and Stanford PC in Dallas.

She was a member of MENSA, Phi Kappa Phi and Delta Epsilon Iota (academic honorary societies), and Dallas Young Lawyers. 

Lindsey enjoyed international travel, sour candy, her cat Chubby, pool lounging with a cocktail, Blue Apron and spending time with family and friends.

Lindsey is survived by her mother, Kitty Lewis and her three sisters Tiffany Lewis, her husband Shaya Ansari and their two children; Maureen Lewis Stukenberg, her husband Matthew Stukenberg and their four children; and Aimee Lewis.  She is also survived by her significant other Yogie Phongsavath.

LINDSEY LOUISE LEWIS

Lindsey Louise Lewis, 31, formerly of Fort Scott, passed away unexpectedly Monday evening September 17, 2018, in Dallas, Texas.

The family will hold a visitation Sunday morning, September 23, 2018, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life and Sharing Memories from 11:00-12:00 p.m. at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. William Dee Eastwood, age 90, a resident of rural Bronson, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2018, at the Guest Home Estates in Ft. Scott, Kansas.

He was born October 1, 1927, in Allen County, Kansas, the son of Henry Edward Eastwood and Esther Marie Jackson Eastwood.

Dee served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He married Stella Irene Phillips on August 10, 1950. She preceded him in death on September 3, 1976.

He later married Erma F. Sproat on June 30, 1978.

Dee was a farmer, a cattleman and an oil producer. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite Consistory and the Mirza Shrine as well as the Iola Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Erma; and three daughters, Linda Mefford and husband, Don, of Mound City, Kansas, Dea Ann Kuhn and husband, Allen and Cheri Smith and husband, Larry, all of Wichita, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Shon Mefford, Jason Mefford (Cindy), Kelsey Kuhn (Ben), Nick Smith (Christine), Brandon Smith, Adam Smith (Amanda) and Suzie Smith (Anthony) and several great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Shinn and a brother, Wilbur Eastwood.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 1st at the Cheney Witt Bronson Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time on Monday at the chapel.
