Trinity Lutheran Church Oktoberfest Oct. 27

Sausages. Submitted photo.
With the German heritage associated with the Lutheran Church, 23 years ago, Trinity Lutheran Church decided to host an Oktoberfest as a fundraiser for the church.
In connection with Reformation Sunday, the members serve up some of their grandmother’s or great grandmother’s German dishes.
Three entrees are offered and you get all three — not a choice of one.
Bratwurst, bierocks and Reuben Casserole are the three entrees.
While the first two are traditionally German, the last one, the Reuben Casserole, is one of the most popular of the entrees.
Traditional German side dishes of sauerkraut, potato salad, and green beans accompany the entrees.
And what is a church feed without the infamous “church lady” desserts? Your choice of a piece of pie or slice of cake to end your meal.
Reformation Sunday and Oktoberfest fall on October 27, this year.
The church will serve the food from 4 to 7 p.m.
Tickets are $8.00 in advance or $10.00 at the door.
Children are $4.
For advance tickets call the church office 620-223-3596, 8 to 11:30  a.m. Monday through Friday.
In the spirit of giving, part of this year’s proceeds will go to Care to Share.

Fort Scott Community Closet Moving Forward

Clothing is awaiting completion of the Fort Scott Community Closet shed. Pictured is clothing that has been donated, cleaned and stored in plastic bags.

The second organizational meeting of the Fort Scott Community Closet met on Oct. 1 and officers were elected.

Carol Oakleaf is the president and Lori Lovelace is the secretary/treasurer.

Carol Oakleaf, left, and Lori Lovelace show the donation can for clothing to the Fort Scott Community Closet which is located in the Fort Scott Washateria.

“It’s a good representation, representing a lot of churches,” Lovelace said. “It’s for the whole county.”

At the meeting, guidelines were set up to distribute clothing to those in most need, Lovelace said.

People will be referred by organizations in the county to receive a voucher to get the clothing.

“Vouchers will be distributed to anyone who deals with people in need and crisis, to get names,” Lovelace said. This includes churches and other organizations.

“Then we will know what they need and a volunteer will be available to work with them,” Lovelace said. “People can come one-on-one with a volunteer to the closet.”

The community closet is located in a shed on the property of Fort Scott Washateria, 501 S. National.

Donations of clothing are already being accepted at the laundromat and clothing has been cleaned in preparation for the distribution which Lovelace anticipates to be in this month into November.

The laundromat donates the cleaning  of the clothing.

Once the shed that will house the closet is finished, the clothing will be arranged for recipients to come in and choose what they need with a volunteer.

“The shed is not done yet,” Lovelace said. Flooring, painting, heat/air conditioning, and electricity are on the agenda to be completed.

Lori Lovelace shows the shed that is nearing completion for the Fort Scott Community Closet.

Once the initial batch of donated clothing is distributed to those who are in need, the public can get one outfit per person.

“After Thanksgiving, there will be a community day,” she said. “I will advertise the open number of hours and volunteers will man it.”

Aglow Meets Sept. 3

Join us for the Fort Scott Aglow Lighthouse Monthly gathering at

Rodeway Inn Conference Room, 101 State St., Fort Scott, KS

Tues. Sept 3, 2019 at 6:30-?

An interdenominational opportunity for like-minded believers to come together for worship, prayer, grow in God’s word, and to meet needs in Bourbon County.

We welcome our guest speaker: Linda Kay Woodworth.

Woodworth is the Kansas State Prayer Coordinator for Aglow International.

She has spent 35 years in Aglow, having held several positions on the North Area Aglow Board. Linda Kay lives in Topeka with her husband Bill.

She is a former high school language arts teacher, working now during the legislative session at the state capital as a senator’s office assistant.

At the age of 31, Woodworth found herself a single mother raising two small daughters, when she discovered Aglow. She loves to introduce people to the Holy Spirit and does so every month in the ladies’ prison.

She believes that the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and JOY in the Holy Ghost. Romans 14:17. KJV.

Linda Kay and her daughter, Amber, will present a generation to generation message on what God is doing in their lives today. After a horrific motorcycle accident sent Amber and her husband into emergency surgery with numerous broken bones, God’s kingdom power showed up in the reality of Romans 8:11 KJV, and quickened their healing process. The doctor said it would take two years to heal.  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. The quickening spirit of God is available for us! Come hear and see what the Lord has done.

Incredible testimony for the whole family! Feel free to invite some friends.

Fort Scott Aglow Lighthouse desires to bring the body of Christ together, (men and women and the youth) We are also in the preparation stage of expanding the Kingdom of God through centers that transform lives. We are getting food, clothing, pregnancy supplies, and shelter ready. Donations welcome!
