Buck Run Open As of Today

Even though Buck Run Community Center is open again today with some limitations because of Covid 19 restrictions, there are other walking, running, playing, and fishing opportunities in Fort Scott.

Here is the framework of what has taken place the last few months at Buck Run Community Center, according to Tom Robertson, manager.

“May 18th – BRCC Fitness and Racquetball opened by appointment only, (Limited to 10 in each room)
May 22nd – Opened BRCC lobby to take FSRC Summer Programs registrations. (no appointments needed for fitness and/or racquetball but still limited to 10)
June 22nd – Completely opened BRCC and begin Youth Baseball/Softball Leagues
June 24th – Closed BRCC & cancelled FSRC programs and leagues for 1 week
July 1st – Reopened BRCC but limited to 45 and under in building with social distancing. Canceled FSRC summer camps and programs with the exception of youth and adult baseball/softball leagues that has been postponed until July 9th. Orders will be evaluated around July 6th or 7th.”

“The fitness room and two gymnasiums are open for usage,” said Tom Robertson,  manager.  “We are not allowing rentals until the restrictions are lifted to avoid going over the 45+(people allowed in the building) restrictions.

“We opened today with a restriction of 45 (people) and under including staff at any given time while practicing social distancing,” Robertson said.

“Youth baseball/softball is on hold right now with the 45 and under restriction. We will try to resume games if and when the restrictions are lifted.”

“The decision to postpone games was made by the Fort Scott Recreation Commission Board based on the orders by our Bourbon County Health Department,” he said.

The meeting was held on Monday of this week.

“Buck Run Community Center will practice social distancing at all times,” Robertson said.  “Once the governor presents guidelines on mask-wearing, signs and direction will be given to BRCC users as they enter the building.”

Buck Run Community Center is located at 735 State.

Cancellation of The American Legion National Organization 2020 Baseball Season

In light of the continuing events resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, effective immediately The American Legion National Organization is implementing the following directives relating to The American Legion National Organization national baseball program for the 2020 season.
1. Any and all previous 2020 American Legion National Organization memos regarding the national baseball program for the 2020 season are retracted and replaced by the following.
2. The American Legion National Organization has cancelled all 2020 season’s Regional Tournaments and The American Legion World Series.
3. Concurrently, The American Legion National Organization has shut down all sponsorship and all involvement in baseball for the 2020 season.
4. This shutdown of all sponsorship and all involvement in baseball for the 2020 season means that those baseball teams that wish to continue playing 2020 season baseball shall be participating in a sporting event not sponsored, nor endorsed in any manner, by The American Legion National Organization, but sponsored and endorsed solely by the group the team is named.
5. Any baseball team that continues play in the 2020 season sponsored by the group the team is named must understand that its team is not playing as an American Legion National Organization “registered” baseball team and it is not playing in an American Legion National Organization baseball program.
6. The complete cancellation of the 2020 American Legion National Organization baseball season means there is no American Legion National Organization baseball program “national rules,” nor are there “national guidelines,” as there is no 2020 American Legion national involvement.
7. In other words, if an American Legion Department has a 2020 season baseball program, then that Department is having “The Department of ‘X’ American Legion Baseball Program – not authorized, nor endorsed by The American Legion National Organization.”
8. Those departments that conduct this 2020 baseball season program will need to determine
their rules, guidelines, schedules, insurance coverage, etc., for their own programs as The
American Legion National Organization will not provide this assistance.
9. The American Legion National Organization has already stopped collecting, and subsequently
returned to all teams any and all national baseball team fees to the respective teams.
10. With the shutdown of the online National American Legion Baseball registration portal, The
American Legion National Organization has stopped referring baseball teams to the K&K
Insurance portal for the 2020 baseball season. The departments that have their own programs
will need to determine what insurance their teams need in order to play in their programs;
The American Legion National Organization will not provide this assistance.
11. All baseball teams that paid to The American Legion National Organization administrative
fees shall have these fees reimbursed to the teams.
12. All other situation(s) that may arise during the 2020 baseball season in a department that elects
to have a 2020 baseball season is a situation for that particular department as that particular
department is solely responsible for its decision to any situation(s) as The American Legion
National Organization staff and volunteers are not authorized to address or help with any
department’s situation(s).

FSCC Football Takes a New Direction with New Coaches

FSCC new coaches, back from left: Cam Robinson-defensive coordinator, Harris Bivin-offensive coordinator, Michael Reynolds-ILB coach, Brant Newman-director of player personnel and defensive line, Amir Gant-receivers coach. Front from left: Kurt Kennedy-quarterback coach, Carson Hunter-head coach, William Henry-special teams coordinator and defensive back coach.

Fort Scott Community College’s football team has a new vision, with all new coaches.

Head coach Carson Hunter was hired in December 2019.

“Our program vision is to recruit, develop, and lead a family of faithful, honest, and fearless leaders to best represent Fort Scott and the community,” Hunter said. “To best represent Fort Scott – academically, socially, and athletically.”

“I think Carson is a great hire,” Alysia Johnston, FSCC president, said. “He is committed to making sure our student-athletes have positive transformational experiences in the classroom and on the field as well as making sure they have a positive impact on the college and community.”

“We are thrilled to have Carson Hunter as the leader of our football program,” FSCC Athletic Director Tom Havron said. ” When we spoke early about the direction of the program, it was very apparent that we both shared the same vision.”

“Coach Hunter is focused on players and coaches who will love their team, love Fort Scott, and love the game,” Havron said.   “He is a man of great character, faith, and values who will lead by example for the young men at Fort Scott Community College.”

Havron has been impressed with Hunter’s work ethic and ability to surround himself with excellent coaches that share a common vision.

“The football program is in very good hands, and I am excited to see the results of the work being put in by the staff and the players,” Havron said.  “The community of Fort Scott will be proud to support this program moving forward.”

Community Engagement Encouraged

“For us to be our best, we need everyone to take part of what we are doing,” Hunter said. “We invite all of Fort Scott to join us as program members – to encourage, support, and engage our student-athletes.”

Hunter said he has been working hard to establish a reputation with Fort Scott and the region, “and everyone that wants to be a member of our program.”

“Program members come in all shapes and sizes,” he said. “Some will be defensive ends, some will be patting everybody on the back. Everyone will have a role, we need the community  to help, and understand that this is their team.”

“And, our players need to be a part of what Fort Scott is doing,” he said. ” We need everyone to let us know how our program can help and serve.  Engage the team, we need them to be a part of what the community is doing. If there is stuff that our guys can be involved in, we want to do it.”

“I want to encourage everyone to follow us on  Facebook at Fort Scott Football and on Twitter @FSCCFOOTBALL,” Hunter said.

All New Coaches

All new FSCC football coaches will be a part of the new direction of the team.

“Some of these guys have worked together before in different places,” Hunter said. “All have Division 1 or professional coaching experience.”

Eagles Boys Defeated by Northeast in Sub-State

The Uniontown Eagle Varsity boys faced off against the Northeast Arma Vikings in their second round of Sub-State last Friday. The boys were defeated 51-54, allowing Arma to advance to the final round.

Luke George and Jake Harvey lead in points, scoring 17 and 13, respectively. Harvey also had 3 assists. Hunter Schaaf had 8 points and 8 rebounds. Clay Sutterby had 6 rebounds, and Drew Perry had 4 assists and steals. “I’m extremely proud of our team,” said Coach Hays. “We came a long way this season. I’m going to miss being around these guys every day. It’s sad that it is over. I enjoyed every minute of this season.”

I couldn’t agree with Coach Hays more. I never managed the boys’ team directly, but I stayed for almost every game since they usually played after the girls. I enjoyed cheering for them from my seat in the pep band or by Rhian, our filmer. I hope our seniors had a great final season, and I hope the rest of the team will come out for basketball again next year.

Eagles Girls Fall to Colgan

Adelay Martin, UHS Sports Media Reporter

The Uniontown Eagles traveled to Yates Center to face the Saint Mary’s Colgan Panthers in the second round of Sub-State. The team fought hard, but were defeated by the Panthers.

Danielle Howard scored 17 points and had 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. She was hurt late in the game so we wish her a speedy recovery. Karleigh Schoenberger had 12 points and 4 rebounds. Alie Fuhrman had 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Gwenyth Fry had 9 rebounds. Sammie Hampton scored 6 points and had 3 assists. Coach Miller said, “We fought the good fight, but we could not overcome the hole we were in. The better team won tonight. Looking back, it is exciting to see the growth of this team over the last 3 years. We were 4-17 in 2018, 11-10 in 2019, and we finished this season 16-6. It is always hard to see our seniors graduate, and it can be difficult to fill the void they leave behind. However, we will continue to develop our athletes so they can be ready to rise to the occasion. The 2020-21 basketball season starts tomorrow for our Lady Eagle basketball program.”

This was an amazing season for the Lady Eagles. Our final record is 16-6 overall and 9-2 in the league. We finished in the league sitting 2nd, just behind Saint Paul. I want to personally thank anyone who supports the Eagles by going to games or simply reading these articles. As a manager, it always makes me smile to see people supporting the team even if they have no relation to any players or coaches. Even people from other schools support our teams (an example of this would be Pleasanton in tonight’s matchup; thanks, P-Town!) I guess I have a couple more articles to write for the Varsity boys if they win against Northeast Arma tomorrow night, but this is it for the girls. I’ve loved every second of this season. Thank you.

Eagles Boys Soar Past Blu-Jays into Second Round

The Uniontown Eagles faced the Pleasanton Blu-Jays in the boys’ first round of sub-state. The boys were victorious against the Jays and will move on to the next round.

The energy in the gym on Tuesday was electric, with a huge crowd there to support the team. Luke George scored 22 points and had 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. Jake Harvey had 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists and steals. Clay Sutterby had 12 points and 8 rebounds. Coach Hays said, “I thought we played one of our best halves of basketball in the first half. We had guys hitting shots and playing with a lot of effort on defense. I’m extremely proud of the boys and how hard they are competing. We look forward to the opportunity to travel to Yates Center and continue playing.”

UHS Basketball Teams Defeated by Girard

Adelay Martin. Submitted photo.

By Adelay Martin, UHS Sports Media Reporter

The Uniontown Eagles played against the Girard Trojans in our last regular-season game. All four of our teams lost to Girard, but Uniontown is still proud of all our athletes. JV players were dismissed from practice, so we hope they had an amazing season!

The Varsity girls were defeated by Girard with a score of 27 to 50. Karleigh Schoenberger scored 12 points and had an assist. Danielle Howard had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Sammie Hampton had 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Gwenyth Fry scored 4 points and had 3 rebounds. Breleigh Harris had 3 rebounds and Sivanah McAnulty had 4. McAnulty and Kaydra Woods both had 2 steals. Coach Miller stated, “We knew coming into this game that it would be a tough one. The matchups were not favorable for us and their ability to go deep into the bench with their rotation would challenge us as the game progressed. However, it was good to play a team of that caliber as we prepare to play Jayhawk for our first round of sub-state.”

The Varsity boys lost to the Trojans 34 to 56. Luke Perry lead the team in points, scoring 9 points. Luke George had 7 points and 6 rebounds and Jake Harvey had 6 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Hunter Schaaf and Clay Sutterby also scored 6 points each, and Schaaf had 6 rebounds while Sutterby garnered 5. Drew Perry had 3 assists. “It was a tough night for our team,” said Coach Hays. “We couldn’t get many shots to fall and their ball pressure gave us trouble. Girard is a good team and they are well coached. We will learn from this one and get ready for sub-state next week.”
