Obituary of Agnes Post

Agnes Post, 96, of Fort Scott, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2021 at Diversified Care in Chanute. She was born September 22, 1924, in Moran, Kansas, the daughter of Elmer E. and Susie Agnes (Judge) Norman.

Agnes worked as a Nurse Aide for Mercy and also at area nursing homes.

Survivors include her daughter, Vickie K. McWilliams, of Redfield, Kansas; three sisters, Thelma Main, Bernice Bryson, and Faye Yockey; two grandchildren, Norman Bockover, and Robin Kerr; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Harold Norman, Glen Norman, Marvin Norman, and Tommy Norman; two sisters, Marvelle Blackburn, and Othie Norman; and a grandson, Robert Kerr.

Berta LIdia Rodriguez-Sanchez

Berta Lidia Rodriguez-Sanchez, age 71, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2021, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas.

She was born April 28, 1949, in Morazan, El Salvador, the daughter of Elijio Rodriguez and Antonia Sanchez.

Berta immigrated to the United States in 1983. She lived in Georgia and worked in the area’s poultry processing facilities.

In 2010, she moved to Ft. Scott, Kansas to be near her family who own and operate La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant.

Berta was a woman of faith and a devout Catholic.

She enjoyed playing cards and dominos. She also enjoyed watching the news and keeping up with world events as well as watching soccer games.

Survivors include her daughter, Mirna Santana and husband, Jose and her son Melvin Castillo, and two grandsons, Roger and Allen Rodriguez, all of Ft. Scott.

Also surviving are three brothers and five sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Ramon Rodriguez.

Funeral services and burial will take place at a later date in Gainesville, Georgia.

Ivan "Big Ivan" Gary Folsom Sr.

Ivan “Big Ivan” Gary Folsom Sr., of Deerfield, Mo passed April 2, 2021. Ivan was born on June 7, 1946, the son of Isom and Viola Folsom.
Big Ivan was a family man that enjoyed spending time out in the wilderness.
He was in the West Gate Lodge No. 438 as a Worshipful Master.
He is preceded in death by both his parents, Isom and Viola Folsom; six brothers; one sister and grandson Nate D. Folsom.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Becky Folsom; daughters Tammy (Brian) Miller, Samantha (Carl) Bebee and Christine (Richard) Folsom-Fleig Sr.; son Ivan Gary (Stacey) Folsom Jr.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one foster grandchild, two brothers and one sister.
There will be a Visitation Saturday, April 10 from 9-10 AM, with a funeral service starting at 10 AM at Maple Hill Funeral Home, Kansas City, KS. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Obituary of Elsie Sellen

Elsie Jean Sellen, 93, of Fort Scott, passed away Monday morning, April 5, 2021, at Guest Home Estates, Fort Scott, Kansas. She was born June 16, 1927, in Whiting, Kansas, the daughter of Clifton and Grace (Koger) Belden. She married William Walker Sellen July 13, 1947, in Topeka, Kansas, and he preceded her in death June 14, 2015.

Elsie graduated from Whiting High School in 1945. She graduated from Clark’s Business School in Topeka, Kansas and went on to manage a restaurant, a deli, and a hearing aid company. She was a member of the Wakarusa Presbyterian Church, and attended the First United Methodist Church in Fort Scott. Elsie served as Worthy Matron of the Beulah Chapter of O.E.S. of Carbondale, Kansas, and she sang with the Sweet Adelines in Topeka until she was 80 years of age and sang with them at Carnegie Hall.

Elsie is survived by her children, Patricia Harry and husband Steve of Fort Scott, Kansas, Richard Sellen of Olathe, Kansas, Marcia Sellen and husband Richard DeVoe of Gladstone, Missouri, and Pamela Miller and husband Ross of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband William, she was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Minnie Belden, and a brother, Walter Belden.

Following cremation, Rev. Steve Cole will conduct memorial services 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Scott under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Elsie will be buried with her husband William in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Whiting, Kansas.

Obituary of Edward E. Coulter

Edward “Ed” Earl Coulter, age 72, resident of Farlington, KS, died Monday, April 5, 2021, at his home. He was born July 3, 1948, in Greenfield, MO, the son of Clarence Earl Coulter and Mary Elizabeth Call Coulter. Ed lived in Ft. Scott, KS, for 55 years working as a mechanic and tree trimmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the races, and working on cars.

Survivors include 5 children, Tammy Eaton and Dennis, Mariann Mackley and Norman, Eddie Joe Coulter and Kelly, Lance Coulter and Erin, and Tony Ogle; 19 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; 6 siblings; and special friend Wilma Wittenberg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Coulter; daughter Tonya Belle; 5 siblings; and his parents.

Pastor Randy Coulter will conduct graveside services at 10:00 AM Friday, April 9th, in the Rosebank Cemetery, Mulberry, KS. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Thursday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Obituary of Thora Shinn

Thora May Shinn, age 94, a former resident of Iola, Kansas, and more recently of Uniontown, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2021, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas.  She was born March 5, 1927, at her grandparents’ home south of Bronson, Kansas, the daughter of Roy Nichols and Mabel Watson Nichols.  Thora graduated from the Bronson High School with the Class of 1944.  Following high school, Thora took the train to Kansas City and worked for a time at Fred Harvey’s Restaurant in Union Station.  She married her high school sweetheart, James O. Shinn on January 24, 1946, after he returned home from serving in World War II.  They later settled in Iola, where Jim worked as a barber and Thora worked as a phlebotomist at the Allen County Hospital.  Thora enjoyed genealogy and compiled several books of family history on both her family as well as her husband’s side of the family.  She also enjoyed bowling.  Following Jim’s death on October 30, 2011, Thora moved to Uniontown to be near her son, Alan, and his family.  She attended the First Missionary Baptist Church of Uniontown.
Survivors include her sons, Alan Shinn and wife, Becky, of Uniontown, Kansas and Jack Shinn, of Pittsburg, Kansas, six grandchildren, Kevin Shinn (Diana), of Uniontown, Kansas, Melissa Gage (Jason), of Louisburg, Kansas, Crystal Shinn, Brett Shinn (Miriah), Tabitha Shinn and Amber Sanchez (Matt), all of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and ten great-grandchildren, Emily Jefferies (Austin), Holly Richwine (Dylan), Lauren Shinn, Brayden, Bryce and Brock Gage, Blade and Aiden Feather, Nichole Schwermer and ShiAnne Sanchez.  Also surviving is a brother, Don Nichols of Wichita, Kansas.    In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Shinn, and two sisters, Reta Jones and Margaret Ruckman.
Rev. Marty Dewitt will conduct graveside services at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, April 7th at the Turkey Creek Cemetery north of Uniontown.  The family will receive friends at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown on Wednesday from 1:00 P.M until leaving for the cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the First Missionary Baptist Church or the Bronson Alumni Association at FSCC and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Obituary of Kevin Bryan Shelton

Kevin Bryan Shelton, age 56, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday, March 30, 2021, at his home.

He was born May 14, 1964, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, the son of John Newton Shelton and Geraldine Marsh Shelton.

Kevin had been employed by Smico Norvell, Klein Industries and later for Ft. Scott Greenhouse.

He liked tinkering with electronics and enjoyed HAM radio.  He also enjoyed woodworking and fishing.

 

Survivors include his mother, Geraldine Shelton of Ft. Scott; four brothers, Larry Shelton (Cathy) of Ft. Scott, Steven Shelton (Roxanne), of Woodstock, Illinois, Darryl Shelton (Deb), of Gardner, Kansas, and Don Shelton (Terri) also of Ft. Scott and a sister, Sharon Shelton of Ft. Scott.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Shelton and two brothers, Michael Shelton and James Shelton.

 

There was cremation.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Obituary of Edward Dalton

Edward Everett “Ed” Dalton, age 87, passed away on March 30, 2021 in Louisburg, KS.  He was born on February 3, 1934 in Mapleton, KS to Ruth (Cook) Dalton & Thomas W. Dalton.

He attended Fort Scott Schools and worked at the Western Insurance/American States Insurance Companies, retiring in 1989 after 31 years.

He married Shirley I. Robinson in 1954.  She passed away in 1969.  He married Gloria A. (Stanley) Huff in 1974.

Both Ed and Gloria had 2 children, so they became a family of 6.

While living in Fort Scott, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as both a deacon and an elder.  He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club.

He was proud of his military service having been in the Army and stationed in Germany and France from 1956-1958 as part of a heavy equipment battalion to rebuild Europe after World War II.

He was small in stature but big in heart and loved by many.  Upon retirement, he and Gloria moved to Olathe, KS to be near their children and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family and supporting his grandchildren in various sports and activities.

He is survived by his children Suzanne Hughes and her husband Mark of Monument, CO: Brenda Douglas and her husband Mark of Edgerton, KS; Greg Dalton and his wife Shelly of Louisburg, KS, and grandchildren Chris (Moira) Beveridge, Jake (Amanda) Douglas, Jared (Chloe) Douglas, Amberly (Aaron) Ramsey, Hannah Dalton and Thomas Dalton, as well as his brother Ron Dalton of Olathe, KS and several nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria, his daughter Penny Wicken, his brothers Robert, Charley and Floyd and sisters Margaret and Roberta.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct funeral services at 12:30 AM Friday, April 2nd, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Private family burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 until service time Friday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Marilyn Barker

Marilyn Margaret Barker, age 76, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 26, 2021. She was born on January 17, 1945 in Parsons, KS to Roy Emil Tarvin and Alice “Evaleen” Duffield Tarvin.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Melvin Eugene Barker of Fort Scott, KS; two sons and one daughter, Mark Eugene Barker and wife Renea of Johnston, IA, Paul Leroy Barker and wife Tammy of Peculiar, MO, and Ruthanne Renee Arace and husband Mike of Kansas City, KS; two sisters, Edwina Brennon of Erie, KS and Jackie Cross and husband George of Parsons, KS; four grandchildren, Ethan William Barker, Ellie Elizabeth Barker, Tessa Margaret Barker, and Isaac Eugene Barker, and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Betty Jo Collins and Carolyn Evel, brother David Tarvin, two brothers-in-law, Dale Evel and Jim Sexton; and two sisters-in-law, Gwen Tarvin and Mary Allen.

Marilyn was devoted to her earthly home and her faith. She combined her love of Jesus and children in owning and operating the Sunbeam Christian Preschool for over 30 years. In addition, she worked with children and youth in church. She was a member of First Sothern Baptist Church. During her walk on earth, Marilyn modeled living her life for the Lord with devotion and love to her family who look forward to being reunited with her in heaven.

Matt Hamilton will conduct the Celebration of Life service at 11:30 AM Friday, April 9th, at First Sothern Baptist Church, Fort Scott. Private burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until service time at the church. Obituary of Rosa Buras

Rosa Marie Buras, age 86, a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2021, at the Medicalodge of Fort Scott.

She was born November 27, 1935, in Liberal, Missouri, the daughter of George Garrison and Ruth Arline Harper Garrison.

She graduated from Fort Scott High School.

Rosa married George Anthony Buras III, on July 28, 1990 in Fort Scott.

She worked at White Grill and later as a nurse’s aid at Fort Scott Manor.

She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and the Cherry Grove Baptist Church.

Rosa enjoyed flowers, gardening, and loved to travel.

She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Gerhardt, and husband Jerald Sr., of Miami, Oklahoma, and four nephews; she is preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, three brothers, Melvin, Claude, and Roy Garrison, and two sisters, Lucy Taylor and Alta Kramer.

Rev. Ken Ansell will conduct graveside services Monday, April 5, 2021 at the U.S. National Cemetery.

Obituary of John Henry Bower

John Henry Bower, age 84, a resident of rural Deerfield, Missouri, passed away Friday, March 26, 2021, at his home.  He was born May 3, 1936, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the son of Jesse Bower and June Dunbar Bower.

He had served with the United States Army.

John married Amelia E. Jones on July 17, 1964, at Miami, Oklahoma.

John had worked for several years as a truck driver.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and exploring the outdoors with his grandchildren.

He also liked to garden and watch western movies.

Survivors include his wife, Amelia, of the home; and children, Rick Jones, of Ft. Scott, Jill Love and husband, Ron, Tony Bower, and Jason Bower and wife, Thabena, all of Deerfield; twelve grandchildren, Dustin Jones, Kendria Brown, Josh Jones, Haley Jones, and Garrett, Alyson Love, Quentin Love, Gavin Love, Evan Love, Jessica Bower, and fiancé, Jacob, Rebecca Bower, Micala Bower and Preslee Bower and ten great-grandchildren, Elijah, Hannah, Faith, Glory, Silas, Jordan, Romey, Madison, Taylor and David.  Also surviving are two sisters, Mable Green, of Colorado and Roberta Rickman, of Girard, Kansas and two brothers, Perry Bower and wife, Helen and Chet Bower and wife, Linda, all of Ft. Scott, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his son, Doug Bower, three brothers, Jay, Floyd and Leroy Bower and a sister, Margaret Rhodes.

There was cremation and no services will be held at this time.

Obituary of William Carl Jowers

William Carl Jowers

William Carl Jowers, 69, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri after a battle with COVID 19.

Mr. Jowers was born on December 2, 1951 to the late Betty Sarah Harden Jowers, of Fitzgerald, GA and Carl Edison Jowers, of Rhine, GA. William is a graduate of Fitzgerald Highschool Class of 1969. William is survived by his former wife Leonida Arboleda Jowers, Calapacuan, Subic Zambales Philippines who he married in 1974 and their three children Lars Michael Jowers (Alicia), Justin Leif Jowers, and Sarah Ashley Jowers. He also leaves behind grandchildren Elijah Jordan Jowers, Preston David Jowers, Zoë Isabella Jowers, Lily Leonida Jowers, Sophia Rose Jowers, and William Cardell Norton.

In 1995 he married Myra Barco Jowers of Jacksonville, Florida they have four furry babies Miller, Kahlua, Rebel and Ebony. William leaves behind two stepchildren Kevin Pickett (Pamela) their children, and Jennifer Johnson (Michael) and their children.

Carl was a Veteran Petty Officer First Class of the United States Navy (1970-1991) of the Vietnam War Era. He earned many decorations such as Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Fifth Good Conduct Award, Second Meritorious Unit Commendation, Second Battle E Award, Fourth Overseas Service Ribbon, and Second National Defense Service Medal.

Carl began his post graduate education while in the Navy, attending a variety of colleges in California and Florida. He earned his master’s degree from Jacksonville University. Following his retiring from the United States Navy Carl was employed by Florida State College at Jacksonville (formerly FJC, FCCJ) as Manager of Testing and Assessments (1991-2013) and intermittently teaching GED classes before retiring again.

Carl was an avid genealogist who was able to connect to ancestors, through his tireless research, who provided him eligibility for his expressing pride of his Southern heritage by joining the Sons of Confederate Veterans Forest’s Escort Camp 1239 in Villa Rica, GA. He and his wife, Myra then purchased a trike so that he could become a member of the Mechanized Cavalry. Following their move to Fort Scott, KS he transferred to the Thomas J Key Camp1854 in Kansas City, KS. With his servant’s heart he spent most of his retired life giving back to Veterans.

Carl was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Olson-Frary Burkhart Post 1165 in Ft. Scott, KS and was currently serving as Commander of the American Legion Thompson – Harkey Post 25 in Ft. Scott as well as Kansas District 2 Adjutant. Carl had the unique ability to join all four components of the American Legion family, The Sons of the American Legion, The Legion Riders and the American Legion Auxiliary which was formerly only open to female spouses of Legionnaires but recently opened their membership to ”spouses” of veterans who are Legionnaires. He earned his eligibility through his wife, Myra, being an Air Force veteran and Legionnaire.

Carl will be dearly missed by his wife of 25 years, family, friends, brother and sisters in arms, and his pets.

Memorial services will be held in Fort Scott, KS at the Cheney Witt Funeral Chapel, 201 S Main St. on Sat, April 3, 2021 at 1:00 PM and later in his hometown, Fitzgerald GA, at Prospect Baptist Church.
