Extension Master Gardener Training Offered This Fall

Area plant lovers have an excellent opportunity this fall to participate in an outstanding horticulture program. Extension Master Gardener training will be held September 3 through December 3 using a hybrid format that combines in-person classes with Zoom instruction.

The Extension Master Gardener program is a volunteer program in which K-State Extension “trades” classroom training for volunteer service. Participants receive 40 to 50 hours of instruction in all aspects of horticulture and, upon completion of the training, donate an equivalent number of volunteer service hours to Extension horticulture programs.

Training is taught by Kansas State University specialists, local Extension agents, and area horticulture experts. Topics include:

  • Plant Growth and Development
  • Soils, Water, and Fertilizer
  • Vegetable Gardening
  • Insect Diagnosis and Management
  • Growing Fruit
  • Annuals and Perennials
  • Woody Ornamentals
  • Turfgrass
  • Landscape Maintenance
  • Plant Disease Diagnosis and Management
  • Pesticide Use and Safety
  • Wildlife Management

Although the Master Gardener program is volunteer-based, applicants must meet the following requirements before being accepted into the program:

  • Be available to complete approximately 40 hours of community horticulture volunteer service during the first year. Volunteer hours are equal to the number of training hours received.
  • Have access to the internet, a computer or other device with a microphone and camera, an actively monitored email account, and reliable transportation to the in-person training location in Iola.
  • Enjoy sharing a love of gardening with others through a variety of Extension Master Gardener projects.

The Southwind Extension District has an active Master Gardener program whose volunteers have completed projects including demonstration flower beds, vegetable research trials, educational programs, and many other community horticulture initiatives.

Applications are now available and must be submitted to the Southwind Extension District by August 15. The registration fee is $95.

Applications are available on the Southwind Extension District website: www.southwind.k-state.edu or can be mailed upon request. For more information about the Master Gardener training program, please contact the Extension office.

Krista Harding is the K-State Research and Extension horticulture agent serving the Southwind Extension District. She can be reached at [email protected] or 620-244-3826.

K-State Research and Extension is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

Kobach Appeals Mail-In Ballot Grace Period Ruling

TOPEKA – (July 16, 2026) – Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach today announced his office will file an emergency appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court, after a district court judge issued a temporary injunction reinstituting a three-day grace period for the return of mail-in ballots. More than 44,000 ballots have already gone out.

“This judge has issued an unprecedented, poorly-reasoned decision that completely upsets the election process after absentee voting has already begun,” Kobach said. “His decision will cause massive confusion for voters. The judge delayed nearly five months in issuing his opinion. He should have issued it in April at the latest. My office is filing an emergency appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court to ensure that in Kansas, Election Day is Election Day.”

In May 2025, Kansas Appleseed filed a lawsuit challenging a Kansas law that eliminated the three-day grace period for mail-in ballots arriving after Election Day. Attorneys argued the case before Judge Folsom in February with post-trial briefing due March 2.

Ad: Josh Jones — Run It Like a Business

I’m Josh Jones, and I’ll treat your tax dollars like they matter.

Joshua Jones, Republican for Bourbon County Commissioner, District 3 — Value for Every Dollar

I’m Josh Jones, a lifelong resident and small-business owner, and I’m running for Bourbon County Commissioner, District 3.

I believe the county should be run like a business — and the first thing any good business owner knows is who the boss is. In county government, that’s you. The citizens are the real owners, and every dollar spent is yours.

Running it like a business doesn’t mean everything has to turn a profit. A park may not, and that’s fine. It means nothing gets wasted, and every decision comes down to value versus cost. It also means taking care of the people who do the work — employees are the backbone of any organization, and you don’t build anything good by forgetting that.

When you’re told it’s “cut services or raise taxes,” that isn’t always the whole truth. On the Fort Scott City Commission, we showed there’s a third way:

  • Cut about half a million dollars from the budget in my first six months
  • Raised our lowest-paid workers from $8 an hour to $12
  • Lowered the mill levy three years running while holding the budget at or near revenue neutral

I’ll bring that same taxpayer-first discipline to the county:

  • Stay truly revenue neutral — don’t automatically keep every extra dollar that rising property valuations bring in
  • Push for a clear cap (say, 3% or inflation) so any increase past it goes to a vote of the people, not just a hearing that changes nothing

Your tax dollars, your county, your call.

Vote Josh Jones — Bourbon County Commissioner, District 3. Value for every dollar.

Paid for by Joshua Jones for County Commissioner, Josh Jones, Treasurer.

When You Get the Short Straw by Patty LaRoche

Patty LaRoche

When You Get the Short Straw

By Patty LaRoche

Have you ever been around a “Negative Nilly” kind of relative? Nothing is ever okay, not the weather, the restaurant food, the comfort of their vehicle, their bed, and certainly not you. They are constantly tired, overwhelmed, hot, cold, stretched to the limit, disappointed or living in their past regrets. Sitting next to them at family get togethers means you got the short straw, and whatever positive you share will be met with a downer tale of woe.

You’ve just been promoted? Must be nice; these people have lost their last five jobs because someone was jealous of them. You’ve joined a wonderful Bible study and met some great friends? Swell; these relatives have tried every church in town and can’t find any that aren’t filled with hypocrites. You recommend a restaurant; they got food poisoning the last time they ate there. The problem with these people is they have “a problem for every solution,” constantly finding ways to criticize or complain. They sprinkle passive-aggressive comments like confetti. This can drain your energy, cause frustration, anxiety, or even depression, as well as hinder your spiritual progress.

“Do not be misled,” starts 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Bad company corrupts good character.'” And yes, bad company can include relatives. We must surround ourselves with positive, uplifting people who encourage our walk with God.

We once had family members who came to stay with us for a week. Never once did they offer to help make dinner or clean up afterwards. They spoke only of themselves and never asked any questions about how our lives were going. Dave and I had two young children who needed our attention. It was as if we had added two more. On the fifth day, Dave told them that they were in charge of the meal that evening. He was my hero.

Christians have difficulty setting boundaries with people like that because we feel we are letting God down and not discipling well when we protect our emotional health by acting in our own self-interest. The problem with that is our “loved ones” have gotten away with this behavior by manipulating the entire family with their negativity, and no one wants to be the one to create distance from these toxic relationships. No one benefits.

An anonymous source said this about negative ninnies: “Keep them in your heart but out of your life.” I’m pretty sure Jesus would agree.

Obituary: Norma Jean Nilges, Age 97

Norma Jean Nilges, known lovingly as Jean, was born November 9, 1928, in Sedgwick County, Kansas, and passed away July 12, 2026, in Garnett, Kansas, at the age of 97 from natural causes. She was united in marriage to Bernard J. Nilges on July 16, 1948. He preceded her in death June 17, 2021. She carried the memory of their life together with grace and steadfast love. Jean was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose life reflected the values she held dear.

Jean is survived by her daughters, Cristine M. Bacon and her husband, Charles of Moran, Kansas and Connie J. Hiner and her husband, Sam of Burlington, Kansas. She also leaves behind a loving family of grandchildren, Bryan Bacon and his wife, Brenda of McKinney, Texas, Jessica Bacon of Moran, Kansas, Tina Withers and her husband, Chris, Erica Combs and her husband, Donnie and Renee Fischer and her husband, Chancy all of Burlington, Kansas. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Abigail, Caleb, Austin, Hannah, Collin, Jocelyn, Cassidy, Evan, Ava and Addison, as well as a great-great-grandson, Oliver. Each of them carries forward a part of her love, her strength, and her example. Also surviving are three brothers, Reuben, David and Steven Blubaugh. In addition to her husband, Jean was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert, Ralph, Roger, Russell and Raymond Blubaugh and a sister, Lois Nilges.

As a Christian, Jean trusted in the promises of God and lived with hope in the Lord’s mercy and eternal care. Her earthly journey has now ended, but her faith assures those who mourn that death is not the final word for those who belong to Christ. May she rest in the peace of her Savior, and may her family find strength in the hope of eternal life and the assurance that love never truly ends. Her family would like to thank the staff at the Anderson County Residential Living Center for all their friendship and care for Jean over the last several years.
