Obituary of Rolene Lowry

Rolene Lowry, age 70, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Tuesday, November 3, 2020, at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg, KS.

She was born on December 30, 1949, in Moran, KS, the daughter of Ralph and Phyllis Jackson Miller. She grew up in Selma, KS, attending country school there. She graduated from Blue Mound high school. Rolene then obtained her cosmetology degree from Pittsburg State. She worked for a beauty shop in Erie, KS, before working at Western Insurance Company in Ft. Scott

There she would meet her eventual husband. She married Leon Lowry on July 8, 1973, in Selma, KS.   

She later would begin work for USD235 in Uniontown and continued for 31 years.

Rolene enjoyed reading Christian novels and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Mt. Orum Baptist Church for 13 years before transferring to the Xenia Baptist Church for the past 20 years.

Survivors include her husband Leon of the home; son Chad Lowry of the home; daughter Candace Jobe and husband Joel, Ft. Scott; step son Kurk Lowry; step daughter Angie Eck and husband Dave; her mother, Phyllis Miller, Iola, KS; 2 sisters, Pat Lasley and husband Denny, Moran, KS, and Linda Swisher, Winfield, KS; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved grand dog Rudy.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Rev. Randy Smith will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 7th at the West Bourbon Elementary School Gym.

Burial will follow in the Uniontown Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Roxine Poznich

Roxine Poznich, age 73, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Tuesday, November 3, 2020, at her home.

She was born in San Angelo, TX, the daughter of Paul Hufstedler and Ruby Allison. Ruby later married Bob Roe, who raised Roxine as his own daughter.

Roxine married Johnie Poznich in 1998 in Weir, KS. He preceded her in death in 2008.

Roxine worked for Mercy Hospital in Ft. Scott from 1991 until 2018.

She also owned and operated Books & Grannies bookstore.

She was an avid gardener, both flower and vegetable. She also enjoyed square dancing.

Roxine was an exceedingly kind person who embraced many people in her life.

Survivors include 3 sons, David Everett, Dwayne Everett, and John Needham; 2 daughters, Fara Simons and Sarah Tharrett; 13 grandchildren, Isaac, Brynn, Ellen, Taryn, Wesley, Morgan, Isabella, Truman, Carson, Allison, Eva, Ben, and Adam; 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including a nephew Seth and his wife Denise who cared for Roxine; and many friends and customers from the bookstore.

 In addition to her husband Johnie, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Johnny, a sister Brenda; and a dear friend Marilyn Pyne.

There was cremation.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 PM Saturday evening November 7th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Rachelle Renee Smith

Rachelle Renee Smith, age 37, a resident of Fort Scott, KS, passed away November 2, 2020 in her home.
She was born October 25, 1983, in Fort Scott, the daughter of Charles Ernest Elliott Jr. and Kenna Kay Elliott.
She was married to Mark Smith October 9, 2004-2017, and they created 2 wonderful boys, Logan Thomas, and Gavin Michael.
Rachelle was a homemaker and dedicated mother, she enjoyed decorating her house with interesting finds from antique stores, lived for the month October and anything Halloween with Christmas being a very close second on the list of her favorite things.
She had a huge love for most animals but especially German shorthairs.
In n 2013 She kicked cancers ass and then became a badass warrior of GVHD. She fought for 7.5 years against the disease and exited this life with a sigh of relief.
Survivors include her sons Logan and Gavin Smith of the home and her favorite furry companion Ellie, her father Charles Elliott Jr, her sisters Candace Martin and husband Anthony, Kayla Hall and husband Dustin, and multiple nieces and nephews, Alyssa Martin, Konner Kim, Mallorie Hall, Libbie Hall, Grayson Hall and Makenna Martin.  Also surviving are her grandparents GK and Sharon Miller of Tallahassee, FL, and several aunts and uncles in various places.
  She was preceded in death by her mother Kenna Elliott and her paternal grandparents Charles and Mary Elliott.
Allen Povenmire will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Friday, November 6th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Obituary of Juanita Povenmire

Juanita Mae Povenmire, age 93, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Thursday, October 29, 2020, at Guest Home Estates, Ft. Scott.

She was born September 9, 1927, in Parker, KS, the daughter of Vern and Clara Frances Milburn Reed. She married John “Dean” Povenmire on December 7, 1947, in Ft. Scott. He preceded her in death on April 16, 2004.

Juanita babysat for several children after school through the years. She enjoyed playing bingo with friends.

She was someone who never met a stranger. She touched the lives of all she met. Even after speech had left, she could always give a wink and a smile. Juanita was a past President of the Ladies Auxiliary of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and a member of O.E.S. She was a past member of the Community Christian Church.

Survivors include 2 sons, Danny Povenmire, Las Vegas, NV, and Allen Povenmire and wife Teri, Ft. Scott, KS; a sister, Wilma Strickland, Pleasant Hill, MO; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Dean, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Povenmire; a daughter, Linda Sheppard; 5 brothers, Earl, Roy, Vaun, Marion, and Richard Reed; and a sister, Helen Singmaster.

Pastor Don Andrews will conduct funeral Services at 11:00 AM Thursday, November 5th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Private family burial will take place in U. S. National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM Thursday until service time at the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Ft. Scott, KS 66701.

Obituary of Warren Davis

Thomas Warren Davis, age 100, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away early Thursday, October 29, 2020, at his home.

He was born October 1, 1920, in Redfield, Kansas, the son of Albert E. Davis and Gladys Boone Davis.

Warren graduated from Uniontown High School with the Class of 1941.  He married Birdean Ward on January 22, 1943.

Shortly after their marriage, Warren was called into active duty with the United States Army.  He participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy Beach on June 6, 1944.  He went on to serve in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe.  He was honorably discharged in December of 1945.  Following his military service, Warren returned to the Redfield area where he farmed for several years.

He later moved to Ft. Scott and began a career with the Water Treatment Plant.  He worked there for many years and later retired as Superintendent.  The Davis Lift Station is named in his honor.

His first wife, Birdean, preceded him in death on January 22, 1989.

Warren later married Roberta Hixon on July 20, 1991.  She passed away on August 28th of this year.

Warren was a longtime member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with members of the community.

 

Survivors include his son, Jim Davis, of Republic, Missouri and six grandchildren, Matt (Lori) Davis of Ft. Scott, Jamie (Ethan) Bryan, of Springfield, Missouri, Carrie (Cory) West, of Alvin, Texas, Heather (Grant) Hartman and Erica (Brett) Kramer, all of Ft. Scott, and Taryn Davis, of Springfield, Missouri, and a step-granddaughter, Lacey (Dean) Kinzer of Mt. Vernon, Missouri.  Also surviving are three brothers, Albert Davis, of Hermitage, Missouri, John Davis of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Gerald Davis, of Iola, Kansas.

In addition to Birdean and Roberta, Warren was preceded in death by a son, Tom Davis, a grandson, Mark Davis, three brothers, Harvey, Glen and Jack Davis and two sisters, Ruth Gilfillan and Betty McCreay.

 

Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 7th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial with military honors will follow in the Woods Cemetery near Redfield, Kansas.

Obituary of Richard Marshall

Richard Dean Marshall, age 94, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, October 25, 2020, at the Via Christi Medical Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.

He was born November 11, 1925, in West Mineral, Kansas, the son of William Riley Marshall and Theo Anna Sanderson Marshall.

Richard graduated from the West Mineral High School and went on to serve with the United States Army during World War II.

Richard married Marie Hoover on August 27, 1950, at Hannon, Missouri.

Following his service with the Army, Richard began a career in education. He first received his BS Degree from K-State University and then taught school in Girard, Jennings and Blue Mound Kansas. He later received his Masters Degree from Pittsburg State University. Richard went on to serve as principal at Bronaugh, Missouri and later Mound City and Prescott, Kansas.

Following his retirement, Richard worked for a time at the Water Treatment Plant in Ft. Scott. He also enjoyed farming and raising cattle. In earlier years, Richard had served as a club leader for the Northwest Scott 4-H Club. Richard was an active member of the First Southern Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher and lay pastor. He had also helped establish the Ft. Scott chapter of Gideon’s International.

Richard will be lovingly missed by his wife, Marie; two children, Diane (Darrell) Spencer, of Ft. Scott and Marcus Marshall, of Wichita; four grandchildren, Susan (John) West, of Ft. Scott, Derrick (Rebecca) Spencer, of Westchester, California, Darren Spencer, of Ft. Scott and Christine (Charley) Bailes, of Kansas City, Kansas; eight great-grandchildren, Ashleigh (Dale) Brauer, of Girard, Kansas, Marcus (Ashley) Page, of Kansas City, Kansas, Andrew (Sarah) Page, of Kansas City, Missouri, Eric Page, Aaron (Janae) West and Brandon (Darci) West, all of Ft. Scott and Crosby and Rae Marie Bailes of Kansas City, Kansas; and four great-great-grandchildren, Theo, Carter, Ava and Maverick. Also surviving is a sister, Ann Martens, of Olathe, Kansas, a sister-in-law, Retha Gries of North Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Carl, Charles and Ray Marshall and two sisters, Xenia Allen and Virginia Chance.

Rev. Steven Porter and Rev. Marty McCord will conduct a memorial service at 2:30 P.M. Monday, November 2nd at the First Southern Baptist Church.

Private burial will take place prior to the funeral service on Monday at the U. S. National Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the American Legion.

Obituary of Beth Ann Tinsley

Beth Ann Tinsley, age 77, a resident of Bronson, Kansas passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at the Moran Manor Nursing Home in Moran, Kansas.

She was born January 17, 1943, in Moran, the daughter of Francis Bradford Glasgow and Keitha Yelton Glasgow.

She married Paul Everette Tinsley on May 25, 1959, at Lone Elm, Kansas.

In earlier years, Beth worked for Reasoner’s Equipment in Bronson.  She later owned and operated B & P Sport Shop in Bronson and also operated her own dog breeding kennel.

She was a member of the Xenia Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include her husband, Paul, of the home in Bronson and three children, Paula Ann Vincent, of Hiattville, Kansas and Everette Allen Tinsley and James Bradford Tinsley, both of Bronson and four grandchildren, David Paul Vincent, Deanaira Vincent, Dana Vincent and Alex Lee Lukenbill.  Also surviving is a brother, Phillip Glasgow, of Lawrence, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Following cremation, graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 1st at the Bronson Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Obituary of Daniel Hereford

Daniel Dewayne “Dan” Hereford, age 52, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died unexpectedly Thursday, October 22, 2020, in Ft. Scott.

He was born November 24, 1967, in Ft. Scott, the son of Dale and Susan Clayton Hereford. He graduated from Ft. Scott High School. He married Jackie Brown on May 23, 1987, in Ft. Scott.

Dan has been employed by Timken for the past 31 years.

He enjoyed bee keeping, wood working, and gardening. He liked to attend auctions and occasionally bought things.

Dan never met a stranger. He had a great laugh and liked to tell stories, sometimes embellishing a bit. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

Survivors include his wife Jackie of the home; his mother, Susan Porter and husband Larry, a son, Jake Hereford and wife Cindy, Ft. Scott; a daughter, Baylee Crahan and husband Jacob; 3 siblings, Lynna Myer and husband Larry, Lancaster, KS, Troy Landers and wife Becky, Ft. Scott, and Jeff Daly and wife Julie, Ft. Scott; 4 grandchildren, Karlee and Rydale Hereford, and Luke and Abbie Crahan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Hereford.

Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 28th, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Obituary of Oaklyn Kastl

Oaklyn Rae Kastl, daughter of James Michael Kastl, Sr. and Cassandra LeeAnn Wells, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2020.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by siblings, Carlie, Jackson, Ashby Jr., Travis, Jazmine, Jaydynn, Jerzee and Jimmy Jr.

Also surviving are grandparents, Donna Kay Wallace, Dwayne Wells and Rodney and Dottie Pulliam; great-grandmother, Donna Rash and several aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Wayne Rash and Kenneth and Ruth Wells.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 26th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Dexter Clark

Dexter Allen Clark, age 87, a resident of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 19, 2020, at his home.

He was born July 8, 1933, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the son of James H. Clark, Sr. and Alice Anna West Clark.

In earlier years, Dexter worked for the Ft. Scott Tribune first as a paperboy and later in the print room.  He graduated from the Ft. Scott High School and later served with the United States Army during the Korean War.  Following his military service he graduated from Wichita Drafting College.

He married Lucille Williams in 1955.  They later divorced in 1987.  Dexter began a career with Litwin Corp., an oil refining business, where he worked for many years as Senior Design and Draftsman.  When the company relocated to Texas, Dexter took a position with PDF/Texaco in Eldorado, Kansas where he worked until he retired.

Dexter was extremely mechanically minded and used this ability in his hobby of constructing models of all kinds especially cars and airplanes. He also enjoyed ceramics, collecting stamps and coins, gardening and photography.  He was a member of the NRA.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Clark, of the home in Wichita; a grandson, Shannon Colby Urban; four great-grandchildren, Isaac, Tristin, Michala and Jillian and two great-great-grandchildren, Zoe and Benjamin.  Also surviving are a brother, Richard Clark, of Lenexa, his in-laws, Rollin and Betty Swaim and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leon Clark and James H. Clark, Jr.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 23rd at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial with military honors will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery northeast of Ft. Scott.

Obituary of Oaklynn Shadden

Oaklynn Virginia Shadden, age 2 months, died Sunday, October 18, 2020, at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, MO. She was born August 20, 2020, in Nevada, MO, the daughter of Samuel Shadden and Courtney Scheckel.

Survivors include her parents; a brother, Gydeon Hall; a brother/uncle, Zayne Schnichels; grandparents, Harry “Sid” and Dollie Shadden, Fulton, KS, Karon Schnichels (Troy Rhynerson), Ft. Scott, KS, and David C. Schnichels, Nevada, MO; great grandparents Charlotte Lucas and Alvin Ted Miles; aunts Brandi Toomay (Joel), Roxanne Merriman (Jay), Heather Hillis (Cody), and Megan Sherbon (Jared); uncles Steven E. Shadden, David Shadden (Jackie), and Kyle Schnichels (Laryn Thompson); and 18 cousins.

She was preceded in death by great grandparents, Virginia Schnichels, Goldie Schnichels, David W. Schnichels, Lewis Lucas, Faye Dean Lucas, Alice Virginia Ruby-Johnson, Colleen Joles Cowden and Harry H. Shadden.

Rev. Marty DeWitt will conduct graveside services at 10:00 Friday, October 23rd, in the Centerville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Thursday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Clessa Hawkins

Clessa Kay Hawkins, age 56, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away early Saturday, October 17, 2020, at her home.
  She was born November 6, 1963, in Springfield, Missouri, the daughter of Clarence Earl Coulter and Mary Elizabeth Call Coulter.
Clessa married Terry Wayne Hawkins on August 22, 1980, at Ft. Scott.  He preceded her in death on February 8, 2014.
Clessa enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time outdoors and with her grandchildren.  She also liked playing Bingo and taking the occasional trip to the casino.
Survivors include five sons, Jason Hawkins (Kenda), of Newport, Missouri; Terry Hawkins, Jr. (Krystal), Burt Hawkins (Vickie), Clarence Hawkins and John Hawkins (Ryan) all of Ft. Scott, Kansas and sixteen grandchildren, Jackson, Zane, Kendra, Myrissa, Austina, Aleigha, Leroy, Clarence, Jr., Earl, Lindsy, Lyla, Hunter, Teanin, Dustie, Saphera, and Atreya, two great-grandchildren and her beloved dog, Rose.  Also surviving are four brothers, Edward Earl Coulter, of Farlington, Kansas, Leroy Coulter and Randy Jay Coulter, both of Mulberry, Kansas, and Ronnie Lee Coulter, of Ft. Scott and three sisters, Linda Sue Ames, of Ft. Scott, Connie Bea Zumwalt, of Kentucky and Clessa’s twin sister, Tressa Mae McClure of Nashville, Missouri.
  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Hawkins, a brother, Michael Ray Coulter and three sisters, Mary Elaine Wells, Wanda Jean Drake, and Mildred Arlene Cooper.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, October 22nd at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Family and friends may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 1:00 P.M.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Wednesday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
