FSCC Men’s Track and Field Wins Conference Championship; Qualify 14 for National Meet

The Fort Scott Community College men’s track and field team traveled to Arkansas City for the regional meet this past weekend. With outstanding performance from many, the Hounds were able to bring home the first KJCCC East Conference Championship in school history. In only the third year of having the program back on campus, the Greyhounds took down the perennial power Cowley College by the score of 224-222. The meet came down to the 4×400 meter relay (Tre Buchanan, Marcus Freeman, Jarvis Miles, Jordan Collins) where the Hounds cruised to a time of 3:10.19, defeating second place Butler Community College by more than 7 seconds. Cowley finished the race in fourth place, giving the Hounds the conference crown.

Coach Philip Redrick on the men’s performance: “This was a complete team victory and came down to the last event. I told the team before the race that we needed to win the 4×400 if we wanted to take home the conference championship. It was an amazing performance and I couldn’t be more proud of the group. It takes everyone on the team competing at a high level to win a conference meet, and they didn’t disappoint.”

While there were many performances which contributed to the win, the Greyhounds were paced by the following conference champions:

Javris Miles – 400 meters – 47.57

Tre Buchanan – 400 hurdles – 52.63

Demarion Smith – High Jump – 1.95m

4×400 Meter Relay (Buchanan, Freeman, Miles, Collins – 3:10.19

4×800 Meter Relay (Lecorian Deboest, Lonnell Johnson, Alex Jaje, Marcus Freeman) – 7:41.41

Next up will be the national meet which will be held in Levelland, Texas starting 5/11/2021. The men’s team has 14 student-athletes who have qualified for the meet. Go Hounds!

FSCC Women’s Track and Field Sweeps Season Conference Championships; Qualify 10 for National Meet

Back in March the Fort Scott Community College women’s track and field team brought home the first conference championship in school history when they took the indoor title. This past weekend, the Hounds again ran through the conference, winning the outdoor title and completing the conference sweep. The meet was again a close competition which came down to the wire, but the Hounds prevailed over rival Cowley College by the score of 190-180.

Coach Redrick on the women’s performance: “This is a special group of women. They knew what they were going to have to do to compete and bring home another title, and they did just that. We had a huge number of special performances over the weekend. I’m so proud of them.”

Leading the way for the Hounds were the following conference champions:

Trinity Sinegal – Long Jump – 5.59m

Damazvia Dames – Long Jump – 5.59m, Triple jump – 12.19m

Rachel Booker – Heptathalon – 3356 points

FSHS Girls Swim Team Results

The FSHS Girls Swim team had a busy week competing in Coffeyville on Monday and in Osawatomie on Wednesday night.
“We celebrated our senior swimmers on Monday Night as well, ” Coach Angie Kemmerer said. “Congratulations on a successful senior season: Dawna Hudiburg, Emily Davenport, Anna Gilmore, and Kourtney Flynn.  Next week the swimming tigers will finish their regular season meets with the League Championship on Wednesday, May 12th in Osawatomie.”

FS Hurricanes Swim Team Pre-Season Parents Meeting on May 5

The Fort Scott Hurricanes Swim Team will be having their pre-season parents meeting and registration on Wednesday, May 5th at 6:00 pm at Buck Run Community Center.

 

The Hurricanes are a competitive summer swim team for kids ages 6U-18.

 

Swimmers need to be able to swim one length of the pool , 25 yards, of any stroke unassisted in order to participate.

 

The Hurricanes practice in the mornings, Monday through Friday starting June 1st-August 6th.

 

Swim meets are on Wednesday nights and on the weekend.

 

Please attend the meeting to learn more and to register your swimmers.

The Fort Scott High School Girls Swim Team competed in Coffeyville on Thursday, April 22 and Monday, April 27.
At both meets the team finished 2nd behind Independence.
FSHS Boys Swimmer and Girls Team Manager Oliver Witt Represented the team at the Miss(ter) FSHS pageant on Saturday, April 24th and brought home the grand prize.

FSHS Girls Swim Team Place At Invitationals

The Fort Scott High School Girls Swim Team is off to the races.

  They swam in the Winfield Invitational on April 6,  where they finished 5th as a team,” said Coach Angie Kemmerer.  “The Tigers had a total of 27 entries for the meet and earned 16 Best Times.”

Annelise Hall took 8th in the 200 IM dropping 2.67 seconds for a best time.

In the 50 Free, Ava Steier took 3rd, Dawna Hudiburg 7th and Alyssa Smith 10th out of 41 swimmers.

  In the 100 Free, Ashley Smith took 11th, Emily Davenport 18th and Annalyse Gilmore 21st out of 37 swimmers.

 Maia Martin took 17.88 seconds off her 500 Free and placed 9th,

“The FSHS 200 yard “A” Free Relay took 4th and dropped 2.88 seconds and our “B” 200 Free Relay took 12th and got a team best time by dropping 6 seconds,” she said.  ” In the 100 Backstroke, Ava Steier took 5th and Kourtney Flynn took 13th out of 27 swimmers. FSHS had a strong showing in the 100 Breast where Annelise Hall placed 4th, Dawna Hudiburg 8th and Ashley Smith 9th out of 27 swimmers.”

 

Tiger Swimmers returned to the pool in Coffeyville on April 13 where they finished the night with a 2nd place team finish.

FSHS Girls Swim Team Competes at Osawatomie

Fort Scott High School Girls Swim Team Competed at Osawatomie on Wednesday against Topeka Hayden, KC Piper, and Osawatomie-Paola-Louisburg.

It was a very competitive meet with all four teams evenly matched.  FSHS finished the night in 4th place overall as a team.

Several individual swimmers had strong finishes and earned personal best times.

The 200 Yard Medley Relay (Dawna Hudiburg, Annelise Hall, Ashley and Alyssa Smith) took 2nd.

In the 50 Free, Ava Steier 1st with a state consideration time, Dawan Hudiburg 3rd with best time and Ashley Smith took 6th with a best time.

In the 100 Butterfly, Annelise Hall took 4th with a best time.

In the 100 Free, Ashley Smith took 2nd and EmilyDavenport was 7th with a best time.

Annalyse Gilmore and Maia Martin both swam the 500 Free and earned best times.

In the 200 Yard Free Relay, FSHS (Ashley Smith, Dawna Hudiburg, Annelise Hall and Alyssa Smith)  took 3rd with a best time.

In the 100 Back, Ava Steier took 3rd with a best time, Kourtney Flynn and Katelyn Dancer both swam best times.

In the 100 Breast Annelise Hall placed 3rd with a best time, Alyssa Smith finished 5th and Dawna Hudiburg was 6th with a best time.

In the 400 Free Relay (Emily Davenport, Kourtney Flynn, Annalyse Gilmore and Ava Steier) finished 5th.

The Fort Scott High School Tigers competed in their first-ever swim meet last night at Turner High School.

The team took second place at the meet with 427 points.

“One of the best things about swimming is that it is both a team sport and an individual sport at the same time,” Coach Angie Kemmerer said. “The focus for all swimmers is on personal growth which is measured by personal best times.  Last night we saw that with 27 out of 29 entries earning personal best times.”
Coach wanted to highlight a few of those swimmers:
200 Free:  Rylan Mason dropped 11.11 seconds and Maia Martin took off 22 seconds.
50 Free: Taylor Wilcox dropped 2.84 seconds and Katelyn Dancer took off 5.33 seconds.
100 Fly: Alyssa Smith took off 3.41 and Maia Martin dropped 7.45 seconds.
100 Free: Ashley Smith took off 2.43, Annelyse Gilmore dropped 2.91, Taylor Wilcox dropped 16.71 seconds, and Katelyn Dancer 21.02 seconds.
200 Free Relay:  A team dropped 6 seconds.
100 Back:  Rylan Mason took off 3.26 seconds.

Fort Scott Community College Rodeo March 12-14: YEE HAW!

The FSCC Spring Rodeo is from March 12-14, at the southern side of the college, located at 2108 S. Horton.

 

There are four hundred contestants from 20 colleges who will participate, said FSCC Assitant Rodeo Coach Caitlyn Wiswell.

Tickets go on sale on March 10 at 2 p.m. To secure a ticket contact the following number, 913-259-8453. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Limited fan space is available with the FSCC COVID-19 regulations listed below.

Fort Scott Community College will allow spectators to attend athletic events up to 25% fan seating capacity.

 

  • FSCC students must present their student ID in order to attend the games.
  • All fans must wear masks for both indoor and outdoor venues.
  • There shall be no concession allowed.
  • No outside food or drinks allowed.
  • Every effort will be made to ensure a 6-ft area marked off separating the teams and participants from the spectators.

UHS BASKETBALL SUB-STATE RESULTS

The Uniontown basketball season came to an end on Friday and Saturday for the girls’ and boys’ teams. We are incredibly proud of how hard every player has worked this season, and look forward to the 2021-22 season next winter.

The boys’ Varsity team played Southeast on Thursday for the second Sub-State round. They won 44-20. Clay Sutterby led that game with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jake Harvey had 12 points and 3 steals; Dawson Dreisbach had 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Drew Perry also had 3 assists.

The Lady Eagles’ season ended on Friday in their game against Humboldt. The score was 41-50. Karleigh Schoenberger had 15 points and 3 steals. Danielle Howard scored 13 points and had 4 assists and 3 steals. Sammie Hampton had 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Rylee Coulter and Addisyn Hall had 3 rebounds, and Coulter had 2 steals.

“It was a tough loss to end a successful season,” Coach Miller said. “After losing our second game of the season in overtime to Erie, we went on a fourteen-game win streak. Our efforts earned us 1st place in the Kenny Hold Memorial Tournament, a shared Three Rivers League title, and the #1 seat in our Sub-State Tournament. We set out to reach some goals this year and we were able to mark a few off the list. We will keep trying, keep improving, and never give up. If we don’t ever reach all of our goals, we will always have the memories of the wonderful people God has introduced to us along the way. Thank you Rhian Gorman, Aiden Holt, Karleigh Schoenberger, and Sammie Hampton for your four years of commitment to our team. We are all better people for having known you four amazing young women.”

The boys’ season ended after losing to Erie on Saturday, 38-42. Luke Perry led with 11 points this game. Jake Harvey, Cade Goodridge, and Clay Sutterby each scored 7 points. Harvey also had 5 boards and 3 steals, while Goodridge had 5 rebounds and Sutterby had 6. Drew Perry had 3 assists.

“I’m extremely proud of our team,” said Coach Hays. “We had the goal since the season began to make the Sub-State championship game. We accomplished that goal. We were really close to making the state tournament. We competed our tails off against Erie, but just came up a little short. I’m thankful for our seniors. They are great kids that will be missed dearly.”

UHS BASKETBALL ROUND 1 SUBSTATE RESULTS 3/1 and 3/2

Uniontown hosted the first round of our 2-A Sub-State games on Monday and Tuesday this week. Both teams were victorious and will move on to the next round, hosted at Humboldt on Thursday and Friday.

The Lady Eagles once again defeated the Southeast Lancers with a score of 58-29. Karleigh Schoenberger scored 23 points and had 2 assists and 2 steals. Danielle Howard had 16 points, 4 assists, and 7 steals. Sammie Hampton had 5 rebounds and Gwenyth Fry had 3.

“The girls played hard and took care of business tonight. We will face Humboldt in the second round on Friday. We’ve got what it takes, but it will take all we’ve got,” said Coach Miller.

Point guard Danielle Howard said, “It was a good win for our last home game. We’re looking forward to another game against Humboldt.”

The boys played Jayhawk and won 50-44. Jake Harvey had 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Luke Perry scored 10 points and had 4 assists. Clay Sutterby also scored 10 points and had 12 rebounds. Dawson Dreisbach had 5 rebounds.

“We’ve reached the point in the season where it’s win or go home,” Coach Hays said. “The boys played really well in spurts tonight against Jayhawk Linn. We turned the ball over too much and didn’t rebound very well, however. Those are both things we will need to get fixed heading into our matchup with Southeast on Thursday.”

UHS BASKETBALL RESULTS vs. CHERRYVALE 2/22/2021

The Uniontown Eagles played some tough games on Monday against Cherryvale. The Chargers defeated both Varsity teams. The boys also played a game in Oswego last Friday, which they won.

The Lady Eagles were defeated by Cherryvale 39-45. Karleigh Schoenberger scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds and 3 assists. Gwen Fry had 5 rebounds, and Rylee Coulter had 4. Laney Covey, Camryn Davis, and Addisyn Hall each had 3 rebounds. Hall and Sammie Hampton also each had 2 steals. The JV team lost 31-36, Hall and Davis scoring 10 and 9 points, respectively. The two also led in rebounds, 6 and 4. Brooklyn Dreisbach and Davis each had 4 steals.

Coach Miller says, “The Varsity and Junior Varsity girls suffered a couple of tough losses tonight. The girls battled hard, but unfortunately fell short. We will put this game behind us and focus on taking on Girard for our final regular-season game.”

The boys lost to Cherryvale 51-68. Jake Harvey scored 22 points and had 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Luke Perry scored 10 points. Drew Perry had 3 assists, Dawson Dreisbach had 6 boards, and Clay Sutterby had 10 rebounds and 3 blocks.

“It was a tough night for our basketball team,” Coach Hays admits. “Cherryvale came out on fire from deep. I liked how we continued to fight and play hard all four quarters. It will be nice to get back to practice tomorrow and work on getting better. Things don’t get easier with Girard coming to town Thursday.”

“Our game against Oswego was a last second schedule change, as both Pleasanton and St. Paul were both unable to play us. I’m glad we were able to squeeze this game in and give our boys another chance to compete. Oswego is a team on the rise and played extremely hard. We were fortunate to pull away in the second half,” Coach Hays says.

UHS BASKETBALL RESULTS vs. SOUTHEAST 2/12/2021

The Eagles played Southeast Cherokee on February 12. The Lady Eagles won, but the boys were defeated.

The girls’ Varsity team won their game 65-41 last Friday. Danielle Howard scored 24 points and had 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 8 steals. Karleigh Schoenberger followed with 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Sammie Hampton had 4 rebounds and Addisyn Hall had 2. Rylee Coulter had 3 assists and Kaydra Woods had 2.

“Great win to wrap up this crazy week,” Coach Miller said. “This is a great group of young ladies. The adversity of playing back to back nights had no effect on their will to win this game. We will get back to work on Monday to prepare for the Crest Lancers.”

The boys lost to Southeast 47-55. Clay Sutterby had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists. Luke Perry scored 13 points and Jake Harvey followed with 12. Harvey also had 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Dawson Dreisbach had 7 boards and 3 assists. Drew Perry had 3 rebounds and 4 assists.

Coach Hays said, “I thought we battled hard against Southeast. We didn’t play our best game, and give credit to Southeast. They played a great game and hit some tough shots down the stretch. We can take a lot from this game. We need to handle adversity better and not make it harder on ourselves to get back in the game. We also need to do a better job of closing out games.”

 

UHS BASKETBALL RESULTS vs. CREST 2/18/2021

The Uniontown Eagles played the Crest Lancers on Thursday, February 18. Both Varsity teams defeated the Lancers.

The Lady Eagles beat the Lancers 61-40. Danielle Howard scored 27 points and had 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 8 steals. Karleigh Schoenberger had 26 points and 3 rebounds. Gwenyth Fry had 6 rebounds, while Sammie Hampton, Kaydra Woods, and Rylee Coulter each had 3. Coulter also had 2 assists and 5 steals. Hampton had 3 assists and 1 steal.

“It has definitely been an insane week for basketball. We were grateful to be able to get back on the court and compete tonight. The girls were able to pull off another win with little preparation. We are hopeful to be able to practice tomorrow to prepare for the final push of the season,” said Coach Miller.

The boys’ Varsity team also defeated Crest with a score of 64-32. Jake Harvey scored 16 points and had 8 rebounds. Clay Sutterby followed with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Cade Goodridge scored 10 points and Luke Perry scored 8. Dawson Dreisbach had 3 assists and 3 blocks. Drew Perry had 7 assists.

“It was nice to see our guys back on the court competing,” Coach Hays said. “For not having played basketball in a week, we shot the ball well and played with great energy. I didn’t feel like our conditioning was an issue. It was a fun night of basketball.”
