Obituary of Louise Hall

 

Louise G. Hall, age 91, resident of Uniontown, KS, more recently of Arma, KS, died Friday, November 25, 2022, at the Girard Medical Center, Girard, KS.

She was born March 10, 1931, in Girard, the daughter of Anton and Anna Hober Gobl.

She liked working with the family’s Hereford cattle.  Louise graduated from Uniontown High School.

She married Marvin Hall on May 24, 1952, in Ft. Scott, KS.  He preceded her in death on May 9, 2011.

She worked for Western Insurance Company in Ft. Scott before beginning with Citizens National Bank where she worked for many years.

Louise enjoyed traveling with Marvin to horse pulls and horse trades.  She also enjoyed vegetable gardening and going to family activities and ballgames.  She liked watching baseball games (especially the Royals) and golf on television.  She also liked attending dances just to watch others having a good time.

 

Survivors include her 3 children, Gary Hall (Jackie), Redfield, KS, Brenda Gleason (Kevin) Uniontown, KS, and Linda Essary (Marty), Marshfield, MO; 5 grandchildren, Tarin Essary, Caleb Essary (Stephanie), Tyler Hall (Heather), Reed Gleason (Kenzie), and Chase Gleason (Aubrey); 12 great grandchildren, Abigail Chilson, Raydn Chilson, Avery Chilson, Gracie Essary, Gunner Essary, Kiersten Akers, Maggie Akers, Derek Akers, Landry Gleason, Wade Hall, Bristyl Hall, and Jessa Hall; and one more on the way; and a sister-in-law Joyce Gobl

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Gobl, and her parents.

 

Rev. Marty Dewitt will conduct funeral services at 2:30 PM Friday, December 2nd

Burial will follow in the Mt. Orum Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Obituary of Mary Alice Adamson

Mary Alice Adamson, age 80, a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the Presbyterian Village.

She was born July 31, 1942, in Fort Scott, the daughter of Ernest Daniel Henderson and Margaret Eugenia Johnson Henderson.

Mary graduated from Blue Mound High School. She married Jack Adamson on January 11, 1964 in Miami, Oklahoma.

She loved to attend garage sales, crochet and visit with friends and family on the telephone. Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

 

Mary is survived by her children, Doug Adamson and wife Carol, of Fort Scott, Melissa Davis and husband Ron, of Butler, Missouri; grandchildren, Joshua Adamson and wife Stacey, of Wichita, Kansas, Ashley Adamson (Carl) of Fort Scott, Kansas, Ethan Clark and wife Amanda, of Paola, Kansas; step-grandchildren, Terri Manley, Cody Davis, Ronna Davis; great-grandchildren, Kasen and Atley Clark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack, and a sister Judy Long.

 

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct funeral services at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 29th 2022 at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Centerville Cemetery

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until service time at the Chapel on Tuesday.

Obituary of Robert Belknap

Robert Harvey Belknap 26464510

Robert Harvey Belknap, age 81, resident of Fort Scott, KS, died Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO.

He was born September 14, 1941, in Tulsa, OK, the son of James H. Belknap, Sr. and Thelma F. Warwick Belknap. Bob attended school in Chetopa, KS from 1st grade through mid-term 11th grade. He and his mother moved to Denver, CO where he graduated from West Denver High School in 1959. While working for Ceebuzz Supermarket, he was encouraged by his employer to join the Marines.

Bob joined the Marines in 1960 and served for 4 years, 2 months, 10 days, and 4 hours, which he repeated numerous times to his family. While stationed in Hawaii he was a radar tech, a sharpshooter, as well as a lifeguard and played basketball.

Upon his return to Fort Scott to join his mother in 1964, he enrolled at FSCC. He became manager for the football team.

Bob worked in sales for many years for various companies. In 1974, he and his brother Jim purchased the Bronson Locker and owned it for 10 years. He worked for O’Reilly Auto Parts for a couple of years until taking a job with the Post Office. He worked for the Post Office for 12 years until retirement.

Bob was a former President of the FSCC Booster Club, former member of the Amateur Baseball Association, Baseball Umpires Association, Mirza Shrine, Bronson Ruritan, V.F.W., and was a 32-degree Mason

He was a member of the Bronson United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Pam of the home; a son, Brett Roufs and wife Michelle, Newton, KS; a daughter, Melanie Elliott and husband Justin, Paola, KS; a brother, James H. Belknap, Jr., Fort Scott; 7 grandchildren, Morgan, Olivia, Lance, Noah, Manny, Maiya, and Dawson; 1 great grandchild Ryan; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Weaver; a grandson, Jacob R. Welch; a sister Thelma Sue Dement; and his parents.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, December 2nd, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until service time at the funeral home.

Obituary of Alvena Carol Russell

Alvena Carol Russell, age 82, a resident of rural Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2022, at her home.  She was born October 10, 1940, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of John J. Bloom, Jr. and Freda Hamlett Bloom.

Carol graduated from the Ft. Scott High School and went on to attend Arlington Bible College in Arlington, Texas.

She married Robert L. Russell on April 22, 1962, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle in Ft. Scott.  Together they raised their three daughters, Laurie, Barbie and Shelly.  While the girls were younger, Carol served as a Campfire leader.

Throughout her life, Carol worked in clerical and secretarial positions at various businesses including Wal-Mart, Ennis Business Forms, Great West Insurance Company and the First Baptist Church; however, her main priority was taking care of her family.

After her girls had grown, she owned and operated her own business, Brides and Things, located in downtown Ft. Scott.

Carol was a woman of faith and a longtime member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle where she served as a Sunday school teacher.  Carol was an accomplished writer and used her writing abilities to share her faith.  She published several children’s books as well as inspirational articles.

She was often asked to speak at area church functions, primarily ladies’ events.

Carol will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

 

Carol will be dearly missed by her husband, Bob, of the home; her three daughters, Laurie Center (Bill) of Lolo, Montana, Barbie Johnson of Ft. Scott and Sharon Michelle “Shelly” Allen (Brett) of Fountain, Colorado; her seven grandchildren, Grant Center, Lindsey LaRocque (Brandon), Katie, Kellie and Keriann Johnson and Kylie and Zaine Allen; and her five great-grandchildren, Kelsie, Alexa, Carter, Hadley and Lydia.  Also surviving is a niece, Leita Kester.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Sharon Kester.

 

There was cremation.  A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 17th at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

Private burial will take place at the Centerville Cemetery.

Obituary of Frontressa Foxx

Fontressa Monique Foxx, age 39, a resident of Fort Scott, KS, died early Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at her home.  She was born September 22, 1983, in Fort Scott.  Fontressa graduated from Fort Scott High School with the class of 2002.  She worked as a CNA at Guest Home Estates.  She enjoyed needlepoint, listening to music, and spending time with her beloved dog “Tiny.”

 

Survivors include her mother, Anita Foxx, of the home, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Lakin Sidell Foxx, her father, and her grandparents.

Obituary of Dr. Richard Spencer

Dr. Richard L. “Dick” Spencer, DDS, age 77, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at the Medicalodge in Ft. Scott.

He was born August 3, 1945, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Virgil W. Spencer and Dorothy Lee Spencer.  He graduated from the Ft. Scott High School and from Pittsburg State University.  He then went on to complete dental school at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

He married Karlene K. Murn on October 12, 1971.

Dr. Spencer owned and operated his own dental practice in Ft. Scott for several years.  He later worked in the dental office of Dr. Max Patterson.  Dick will be remembered as a devoted husband and a loving father as he faithfully cared for his wife, Karlene and their son, Jonathan.

 

He was the last of his family.  Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Karlene on July 2, 2019, and his son, Jonathan, on November 7, 2000.  He was also preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Dorothy Spencer and his in-laws, Bill, and Becky Murn.

Obituary of Joyce Anthony

Joyce Lea Anthony, age 85, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away early Monday, November 21, 2022, at the Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

She was born November 28, 1936, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Thomas E. Phillips and Lucy A. King.  From an early age, Joyce was raised by her mother and step-father, Sherman Love.  Joyce graduated from the Ft. Scott High School with the Class of 1954.  She married Bill Anthony on May 24, 1963, at Ft. Scott.

When her daughter, Leota, was growing up, Joyce supported her musical endeavors.  She was also active with the Girl Scouts and helped with the PTA. Music was always an important part of Joyce’s life.  For many years she managed the Ernie Williamson’s Music Store located on North Main Street in Ft. Scott.  She also enjoyed listening to Leota’s music students work on their lessons.

Joyce loved to make blankets and quilts.  Many a child has been the recipient of one of Joyce’s baby blankets or hair bows.

She was a member of the Community of Christ Church.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Leota Lucy Anthony, of Ft. Scott and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, on January 11, 2004.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Billy Jay Anthony; her parents; a sister, Clara May Hawkins and two brothers, Robert Love and Johnny Love, Sr.

 

Robert and Cathy Clark will conduct funeral services at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 26th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

Obituary of Kevin Darling

Kevin Lee Darling, age 64, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Friday, November 18, 2022, at his home.  He was born November 20, 1957, in Ft. Scott, the son of Wallace Linden and Winona Cecile Frigo Darling.  He graduated from FSHS with the class of 1976.  Kevin worked for BNSF Railroad for 33 years until his retirement.  Through the years he also worked with his father at Darling, Inc.  Kevin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing.  He was a big fan of KU basketball, Chiefs football, and Royals baseball.  He loved spending time with his family.  He was a friend of many.  Keving was a member of Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus, and Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

 

Survivors include his siblings, Rhonda Ross (David), Topeka, KS; Janice Darling, Blue Springs, MO; Wallace “Lindy” Darling, Belton, MO; and Susan Darling (Dewayne), Ft. Scott, KS; a stepson, Jeff Dean, Fayetteville, AR; nieces and nephews Allison Confer, Laura Hodson, Mitch Ross, Zack Cannon, Hunter Darling, Hannah Darling, Philip Moran, Michele Moran, and Jarrod Flanagan; an uncle, Rodell Darling, Ft. Scott; and numerous cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 30th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Elks Lodge and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Obituary of Daniel Bruner

Daniel William Bruner, age 65, a resident of Bronson, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly, Friday November 11, 2022, at his home in Bronson.  He was born September 29, 1957, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Irwin William Bruner and Lucille Evelyn Gillispie Bruner.

Dan graduated from the Marmaton Valley High School with the Class of 1975.

He married Trisha Farr on April 20, 2009.

He had been employed by Copy Products in Iola, Kansas for nearly forty years.  He had made many friends and acquaintances while traveling the area as a copy technician.

When not working, Dan could often be found on the golf course. He also enjoyed coaching and working youth athletic events.

 

Survivors include his wife, Trisha, of the home in Bronson; two sons, Brett Bruner of St. Joseph, Missouri and Chad Bruner of Lawrence, Kansas; two step-children, Katie Avery (Jordan) of Kansas City, Missouri and Michael Rogers (Jessica) of Springfield, Missouri.  Also surviving is a brother, David Bruner (Penny) of Ottawa, Kansas.

 

Following cremation, a celebration of life will be held at Monday, November 21, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the Freeman Presbyterian Church Life Center at 402 N. Harrison St. in Freeman, Missouri

Obituary of Ellen Kruse

Ellen Marie Kruse, of Fort Scott, passed away Saturday evening, November 12, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi in Pittsburg. She was born on December 20, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the daughter of James Hewitt Miller and Willa Mae (Moore) Miller.

She married Fred Blair Kruse on June 4, 1971, in Mt. Vernon, Iowa and he preceded her in death on February 22, 2009.

 

Ellen is survived by her daughters, Tammy Baughn (James), of Moundville, Missouri, Tina Kerr, of Fort Scott, and Teresa Saunders (William), also of Fort Scott; three sisters, Linda Hartman, of Branson, Missouri, Alice Screws, of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Victoria Webber of Donna, Texas; ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents.

 

Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at Fort Scott National Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Obituary of Mary Lou Schafer

Mary Lou (Peterson) Schafer, 87, passed away at her daughter’s home in Apache Junction, Arizona, on October 29, 2022. She had relocated to Arizona in July after having suffered a massive stroke at her home in Fort Scott in February 2022.

Mary Lou was born on November 28, 1934, to parents Willis H. and Verna (Likely) Peterson at their home in Hiattville, the third of nine Peterson siblings. She attended Hepler schools and graduated from Hepler High School in 1952. In 1953, she married Ralph Shoemaker and they moved to Colorado in 1955, where they resided until their divorce in 1965. She then moved to Fort Scott where she met and married John (“Joe”) Schafer in 1973.

Mary Lou worked at Cullor Limestone until she married Joe. After their marriage, she and Joe formed their own business, Schafer Monuments. She attended Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church and was an active member of the St. Anne’s Altar Society. She also served on the Fort Scott Housing Authority Board in recent years. Some of her favorite activities were bowling, gardening, fishing, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her three children, Mickey Shoemaker (David) Webb of Apache Junction, Arizona, Brenda Shoemaker (Ron) Fritts of Paola, Kansas, and Martin Shoemaker of Paola, Kansas. She is also survived by four stepchildren, Ronnie (Phyllis) Schafer of Derby, Kansas, Kevin (Debbie) Schafer of Fort Scott, Janet (Joe) Watts of Clearwater, Kansas, and Joyce (Brian) Thorpe of Aurora, Missouri. She is survived by grandchildren Nick Shoemaker and Josh Shoemaker and several step-grandchildren. A great-grandchild, Dakota Fritts.  She is survived by siblings Frank Peterson, Margie Madison, Von (Susan) Peterson, Verna Mae (“Sissy”) (Jay) Mall, and sister-in-law Edith Peterson. She had many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her great-nieces Kendall and Lauren Madison were a big part of her life through her involvement in their 4-H and other activities.

Preceding her in death were her husband Joe Schafer, parents Willis and Verna Peterson, infant sister Louise Peterson, brothers Sonny (“Harry”) Peterson, Bill Peterson, and Pat Peterson, brother-in-law William (“Bill”) Madison, and sisters-in-law Joyce Peterson and Sue Peterson. Two grandsons, Douglas Felt (son of Mickey Webb) and Kyle Fritts (son of Brenda Fritts), and niece and nephew Angela Madison Handke and Thomas Madison (children of Margie Madison).

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, at the Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, where services are currently being held in the Kennedy Gym. Obituary of Brian McDaniel

 

 

 

 

Brian Scott McDaniel, age 49, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly Monday, November 7, 2022, at the Via Christi Emergency Room in Ft. Scott.  He was born December 14, 1972, in Ft Scott, the son of Darrell McDaniel and Linda Kay Dunlap McDaniel.  Brian received an Associates Degree from Ft. Scott Community College.  He was currently employed by Winvent.  Brian will be remembered for his mechanical ability; he was always willing to help friends and family with car repairs.  Brian enjoyed the outdoors.  He enjoyed kayaking, but he really enjoyed riding his motorcycle.  He often participated in patriotic rides with the American Legion.  Brian also enjoyed shooting pool and was an avid fan of the San Francisco ‘49ers.

 

Survivors include his children, Kris Nickelson (Meganeira) of Lawrence, Kansas, Donna Luther (Justin) of Nevada, Missouri, Bre Bockes (Marc) of Kansas City, Missouri, Lenora McDaniel (Lazerick) of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Monica Rice, of Joplin, Missouri, Karah Beerbower of Ft. Scott, Angela McDaniel also of Ft. Scott and Brian Stumfoll of Nevada, Missouri and twenty grandchildren with another granddaughter on the way.  Also surviving are his father, Darrell McDaniel of Bentonville, Arkansas and a sister, Melissa McDaniel (Michael) of Bella Vista, Arkansas.  He was preceded in death by his mother and two sisters, Tammy Baglin and Angela Delaney.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 12th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Centerville Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M.
