Obituary of Helen Irene Fritter

Helen Irene Fritter, age 102, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Thursday, November 12, 2020, at Guest Home Estates in Ft. Scott.

She was born on September 21, 1918, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Harry and Lessie Fetters Beal. Following high school, Irene worked for a candy factory in Joplin, MO, a tire factory in Kansas City, and then back in Ft. Scott at Key Work Clothes until marriage.

She married Johnnie Fritter of December 2, 1945, in Ft. Scott. He preceded her in death in 2004.

Irene enjoyed quilting, playing cards, reading, crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family. She was an excellent cook with her specialties including noodles, hot rolls, and goulash. Irene attended the Clayton Christian Church in Eve, MO.

Survivors include 2 sons, Jim Fritter, Sheldon, MO, and Jack Fritter and wife Marilyn, Richards, MO; 3 grandchildren, Dennis, Daniel, and Kyle Fritter; 9 great-grandchildren, Denton, Grace, Dani, William, and Piper Fritter, Austin Bolinger, and Pierse, Parker, and Paden Dennison; and a special niece, Martha Fritter.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Bill Fritter; a brother, Lewis Beal; and a sister, Grace Bird.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct graveside services at 10:00 AM Monday, November 16th, at the Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until leaving for the cemetery Monday morning at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of John Kruger

John Fredrick Kruger

John Fredrick Kruger, age 68, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at his home.

He was born February 11, 1952, in Ft. Scott, the son of Elvin and Margaret Johnson Kruger. He graduated from Uniontown high school with the class of 1970. He married Vicki Harris on April 22, 1972, in Ft. Scott.

John worked for Mid-Continental Restoration for many years until retirement. He enjoyed playing slow pitch softball with his many friends. He was a big fan of the KC Chiefs, KU basketball, stock car racing, and Elvis music. John was known as “Chicken Man” for his prowess in raising fighting chickens.

He attended the Fort Scott Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife Vicki of the home; a son, Leroy Kruger and wife Christina, Ft. Scott; a daughter Brooke Bolin and husband Ron, Ft. Scott; 2 sisters, Linda Turner and Gail Dalton of Ft. Scott; a sister-in-law, Terri Shelton and husband Don, Ft. Scott; 4 grandchildren, Jordan Holdridge, Austin Kruger, Lexi Kruger, and Raegan Bolin; 3 great-grandchildren, Blakyn, Kyson, and Cali Holdridge with one more on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rod Perez and Rev. Virgil Peck will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Tuesday, November 17th, at the Fort Scott Church of the Nazarene.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Monday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Barbara J. Stewart

Barbara Jean Stewart, 94, of Fort Scott, formerly of Xenia, passed away Tuesday evening, November 10, 2020 at her home.

She was born May 30, 1926, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Guy Russell and Agnes Sarah (Davis) Boyd.

She married Myron Leslie Stewart on December 8, 1945, in Osawatomie, Kansas and he preceded her in death September 1, 1996.

Barbara graduated from high school in Blue Mound, Kansas. After marrying Myron, she spent many happy years as a farm wife. Barbara was also an avid Bingo player, gaining many close friends.

Barbara is survived by her three children, Robert Stewart and wife Karen of Fulton, Kansas, Jeanette Church and her husband Robert of Xenia, Kansas, and Carol Didier and her husband Tom, of Wheatland, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and family members.

In addition to her husband Myron, she was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Guy Boyd Jr., a sister, Reta Maxine Allenbrand, a grandson, and a great-granddaughter.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct graveside services at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2020, at the Bronson Cemetery in Bronson, Kansas under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

There will be a dinner and a Celebration of Life following the graveside service at the Blue Mound High School.

Obituary of Linda Poyner

Linda Joyce Poyner, age 70, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away early Monday, November 9, 2020, at her home.

She was born January 27, 1950, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Arthur Scott Bolden and Neva Ruth Wolfe Bolden.

Linda graduated from the Ft. Scott High School.  She married Jerry Dean Poyner on September 27, 1968, in Ft. Scott.

In earlier years, Linda worked for the Western Insurance Company and then for Lincoln National.  She later worked at Hall’s/Bowman’s/Pumpin’ Pete’s convenience store on Wall Street for several years.

Above all, Linda was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed providing for her family.

Linda had many friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.

She was known to frequently send out cards for all occasions.  In the fall, Linda enjoyed Halloween and will be remembered for passing out pickles to the trick-or-treaters.

She also enjoyed picking up and shelling pecans. Other hobbies included reading, crocheting and cooking.   Linda liked watching the Hallmark Channel and  enjoyed classic television shows and movies like The Waltons and Gone With the Wind.  She was raised in the Community of Christ Church.

 

Survivors include her husband, Jerry, of the home; three children, Jeff Poyner, Kirk Poyner and wife, Vanessa and Kam Poyner, all of Ft. Scott and an adopted daughter, Mary Jane Young and husband, Brad, also of Ft. Scott and grandchildren, Kolby (Megan), Cierra (Joey), Karis, Samantha, Jeron, Heston, Blaice, Kenady, Lakin, Carter, McKenzie, Caden, Sophia and Wyatt.  Also surviving are four brothers, Gary (Kristy) Bolden, of Pittsburg, Kansas, John (Adele) Bolden, of Carl Junction, Missouri, Dennis (Joyce) Boldon, of Lisbon Falls, Maine, and Douglas Bolden, of Ft. Scott, and a sister, Becky (Richard) Castillo, of Marshall, Missouri.  Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Debbie Archer, Linda Lundy and Cheryl Culp, numerous nieces and nephews and life-long friends, Ludean and Gene Evans and Virginia Viel.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Debra Ruth.

 

Private graveside services will be held on Friday at the U. S. National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Tranquilino “Paul” Baldonado

Tranquilino Paulino Baldonado

Tranquilino Paulino “Paul” Baldonado, passed away, Saturday October 31, 2020, in Crystal City Missouri after hospitalization and a short time in hospice.

He was born March 11, 1940 in Canjilon New Mexico to Paublin Baldonado and Rebecca (Maestas) Baldonado.

Paul graduated from Trenton High School in Trenton NE in 1957.

He also served in the Air Force for four years.

Paul was married to Marilyn Haarberg in 1963.

He had a long career with Firestone throughout the Midwest.

He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Scott Kansas.

He served as volunteer for a several years at Mercy Hospital Fort Scott.

Paul was a lifelong Nebraska Cornhuskers fan.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn Baldonado; a sister Maria Lilia Frakes; daughter Kyla Scarborough, two sons Paul Ryan Baldonado and Eric Baldonado, and wife Darcy, and granddaughters, Anna and Elena Baldonado.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joe Baldonado and Max Baldonado, and three sisters, Maria Cordie Lopez, Maria Felo Ferguson, and Maria Lizzy Delgado.

There was cremation.

A small private burial will take place at a later date in the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main St.

Obituary of Joseph Harper

Joseph Eldon Harper, age 75, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 of kidney failure and complications of COVID. A native of Fort Scott, Kansas, Joseph spent the last few years of his life at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada, Missouri.

He is survived by a spouse, Gertrude (Johnston) Harper, two children: Mary Jo & Richard Harper, two grandchildren: Xavier Huffman and Cobie Haynes, one great-grandchild: Mabel Haynes, and family David Shaffer, Carroll Findley, Edna Stein, Wade and Julie Pellett, Nicole Pellett, Elly Booth, Weston Pellett, Dakota Brown, Jacob Pellett, Michael Nighswonger, Thomas Nighswonger, Brian Nighswonger, and Arria Booth. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles (Charlie) Harper and Mary (Pellett) Harper, sisters: Karen Shaffer and Peggy Findley, and family Larry Stein, Leona and Lewis Dreyer, Bud Johnston, Toby Nighswonger, Robbie Stein, and Tori and Sheena Peirano.

Joe was born June 29, 1945 in Fort Scott, Kansas to Charlie and Mary Harper. He grew up in the country north of town, helping his family run the farmland with his sisters Karen and Peggy.

Until the 4th grade, Joe didn’t care much for reading, but after a kind teacher at Bunker Hill helped him, reading became a passion for him that he passed on to his children.

Joseph married a Blue Mound girl, Gertrude Johnston, February 10, 1967, before enlisting in the United States Air Force August 10, 1967. Joseph and Gertrude spent two and a half years in Japan during his service. During this time, he was an assistant coach for Gertrude’s softball team and they enjoyed getting lost at the World’s Fair in Osaka. He was discharged as an E-4 Sergeant in 1971 and they moved to Glendale, Arizona where they began teaching Wade and Nicole how to hunt (always remember the Glenn Miller 8-tracks) before having children.

After Mary Jo and Richard were born, they came home to Fort Scott where Joseph assisted his mother in running the store on Main Street: Master Printers. Through the store, he was also a traveling salesman once a week, known as the “Laughing Salesman.”

After retirement, he enjoyed driving a bus for USD 234 Fort Scott. The kids were good company and he loved traveling where he could enjoy the sights and then take a nap or read a book until the kids were ready to come home.

Joe was in DeMolay then a Mason of the Rising Sun Lodge and a Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 13, Fort Scott.

After graduating from Fort Scott High School and after service, he attended Glendale Community College and Arizona State University.

Joseph loved hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, and attending music performances of his kids.

Any who heard his laugh knew who it belonged to and where it was coming from. The laughter will ring through those who have been left behind, though his has been silenced.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 9th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Masonic and Eastern Star services will also be held at the chapel.  A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday at the U. S. National Cemetery in Ft. Scott.

Obituary of Rolene Lowry

Rolene Lowry, age 70, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Tuesday, November 3, 2020, at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg, KS.

She was born on December 30, 1949, in Moran, KS, the daughter of Ralph and Phyllis Jackson Miller. She grew up in Selma, KS, attending country school there. She graduated from Blue Mound high school. Rolene then obtained her cosmetology degree from Pittsburg State. She worked for a beauty shop in Erie, KS, before working at Western Insurance Company in Ft. Scott

There she would meet her eventual husband. She married Leon Lowry on July 8, 1973, in Selma, KS.   

She later would begin work for USD235 in Uniontown and continued for 31 years.

Rolene enjoyed reading Christian novels and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Mt. Orum Baptist Church for 13 years before transferring to the Xenia Baptist Church for the past 20 years.

Survivors include her husband Leon of the home; son Chad Lowry of the home; daughter Candace Jobe and husband Joel, Ft. Scott; step son Kurk Lowry; step daughter Angie Eck and husband Dave; her mother, Phyllis Miller, Iola, KS; 2 sisters, Pat Lasley and husband Denny, Moran, KS, and Linda Swisher, Winfield, KS; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved grand dog Rudy.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Rev. Randy Smith will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 7th at the West Bourbon Elementary School Gym.

Burial will follow in the Uniontown Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Roxine Poznich

Roxine Poznich, age 73, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Tuesday, November 3, 2020, at her home.

She was born in San Angelo, TX, the daughter of Paul Hufstedler and Ruby Allison. Ruby later married Bob Roe, who raised Roxine as his own daughter.

Roxine married Johnie Poznich in 1998 in Weir, KS. He preceded her in death in 2008.

Roxine worked for Mercy Hospital in Ft. Scott from 1991 until 2018.

She also owned and operated Books & Grannies bookstore.

She was an avid gardener, both flower and vegetable. She also enjoyed square dancing.

Roxine was an exceedingly kind person who embraced many people in her life.

Survivors include 3 sons, David Everett, Dwayne Everett, and John Needham; 2 daughters, Fara Simons and Sarah Tharrett; 13 grandchildren, Isaac, Brynn, Ellen, Taryn, Wesley, Morgan, Isabella, Truman, Carson, Allison, Eva, Ben, and Adam; 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including a nephew Seth and his wife Denise who cared for Roxine; and many friends and customers from the bookstore.

 In addition to her husband Johnie, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Johnny, a sister Brenda; and a dear friend Marilyn Pyne.

There was cremation.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 PM Saturday evening November 7th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Rachelle Renee Smith

Rachelle Renee Smith, age 37, a resident of Fort Scott, KS, passed away November 2, 2020 in her home.
She was born October 25, 1983, in Fort Scott, the daughter of Charles Ernest Elliott Jr. and Kenna Kay Elliott.
She was married to Mark Smith October 9, 2004-2017, and they created 2 wonderful boys, Logan Thomas, and Gavin Michael.
Rachelle was a homemaker and dedicated mother, she enjoyed decorating her house with interesting finds from antique stores, lived for the month October and anything Halloween with Christmas being a very close second on the list of her favorite things.
She had a huge love for most animals but especially German shorthairs.
In n 2013 She kicked cancers ass and then became a badass warrior of GVHD. She fought for 7.5 years against the disease and exited this life with a sigh of relief.
Survivors include her sons Logan and Gavin Smith of the home and her favorite furry companion Ellie, her father Charles Elliott Jr, her sisters Candace Martin and husband Anthony, Kayla Hall and husband Dustin, and multiple nieces and nephews, Alyssa Martin, Konner Kim, Mallorie Hall, Libbie Hall, Grayson Hall and Makenna Martin.  Also surviving are her grandparents GK and Sharon Miller of Tallahassee, FL, and several aunts and uncles in various places.
  She was preceded in death by her mother Kenna Elliott and her paternal grandparents Charles and Mary Elliott.
Allen Povenmire will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Friday, November 6th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Obituary of Juanita Povenmire

Juanita Mae Povenmire, age 93, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Thursday, October 29, 2020, at Guest Home Estates, Ft. Scott.

She was born September 9, 1927, in Parker, KS, the daughter of Vern and Clara Frances Milburn Reed. She married John “Dean” Povenmire on December 7, 1947, in Ft. Scott. He preceded her in death on April 16, 2004.

Juanita babysat for several children after school through the years. She enjoyed playing bingo with friends.

She was someone who never met a stranger. She touched the lives of all she met. Even after speech had left, she could always give a wink and a smile. Juanita was a past President of the Ladies Auxiliary of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and a member of O.E.S. She was a past member of the Community Christian Church.

Survivors include 2 sons, Danny Povenmire, Las Vegas, NV, and Allen Povenmire and wife Teri, Ft. Scott, KS; a sister, Wilma Strickland, Pleasant Hill, MO; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Dean, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Povenmire; a daughter, Linda Sheppard; 5 brothers, Earl, Roy, Vaun, Marion, and Richard Reed; and a sister, Helen Singmaster.

Pastor Don Andrews will conduct funeral Services at 11:00 AM Thursday, November 5th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Private family burial will take place in U. S. National Cemetery.

Obituary of Warren Davis

Thomas Warren Davis, age 100, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away early Thursday, October 29, 2020, at his home.

He was born October 1, 1920, in Redfield, Kansas, the son of Albert E. Davis and Gladys Boone Davis.

Warren graduated from Uniontown High School with the Class of 1941.  He married Birdean Ward on January 22, 1943.

Shortly after their marriage, Warren was called into active duty with the United States Army.  He participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy Beach on June 6, 1944.  He went on to serve in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe.  He was honorably discharged in December of 1945.  Following his military service, Warren returned to the Redfield area where he farmed for several years.

He later moved to Ft. Scott and began a career with the Water Treatment Plant.  He worked there for many years and later retired as Superintendent.  The Davis Lift Station is named in his honor.

His first wife, Birdean, preceded him in death on January 22, 1989.

Warren later married Roberta Hixon on July 20, 1991.  She passed away on August 28th of this year.

Warren was a longtime member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with members of the community.

 

Survivors include his son, Jim Davis, of Republic, Missouri and six grandchildren, Matt (Lori) Davis of Ft. Scott, Jamie (Ethan) Bryan, of Springfield, Missouri, Carrie (Cory) West, of Alvin, Texas, Heather (Grant) Hartman and Erica (Brett) Kramer, all of Ft. Scott, and Taryn Davis, of Springfield, Missouri, and a step-granddaughter, Lacey (Dean) Kinzer of Mt. Vernon, Missouri.  Also surviving are three brothers, Albert Davis, of Hermitage, Missouri, John Davis of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Gerald Davis, of Iola, Kansas.

In addition to Birdean and Roberta, Warren was preceded in death by a son, Tom Davis, a grandson, Mark Davis, three brothers, Harvey, Glen and Jack Davis and two sisters, Ruth Gilfillan and Betty McCreay.

 

Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 7th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial with military honors will follow in the Woods Cemetery near Redfield, Kansas.
