Christian summer camps have impacted several local youths to serve on mission trips.
“Some of these students are from the Fort Scott Church of the Nazarene and some from Community Christian Church partnering together,” Tonya Cliffman, mom to one of the students, said. “The same group that traveled together for Denver Christ In Youth, last summer.”
The youth will be having a combined fundraiser for their mission trips Sunday, Dec. 8 at Community Christian Church.
The meal begins on Sunday at noon and there will be a pie auction at 12:45 p.m., followed by bingo at 1 pm.
Bingo cards can be purchased for $10 and this packet will cover all of the games played.
“This group, while hosting individual fundraisers, have teamed together for the fundraising event planned for December 8th at Community Christian Church,” Tonya Cliffman said. “The travelers are hosting ‘Missions Meal’. A meal of baked potato and soup for a free-will donation.”
” Some of these soups will be provided by the Ladle Wars competition—a competition of local people interested in entering the contest of whom has the best crock pot of soup…. the winner will receive a Golden Ladle,” Tonya Cliffman said.
“This will be a day of food, fellowship, and fun,” Tonya Cliffman said.
The students have been fundraising individually as well.
“Each student is actively fundraising for their trip in various ways, selling salsa, pies, M & M’s, blankets, dog treats and more,” Tonya Cliffman said. “Each student has an adult chaperone partnering with them for these trips.”
One of the students, Bailey Cliffman, has also started a local compassion ministry.
“This young lady that goes to my church is making backpacks for children in foster care,” Malinda Bailey said. ” I think it’s pretty amazing.”
“Last summer Bailey attended CIY in Denver, where the idea of B Bags formed (her local compassion ministry),” Tonya Cliffman said.

With the German heritage associated with the Lutheran Church, 23 years ago, Trinity Lutheran Church decided to host an Oktoberfest as a fundraiser for the church.
In connection with Reformation Sunday, the members serve up some of their grandmother’s or great grandmother’s German dishes.
Three entrees are offered and you get all three — not a choice of one.
Bratwurst, bierocks and Reuben Casserole are the three entrees.
While the first two are traditionally German, the last one, the Reuben Casserole, is one of the most popular of the entrees.
Traditional German side dishes of sauerkraut, potato salad, and green beans accompany the entrees.
And what is a church feed without the infamous “church lady” desserts? Your choice of a piece of pie or slice of cake to end your meal.
Reformation Sunday and Oktoberfest fall on October 27, this year.
The church will serve the food from 4 to 7 p.m.
Tickets are $8.00 in advance or $10.00 at the door.
Children are $4.
For advance tickets call the church office 620-223-3596, 8 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
In the spirit of giving, part of this year’s proceeds will go to Care to Share.
There will be an inter-denominational praise and prayer gathering at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24th at the Ellis Fine Arts Center at Fort Scott Community College, 2108 S. Horton.
There will be no promotion of any candidate, no political speakers.
This is gathering people of faith to ask God to bless our community and our nation.

The second organizational meeting of the Fort Scott Community Closet met on Oct. 1 and officers were elected.
Carol Oakleaf is the president and Lori Lovelace is the secretary/treasurer.
“It’s a good representation, representing a lot of churches,” Lovelace said. “It’s for the whole county.”
At the meeting, guidelines were set up to distribute clothing to those in most need, Lovelace said.
People will be referred by organizations in the county to receive a voucher to get the clothing.
“Vouchers will be distributed to anyone who deals with people in need and crisis, to get names,” Lovelace said. This includes churches and other organizations.
“Then we will know what they need and a volunteer will be available to work with them,” Lovelace said. “People can come one-on-one with a volunteer to the closet.”
The community closet is located in a shed on the property of Fort Scott Washateria, 501 S. National.
Donations of clothing are already being accepted at the laundromat and clothing has been cleaned in preparation for the distribution which Lovelace anticipates to be in this month into November.
The laundromat donates the cleaning of the clothing.
Once the shed that will house the closet is finished, the clothing will be arranged for recipients to come in and choose what they need with a volunteer.
“The shed is not done yet,” Lovelace said. Flooring, painting, heat/air conditioning, and electricity are on the agenda to be completed.
Once the initial batch of donated clothing is distributed to those who are in need, the public can get one outfit per person.
“After Thanksgiving, there will be a community day,” she said. “I will advertise the open number of hours and volunteers will man it.”

A corn maze is coming in October, so add this to the family bucket list of fun things to do this fall.
Rinehart Christian Church is having a corn maze every Saturday in October (5,12,19, and 26) from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
“Other activities include: hayrides, corn pit, inflatables, fire pits, pumpkin painting, and games,” said Rinehart Church Youth Pastor Elijah Pierson. “This is a free event for the whole community, including a hot dog lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. each Saturday.”
The address is 9443 S 900 Rd Richards, MO 64778.
Here are directions from Fort Scott: Take 69 Hwy. north to the Hammond exit. Then go east two miles on Soldier Rd. The road turns to the north; follow the blacktop (245th St.) to the stop sign (Valley Road); then go east. This becomes Hwy. D in Missouri. Continue on Hwy. D through Stotesbury to 900 Rd. Go South 0.5 miles to the church.
The design of the corn maze is by Precision Mazes, he said.
“We believe families are important, so we want to provide an event in the community that can be shared and enjoyed by the whole family,” Pierson said. “We know that one of the best ways we can serve God is by serving families.”
“Rinehart exists to ‘Love God, Live Like Jesus, and Lift Others’,” Pierson said “Our church is full of people of all ages and backgrounds and our members belong to many different communities including Nevada, Fort Scott, Butler, Sheldon, and many more. We welcome anyone who wishes to come worship with us at our 10:30 AM service.”
Join us for the Fort Scott Aglow Lighthouse Monthly gathering at
Rodeway Inn Conference Room, 101 State St., Fort Scott, KS
Tues. Sept 3, 2019 at 6:30-?
An interdenominational opportunity for like-minded believers to come together for worship, prayer, grow in God’s word, and to meet needs in Bourbon County.
We welcome our guest speaker: Linda Kay Woodworth.
Woodworth is the Kansas State Prayer Coordinator for Aglow International.
She has spent 35 years in Aglow, having held several positions on the North Area Aglow Board. Linda Kay lives in Topeka with her husband Bill.
She is a former high school language arts teacher, working now during the legislative session at the state capital as a senator’s office assistant.
At the age of 31, Woodworth found herself a single mother raising two small daughters, when she discovered Aglow. She loves to introduce people to the Holy Spirit and does so every month in the ladies’ prison.
She believes that the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and JOY in the Holy Ghost. Romans 14:17. KJV.
Linda Kay and her daughter, Amber, will present a generation to generation message on what God is doing in their lives today. After a horrific motorcycle accident sent Amber and her husband into emergency surgery with numerous broken bones, God’s kingdom power showed up in the reality of Romans 8:11 KJV, and quickened their healing process. The doctor said it would take two years to heal. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. The quickening spirit of God is available for us! Come hear and see what the Lord has done.
Incredible testimony for the whole family! Feel free to invite some friends.
Fort Scott Aglow Lighthouse desires to bring the body of Christ together, (men and women and the youth) We are also in the preparation stage of expanding the Kingdom of God through centers that transform lives. We are getting food, clothing, pregnancy supplies, and shelter ready. Donations welcome!
