Obituary of Connie Golden

Connie Golden, age 62, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2019, at her home.  She was born September 9, 1952, in Cuba, Missouri.   She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed playing the guitar and drawing.

Survivors include two sons, James Golden Jr. and wife, Virginia and Daniel Golden and wife, Joyce, all of Ft. Scott; and thirteen grandchildren.  Also surviving are several brothers and sisters in Missouri.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren Kelsey and Christian Golden.

Following cremation, Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct a memorial service at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, February 13th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.  Private burial will take place at a later date in the Large Cemetery south of Ft. Obituary of Shirley Mae Allen

Shirley Mae Allen, age 72, a resident of Pleasanton, Kansas, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2019, at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri.  She was born January 8, 1947, in Humboldt, Kansas, the daughter of Claude Pollett and Dorothy Heimburg Pollett.  Shirley first married Clark Alan Howard.  He preceded her in death.  She later married J. L. Allen on August 12, 1978, at Iola, Kansas.  In earlier years, Shirley had worked in the business office of Mercy Hospital in Ft. Scott and later for Dr. Carney’s office in Iola.  She then was employed as a para-professional for the Pleasanton High School.  She had attended the Pleasanton Church of the Nazarene.  Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  Taking care of her family was her number one priority.  She and J.L. enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include her husband, J. L. of the home; five children, Dr. Jay Allen (Tana), of Pleasanton, Kansas, Brian Howard (Sherry), of Nevada, Missouri, Kevin Howard (Kristy), Iola, Kansas, Kara Nicole Allen (Steven), of Kansas City, Missouri and Megan Brixey (Chris), of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Melissa Allen of Jasper, Indiana, five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.  Also surviving are two brothers, Clarence Pollett, of LaHarpe, Kansas and John Pollett, of Iola, Kansas and two sisters, Barbara Beasley, of LaHarpe, Kansas and Nancy Pollet, of Independence, Kansas.  She was preceded in death by a son, Chris Allen.

William James Schafer will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 9th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Obituary of Jerrold Clifford Patterson

Jerrold Clifford (Cliff) Patterson, age 79, of Fort Scott, KS, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS. He was born on September 21, 1939, in Kirksville, MO, the son of Reece Jerrold and Ruth Margaret (Reynolds) Patterson. Cliff married Nancy Jo Smith on December 13, 1958, in her parentshome in Lawrence, KS. He worked for Hallmark Cards, Ennis Business Forms and Ward-Kraft as well as being an owner/ operator of the Otasco store in Ava, MO. Cliff enjoyed flying, sailing, fishing, woodworking and riding his motorcycle. He was active in the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and the ROMEO Riders motorcycle club until pulmonary fibrosis ended these involvements. At the time of his passing, Cliff attended Diamond Community Church in rural Fort Scott.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Nancy of the home; four daughters, Sharon McGaughey of Pollock Pines, CA; Brenda DeKeno (Don) of Pea Ridge, AR; Deborah Allen (Tim) of Fort Scott, KS; and Laura Soliday of Kansas City, MO. He was the proud grandpa of twelve grandchildren; and the beloved GGpato ten great-grandchildren. Cliff is also survived by a sister, Darlene Radke of Ferndale, WA; and a sister-in-law, Rozann Patterson of Prosser, WA. He was also the much loved uncle of four nephews and one niece. Cliff was proceeded in death by his daughter, Sandy Patterson of Bella Vista, AR; his parents; his brother, Claude Patterson of Kissimmee, FL; his brothers-in-law Robert E. Smith of Kansas City, MO and Elmer Radke of Ferndale, WA.; his nephew, Doug Radke of Bellingham, WA.

Pastor Trevor Jacobs will conduct funeral services at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 10th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will take place at 1:00 PM Monday, February 11th, in the Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 12:45 PM on Monday. Obituary of Robert Jack Eshelbrenner

Robert Jack Eshelbrenner, age 71, died on January 9, 2019.

Bob was born November 1, 1947 in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Jack and Sara Handly Eshelbrenner.  He was a 1965 graduate of Fort Scott High School.  Bob graduated from Pittsburg State University with a degree in business.

He worked in the insurance industry specializing in information technology, retiring as CIO from Hastings Mutual in Michigan.

Bob also served in the United States Army in both active and reserve duty for 27 years.  He retired with the rank of Colonel after serving in Operation Desert Storm.

He is survived by his wife Nancy (Wogan) Eshelbrenner of Fishers, IN; two daughters, Erin Green of Fishers; Kate Sowder and husband Jason of St. Louis, MO; and three grandchildren, Ellie and Jackson Green of Fishers, IN. and Nate Sowder of St. Louis, MO.  Also surviving are three sisters, Sally Steckler and husband, Mike, of Prairie Village, Kansas, Lyn Hixon and husband, Mitch, of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Jara Martin and husband David, Fort Scott.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Following cremation, Rev. Dusty Drake will conduct a memorial service at 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 8, 2019 at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial with military honors will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. The Family will receive friends from 5:00 -7:00 P.M. Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Elmer Jack Adamson

Elmer Jack Adamson, age 76, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Friday, February 1, 2019, at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, KS.

Jack was born December 19, 1942, in Ft. Scott, the son of Paul King Adamson, Sr. and Edna Ellen Deeds Adamson. He graduated from Uniontown High School with the class of 1960.

He married Mary Alice Henderson on January 11, 1964, in Miami, OK. Jack worked for Frisco and then Burlington Northern Railroad for over 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming. He loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Mary of the home; a son, Doug Adamson and wife Carol, Ft. Scott; a daughter, Melissa Davis and husband Ron, Butler, MO; two sisters, Marilyn Harrington, Paola, KS, and Beatrice Alt, Ft. Scott; three grandchildren, Joshua Adamson and wife Stacey, Ashley Adamson, and Ethan Clark and wife Amanda; 1 great-grandson, Kasen Clark; three step-grandchildren, Terri Manley, Cody Davis, and Ronna Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul “Dobber”, Richard “Sonny”, and Frank Adamson; a sister Patricia White; and his parents.

Obituary of Ruth Mudd

Ruth R. Mudd, 98, formerly of Uniontown, passed away Monday morning, January 28, 2019, at the Kingswood Health Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was born November 20, 1920, in Uniontown, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Effie Bertha (Summers) Hart. She married (James) Kelly Mudd June 18, 1943, in Riverside, California. He preceded her in death February 22, 2002.

Ruth worked for the Social Security Administration for seventeen years prior to her retirement in March 1982. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society, as well as the Social Security Administration Alumni. She was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, NARFE Chapter 20, and a former member of American Federation of Government Employees 1336.

Ruth is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Pat Pearson, of Emporia, Kansas, Pam Pollock, of Leawood, Kansas, Pat Price, and Jean Wiley, both of Fort Scott.

In addition to her husband Kelly, Ruth, as the last of nine children, was also preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters and her parents.

Father Yancey Burgess will celebrate the Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2019, at the Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Rosary at 10:30 a.m. prior to services.

Burial will follow at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Walnut, Kansas. Obituary of Carl Frederich Lyman

Carl Frederich Lyman, age 72, a resident of rural Garland, Kansas, passed away early Monday, January 28, 2019, at his home.

  He was born November 10, 1946, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the son of Clifford Lyman and Hattie Jasmund Lyman.  Carl graduated from the Ft. Scott High School and the Ft. Scott Community College.  While in high school, Carl was a member of the 1963 championship football team.

Carl married Deborah Beth Mosher on April 23, 2004.  Carl had worked as a meat cutter in Pittsburg and then worked for twenty-five years at Ward-Kraft in Ft. Scott.  Following his retirement, Carl continued to work part-time for Wal-Mart. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He loved spending time with his grandchildren.  He also liked to cook.  He had served as a Past Master for the Rising Sun Lodge #8 A.F. & A.M. in Ft. Scott.  He was a member of the Community of Christ Church.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah, of the home; a son, Matt Lyman and a daughter, Jana Walker and her husband, Shane; three step-children, Tracie Nation, Courtney West and Brian West; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

At Carl’s request, his body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center.

  A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 4th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

  Masonic rites will also be conducted.

Obituary of April Michelle “Shelly” Brodnax Piatt

April Michelle “Shelly” Brodnax Piatt, age 48, a resident of Girard, Kansas, passed away Monday, January 28, 2019, at the Freeman West Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri.

She was born April 18, 1970, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the daughter of James Erwin Brodnax and Doris Jean Stanley Brodnax.  She graduated from the Ft. Scott High School and later from Labette County Community College.

  She had worked as a CNA doing home health care and also assisting the school nurse for the Girard school district.  Shelly cared deeply for her family and was a devoted mother to her two sons.  She was always willing to help others any way she could.

Survivors include her two sons, Chase Piatt and wife, Courtney, of Arma, Kansas and Dalton Piatt, of Reno, Nevada.  Also surviving are her parents, James Brodnax, of Girard, Kansas and Jeanne Stanley of Reno, Nevada; and two sisters, Tanya Morter and husband, Matt, of Ft. Scott, Kansas and Christina Larking and husband, Matthew, of Milford, Massachusetts.

Pastor Dale Samuels will conduct graveside services at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, January 31st at the West Liberty Cemetery east of Hammond, Kansas.

Obituary of Lelah Marie Burgess

Lelah Marie Burgess, age 83, a former resident of Neosho, Missouri and Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at the Pittsburg Health & Rehab Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.

She graduated from the Girard High School. While in high school where she was involved with the band and Glee Club. Lelah first married Donald Beck. They were divorced.

She later married Melvin Burgess. In earlier years, she did clerical work in the insurance industry. She later worked as a CNA and as a CMA for area nursing homes. She enjoyed going to estate sales and antique shopping as well as spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Bruce Beck and wife, Chizuru of Hanford, California and her daughter, Dawn Marie Morries and fiancée, Richard Wiltberg, of Carl Junction, Missouri; five grandchildren, Vincent, Jay, Sarah, Krystal and Heather and thirteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Anna Louise Martinson from the State of Nevada.

Her first husband, Donald Beck, passed away in 1995. Her second husband, Melvin Burgess, passed away in 2008. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Earline Foy and a brother, Melvin Endicott.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct funeral services at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 29th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Private burial will follow in the Hiattville Cemetery.

Obituary of Edith Collins

Edith Marie Collins, 94, of Fort Scott, passed away at her home at Presbyterian Village Wednesday morning, January 23, 2019.

She was born November 28, 1924, in Metz, Missouri the daughter of Charles Floyd and Grace Mertie (Saul) Charles.

She married Lewis F. Collins April 21, 1946, in Fort Scott, Kansas.

Edith graduated from Metz High School in 1942 and was involved in basketball and orchestra. She went on to receive her nurses training in Fort Scott, graduating in 1945. She served her community in the Cadet Nurse Corps during WWII. Edith worked as a nurse in the Fort Scott area for many years, mostly in the OB Department at Mercy Hospital, for thirty years. She was a member of Bethel Community Church, and a TOPS Charter Member & Weight Recorder for over fifty years.

After her retirement Edith cared for her husband until his death in 1984. She traveled to all fifty states as well as Europe and Asia. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting, and she volunteered at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop.

Edith is survived by her children; two sons, Tom Collins and Anita of Eagle Rock, Missouri; Bob Collins and Cherie of Fort Scott; a daughter, Kathy Hixon and Steven of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren, Nathan Collins of Fort Scott, Melinda Morgan of Wichita, Kansas, Melissa Wise of Fort Scott, Meredith Anstine of Garden City, Missouri, Julie Rankin of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Stephanie Klemm of College Station, Texas, Matt Hixon of Seattle, Washington, Jimmy Bolinger of Uniontown, and Jason Bolinger of Fort Scott; a brother, Ellis Charles of Emporia, Kansas; ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Lewis, Edith was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Floyd Charles, a sister, Lois Charles, and a daughter-in-law, Carolane Collins.

Pastor Ben Heffernan will conduct funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with burial following at the Centerville Cemetery.

Obituary for Thomas Sullivan

Thomas  Sullivan

Thomas Sullivan born on June 8, 1929 in Glasgow, Scotland went to rest on January 11, 2019, to be with his loving wife, Anna.

Thomas served in the British Army.

He loved to play soccer and continued to play when he came to America.

He leaves behind his daughters, Annie and Maureen, his son-in-law Albert Martinez,  and his grandsons Thomas and William and his wife, April, and Anthony Martinez. His great-grandchildren William and Mikayla.

Thomas will be laid to rest with Anna in Greenock, Scotland.
