FRIENDS OF FSNHS ANNUAL MEETING AND PROGRAM OPEN TO ALL
The public is invited to attend the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Friends of Fort Scott National Historic Site (FSNHS) being held Monday, September 16 at the Herbert House, 512 S Judson in Fort Scott, KS. The meeting will feature a program “The Greatest Test of Courage: A Story of WWII and the Philippines”, presented by Ronda Hassig. It begins at 6 pm. Light appetizer refreshments will be served.
Join us to learn about the Friends work on behalf of FSNHS and a little known WWII story in one of Fort Scott premier historic homes.
The Friends of Fort Scott National Historic Site is a non-profit organization established in partnership with the National Park Service to support and promote the preservation and interpretation of FSNHS.

Michael Steven French, age 63, resident of Mulberry, KS died Tuesday, September 10, 2024,
at his home. There was cremation. Services for Michael French will be announced later by the
Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main.

Fort Scott National Cemetery
The Wreaths Across America fundraising theme for 2024 is “Live With Purpose”. With that in mind, we need your help again, says location Coordinator Diann Tucker. Each year we renew our goal to provide a wreath for each grave site at Fort Scott National Cemetery on national wreaths day; this year that day is December 14. There are nearly 7000 brave soldiers resting at Fort Scott National Cemetery who deserve to be remembered. Our mission, “Remember, Honor, and Teach”, is worth committing to.
Wreaths are $17.00 each. Please consider purchasing a wreath (or multiples) is Tucker’s request. Make it “your purpose” to sponsor wreaths at our local cemetery. We appreciate your donations and ask that you share this event with your friends and family. We need their help too. All sponsorship donations must be received by November 19 and are tax deductible.

Checks should be made payable to Wreaths Across America and sent to 746 215th St., Fort Scott, KS 66701. You can also contact us at [email protected]. If your donation is “grave specific” for a special person, we will need their name. In the event that we do not receive enough donations for all grave sites, we will provide wreaths first to the grave specific sites that received sponsorship.
Diann Tucker wants to invite you to the ceremony and wreath laying on December 14. She said they cannot do this without the many volunteers who share their time for this cause.
Friday Night Free Concert: Second Hand Strings
This Friday at 7 p.m. at the Heritage Park Pavilion Second Hand Strings will perform.
They are a local group that plays for us often,” said Ralph Carlson, facilitator of the free Friday Night Concerts, which is sponsored by the Fort Scott Chamber of Commerce. “They are one of my favorites. They perform country and popular songs. In addition, they perform some original music.”
The group includes Tammie Helm, Mike Buller, Rosemary Harris, Jean Strader and Paul Milks.

Catholic Church Rebuild Is Nearing Completion: Fundraiser On Sept. 13
The Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 714 S. Eddy, is nearing completion after the catastrophic fire that destroyed the old building two years ago.
Fire at Fort Scott’s Catholic Church Causes Extensive Damage
They are currently working on the intricate painting inside the dome of the church, Mark McCoy, of the Parish Building Committee, said.
Through these two years the congregation has been holding Mass in the Kennedy Gym, “beginning the first day after the fire on August 29, 2022,” said Calvin Joe Barr, a long-term church member.
A contractor was hired, the Simpson Construction Company of Wichita, to rebuild the building and it will look like the old historic building that was built in 1864.
The original artifacts that were saved are being restored, with financial help still needed for this project by the professional restorer.
And the church parish has been fundraising.
The Knights of Columbus are having another fundraiser this Friday, Sept. 13 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Gym, located behind the church at 704 S. Holbrook.
It will be a spaghetti and meatballs dinner with salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink. (Spaghetti with sauce only available)
The meal is a freewill offering, with to-go meals at $8 minimum.
Everyone is welcome, Barr said.
All the proceeds go to the church building fund.
On Saturday, November 24, 2024, the new church building will be dedicated by the Bishop Carl Kemme of Wichita.
“It’s sure to be packed with past priests, the Bishop, and church parishioners and their families,” said McCoy.
The parish priest rectory has been completed as well, and Father Yancey Burgess moved in at the end of June, Barr said.

KDA Extends Summer Youth Food Program
DCF Announces Application Deadline Extension for Summer EBT Program
Application deadline is now 5 p.m. on October 15
TOPEKA – The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) is extending the application deadline for the 2024 Summer EBT program, a new federal program designed to help eligible families offset some of the costs of buying food for their school-aged children during the summer.
Summer EBT, also known as SUN Bucks in other states, is a partnership between DCF, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service, and the Kansas Department of Education. The program provides families a one-time installment of $120 per each eligible school-aged child to buy groceries over the summer. Applications will be accepted through the DCF online self-service portal, dcfapp.kees.ks.gov, until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024. Families will need to use their existing account through the DCF self-service portal or create an account to apply.
Since July 2024, about 117,200 students have received the one-time $120 Summer EBT benefit through an auto-issuance, and DCF has received more than 2,000 applications. For families with children receiving food assistance, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and/or foster care benefits, the Summer EBT benefit was automatically added to existing households’ Kansas Benefits Cards (also known as an EBT card) or loaded onto a Kansas Benefits Card and mailed to the home. DCF estimates there could be more than 100,000 children who did not automatically receive the benefit but may be eligible.
Eligibility:
Children may be eligible for the program if:
- The child attended a Kansas school offering the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Program, and the household income met the requirements for free or reduced-price school meals at any point during the 2023-24 school year.
Or
- the school-aged child (7-17 years old) received food assistance, TANF, and/or foster care benefits at any point during the 2023-24 school year. (Summer EBT benefits were auto-issued to these households in July 2024.)
“While Summer EBT is intended to help offset the cost of food during summer break when kids don’t have access to the free or reduced-price meals they get at school, even with children already back in class the program can still provide families with a little extra help in putting food on their tables,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard. “We hope that by extending the application deadline, more families with eligible children will have the opportunity to apply for this year’s Summer EBT benefit.”
Application:
Families with children who did not receive the Summer EBT benefit by the end of July 2024 should apply through the online self-service portal, dcfapp.kees.ks.gov. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2024.
