City of Fort Scott Receives SPARK Funds

The City of Fort Scott has received SPARK grants to help with COVID-19 expenses.
The Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK)  Taskforce is charged with leading Kansas forward in recovery from the far-reaching effects of COVID-19, with funds distributed from the U.S. Federal Government, according to its website https://covid.ks.gov/spark-recovery-office/.

Previously,  $9,975 was received for personal protection equipment (PPE)  and cleaning expenses the city incurred since the pandemic began in March 2020, Susan Bancroft, the city’s finance director said.

In addition, the city received $142,000 on October 9, 2020 to cover the following categories,  according to Bancroft.

 

PPE-$31,500 and Public Health Expenses-$15,000.

 

“Public Safety will receive funding to protect essential workers during the pandemic, as well as address disinfecting several community facilities,” Bancroft said.  “The City of Fort Scott will be purchasing MSA self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for our firefighters, rechargeable Gen Eon Misters to disinfect public areas, air purifiers for several locations, PPE and additional janitorial services.”

 

Economic Support $6,500:

 

“The Coronavirus Pandemic has created a completely different landscape for tourism,” Bancroft said. ” No longer are people interested in going to big cities with crowded venues.  Instead, they are looking to visit towns like Fort Scott where they can get away from those crowded areas.  Specifically, they are interested in getting outdoors.  Fort Scott and Bourbon County are uniquely positioned for this type of activity.  We have a plethora of agritourism businesses that people have greatly enjoyed visiting over the years, such as the Lavender Patch, Black Dogs Farm, Gunn Park Trails, T&C Wildlife, Anderson Elk Ranch and more.  The funds received for economic support will be used for direct mailings, professional photos, drone video, agritourism postcards and brochures and pay per click advertising.”

 

 

Technology costs $89,000:

 

“Travel has become very limited due to COVID-19,” Bancroft said.  “Furthermore, public safety workers need to continue educational training for certification.  These technology funds will enable a training area to be created for this purpose.  Computers for telework, a projector, tables and chairs and a whiteboard will be purchased to create this learning environment.  In addition, in order to reduce the contact when officers are out patrolling, mobile dispatch units, additional computers for telework, and an Ecitation program with printers for records management will be purchased.”

Progress on Uniontown Health Clinic

Gene George and Hugh Wunderly retrieve lumber for the concrete ADA sidewalk they are building for the Uniontown Health Clinic.

Work is underway for the Uniontown Health Clinic located on the campus of USD 235.

The clinic is a collaboration of the school district, Uniontown Ruritan, Girard Medical Center and Bourbon County.

They recently received a SPARK Grant from the government and a Jayhawk Wind (wind energy company) grant to move forward with repurposing the building south of the high school football/track field into a health clinic for the community.

This is a photo I took at Costco a few days ago, and yes, it is a roasted chicken sitting on top of a case of beans. Obviously, this is not where the chicken belongs. It appears that someone changed his/her mind while shopping, and instead of returning the warm meat to its proper place, discarded it…well, wherever it was convenient.

L-A-Z-Y!

I imagine this poor chick had to be thrown away. And Costco will pass on the cost to us.

This behavior troubles me. It’s not the only one. Actually, many behaviors trouble me. The following is my short-list of irksome things people do:

  • refuse to use designated, parking lot cart stalls
  • tip cheaply
  • announce ahead of time that they are paying the restaurant bill as a thanks for you hosting them for two weeks while covering every expense. (Had I wanted a steak, I for sure won’t order one now. “I would like a hamburger patty, water, and no dessert, please.”)
  • answer their cell phone in church or a movie theater
  • lie about their age to get a senior citizen discount
  • don’t give the line call in pickleball
  • show up in an express lane with items exceeding the maximum amount allowed
  • fail to send some kind of a “thank you” (Unless they are mute and have no hands, there is NO excuse.)
  • ignore RSVPs or RSVP to attend but then fail to show
  • refuse to give up their seat to an elderly/disabled/pregnant individual
  • leave roasted chicken sitting atop a crate of beans

Like I said, my short list.

One of Merriam’s definitions of Integrity is “moral soundness.” It means “doing the right thing.” Every day we are given choices to do just that. We are to put other peoples’ interests ahead of ours. In 2 Corinthians 8:21, Paul reminds us of how that looks: For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.

I’m betting that this Costco culprit made sure no one saw him/her placing a chicken where it did not belong, disregarding the fact that God saw it. Still, I have to wonder how I would have reacted, had I caught the offender in the act (my chance not to act offensive but sensitive to their plight, you know).

I probably would have offered to take the chicken back where it belonged. In love, of course, because I am always thinking about the other person and not myself.

Always.

Yeah, let’s go with that.

Fort Scott’s Third Annual Veterans Day Celebration Next Week

Join us in honoring our American heroes at the Third Annual Veterans Day Celebration next week.

The celebration begins Tuesday night, November 10th from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm with a welcome reception at the Boiler Room Brewhaus at 2 S. National Ave., Fort Scott, KS. At the come and go reception, veterans and their spouses can enjoy a free hamburger meal that will be generously provided by the E3 Foundation.

Wednesday morning VFW Post 1165 will host the Veterans Day Ceremony at Bourbon County Fairgrounds Rodeo Arena at 2102 Huntington Blvd. beginning at 11:00am. In the event of inclement weather, the alternate location for the ceremony is Memorial Hall, 1 E. 3rd St. The ceremony will be followed by a free will donation lunch at VFW Post 1165 at 1745 S National Ave.

Visit Fort Scott and the Chamber of Commerce will offer free trolley rides to veterans and their spouses on Friday with tours at 10am, 11am, 1pm, & 2pm. Free trolley tours will depart from the Visitors Center at 231 E. Wall St., and will be on a first come, first served basis.

The Veterans Day Parade begins at 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon, following the normal parade route through downtown Fort Scott. Line-up will be along Main Street from 6th Street south to Fort Scott High School. Stewart Realty & The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce are the hosts of this year’s parade.

The Fort Scott National Historic Site is open daily with winter hours from 8:30am to 4:30 pm. Guided tours of the site are available at 10am & 1pm each day.

Obituary of Tranquilino “Paul” Baldonado

Tranquilino Paulino Baldonado

Tranquilino Paulino “Paul” Baldonado, passed away, Saturday October 31, 2020, in Crystal City Missouri after hospitalization and a short time in hospice.

He was born March 11, 1940 in Canjilon New Mexico to Paublin Baldonado and Rebecca (Maestas) Baldonado.

Paul graduated from Trenton High School in Trenton NE in 1957.

He also served in the Air Force for four years.

Paul was married to Marilyn Haarberg in 1963.

He had a long career with Firestone throughout the Midwest.

He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Scott Kansas.

He served as volunteer for a several years at Mercy Hospital Fort Scott.

Paul was a lifelong Nebraska Cornhuskers fan.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn Baldonado; a sister Maria Lilia Frakes; daughter Kyla Scarborough, two sons Paul Ryan Baldonado and Eric Baldonado, and wife Darcy, and granddaughters, Anna and Elena Baldonado.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joe Baldonado and Max Baldonado, and three sisters, Maria Cordie Lopez, Maria Felo Ferguson, and Maria Lizzy Delgado.

There was cremation.

A small private burial will take place at a later date in the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main St.

New Employment Help Center Opens in Old Kress Building, Grocery Store Will Open Soon

A1 Towing and Moving, Fort Scott, moves shelving into the new grocery store, which will be located in the Old Kress Building, 17 S. Main.

A resource center in the former Kress Building, 17 S. Main is open in downtown Fort Scott.

The center is called the BWERC which stands for Bourbon County Workforce and Entrepreneur Resource Center.

The first floor is currently being prepared to sell groceries, while the second floor is open for business as a multi-partner center to help with COVID-19 related issues.

 

Downtown Grocery Store

BAJA Investments LLC, Healthy Bourbon County Action Team and a  local farm and ranch food cooperative grocery store will be located on the first floor, according to info from Hoener.

BAJA Investments will manage the grocery store that will open sometime in the second half of December 2020, said Bill Michaud, developer for the business. The store is as yet not named, Michaud said on Nov. 3.

The first-floor space will have shelving, coolers and freezers for
local produce and meat.

This will increase access to healthy food,  and make more food available for local food assistance programs, Hoener said.

Through a multi-partner collaboration of Bourbon County government , Pittsburg State University Small Business Development Center www.pittstatesmallbusiness.com, Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce http://fortscott.com/, Fort Scott Community College http://www.fortscott.edu/ , Kansas Works http://sekworks.organd BAJA Investments LLC , the hope is to address the urgent COVID-19 related crisis needs in Bourbon County, according to information provided by Jody Hoener, economic director for the county.

The building will be used for distance learning and teleworking and also a place for childcare businesses to become legal and thus help in childcare relief during the pandemic, Hoener noted.

The plan is to give businesses the tools and technical assistance needed for increased  online capabilities and the assistance to
obtain the money needed to sustain their business.

There is also unemployment and job-seeking assistance.

Governor Laura Kelly Announces Estimated $3.5 Million in Grants to Assist Kansas Child Care Programs

TOPEKA –Governor Laura Kelly today announced that Child Care Aware of Kansas, in partnership with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Office of Recovery, has launched a new Child Care Health Consultant Network to provide technical assistance to licensed child care providers as they implement COVID-19 health and safety guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

After working directly with a consultant to assess the environment, child care programs are eligible to apply for grant funding to purchase supplies or make adaptations to home or center-based facilities. Child Care Aware of Kansas anticipates providing $3.5 million in grants and supplies.

“Through the assistance and funding provided to Kansas child care providers by the Child Care Health Consultant Network, we will not only protect the health and safety of our child care workers and kids, but also ensure that centers can stay open throughout the duration of the pandemic,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “These grants will help ensure working parents have access to safe, healthy child care facilities and continue to strengthen our economy and keep businesses open. I want to thank Child Care Aware of Kansas, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the Office of Recovery for their innovative approach to fulfilling this need.”

The Child Care Health Consultant Network comes at a critical time for Kansas’ child care system. A recent study by Yale University showed that child care settings were not associated with increased risks of COVID-19 infections provided that appropriate health and safety measures were taken. Kansas’ Child Care Health Consultants work with child care providers to implement the most current guidance from the CDC and KDHE.

With the first phase of implementation for the Child Care Health Consultant Network nearing completion, Child Care Aware of Kansas and state partners are now shifting their attention to long-term sustainability of the Network. In addition to supporting healthy and safe child care settings, Child Care Health Consultants will play a crucial role in protecting and promoting the health growth and development of children and their families.

“The Child Care Health Consultant Network is a critical support for child care programs that are working hard to ensure that children are safe and healthy in the midst of the pandemic. We work with providers to assess the child care environment and ensure that health and safety measures are in place,” said Kelly Davydov, Executive Director. “Child care is essential to a thriving Kansas economy, and families want to know that their children are cared for in a safe, nurturing environment. We’re doing everything we can to ensure that this support continues to be available for child care programs.”

“The global pandemic placed a considerable amount of uncertainty into my day-to-day that I had not expected at the beginning of the year,” said Dawn Chapman, owner and operator of The Nature and Nurture Spot in Gardner, Kansas. “With the help of the Child Care Health Consultant Network, I’ve been able to purchase the supplies I need to help ensure the safety of the children I care for every day.”

To date, 415 child care programs have requested consultations.
