Obituary of Jerry D. Olson

Jerry Dee Olson, age 82, formerly of Erie, KS, died Monday, June 28, 2021, at his home in York, NE. Jerry was born on January 1, 1939, in Erie, the son of Virgil Olson and Myrtle VanBuskirk.

He moved to York, NE, and started his own business, Olson Roofing, Inc., which he ran for 50+ years until 2021.

Jerry loved listening to country music and was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife Zenaida S. Olson of the home; a brother, Nels Olson; a sister, Neva Redburn; three sons, Erin Dean Olson, Jon-Michael Olson, and Neil Olson; three daughters, Jenny Bohrer, Kaylind Olson, and Mary Ann Olson; six grandsons, Daniel Cage, David Olson, Jared Bohrer, Jeremiah Schneberger, Ryan Dockum, and Trevor Dockum; five granddaughters, Abbra Green, Amber Posey, Breanna Ballard, Kelly Esteves, and Mariah hopper; five great-grandsons, Alias Smitherman, Bennet Ballard, Kyle Olson, Nate Olson, and Owen Green; nine great-granddaughters, Ayle French, Bella Ballard, Brooklyn Olson, Daisy Cage, Emery Green, Kyleah Cage, Madison Esteves, Nico Hopper, and Zibelle Cage; and two great-great grandsons, Elias Wisener, and Sterling Smitherman. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard Olson, and Everett Olson; and a sister, Norma Hall.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 3rd, at the Cheney Witt Chapel, Fort Scott, KS. Burial will follow in the Odense Cemetery, Erie, KS. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Obituary of David E. Ross

David Earl Ross, age 50, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2021, as a result of a motor vehicle accident south of Ft. Scott.

He was born September 15, 1970, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Martin Earl Ross and Kathleen Yevon Rangel Ross.  David graduated from Uniontown High School with the Class of 1989.  He married Retha Lynn Wimberley on December 28, 1991.

In his earlier years, he worked at the family business, M & K Services in Mound City where he worked as a mechanic and powder coater.  He continued working in this line of work the remainder of his life.

He enjoyed restoring and detailing cars and trucks and will be remembered for always having a clean vehicle with shinny tires.  He enjoyed traveling on the backroads and taking the occasional trip to the casino.  He liked to fish and always had a joke or a story to tell.

Survivors include his four children, Tim Ross of Uniontown, Kansas, Matthew Ross, Dylan Ross and Elizabeth Ross, all of Ft. Scott and eight grandchildren, Madilynn, Ryker, Claira, Kathleen, Addison, Bradynn, Jaelynn, and Braxton.  Also surviving are two brothers, John Ross and Danny Ross, both of Mapleton, a sister, Suzie Cliffman of Ft. Scott and his grandmothers, Margie Rangel and Thelma Ross, both of Kansas City, Kansas.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Retha, on July 19, 2018.  He was also preceded in death by his parents and his grandfathers, Leonard Rangel and Noland Ross.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 7th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Dorothy I. Struble

Dorothy Irene Struble, age 87, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at the Medicalodge of Ft. Scott.  She was born April 12, 1934, in Wallingford, Connecticut, the daughter of Joseph J Hubert and Irene Kosa Hubert.

She married Donald Lee Struble on March 5, 1952, at Rockville, Maryland.  Her husband, Don, was serving with the United States Air Force.  During this time, Dorothy and Don made their home in Florida, Virginia and Alaska.  Following retirement, they moved to Mulvane, Kansas for several years and then to Ft. Scott which was Don’s hometown.

Some of Dorothy’s best memories were made on the beach and at the lake in Connecticut.  She enjoyed being outside and taking care of her yard.  She enjoyed having her grandchildren come and spend the week with her where she took them on shopping trips to Wal-Mart and the Salvation Army Thrift Store.  She collected birdhouses and sunflowers.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Rather, of Mulvane, Kansas and her son, Tom Struble, of Panama City Beach, Florida, four grandchildren, Chris (Megan) and their children, Paetyn, Beckett and Graham; Ryan (Jayme) and their children, Westyn and Vivian; Brandon (Angelia) and their children, Caylee and Trenton and Kyle and his children, Ellie and Henrik.  Also surviving are a brother, Conrad Hubert and two sisters, Nancy Hart and Janet Matthews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Don, on May 17, 2005 and two sons, Donnie in 2017 and Ronnie in 2019.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, July 6th at the U. S. Obituary of George W. Danley

George Walter Danley, age 63, resident of Mapleton, KS, died Tuesday, June 29, 2021, as the result of a traffic accident south of Fort Scott, KS.

He was born January 27, 1958, in Fort Scott, the son of Don and Eleanor Wunderly Danley. George worked as a heavy equipment operator all his life. He always had a story to tell. He never met a stranger and never held a grudge. George was funny and easy to love.

Survivors include his wife Elaine of the home; two sons, Raymond and wife Candice, and Josh and wife Katy; a daughter, Rachel and husband Aaron; eight grandchildren, Luke, Kiptyn, Kellyn, Taegan, Jaxon, Koltyn, Korbyn, Karly, and one granddaughter on the way; and many cousins and that were as close as siblings.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 6th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Mapleton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 PM Monday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Deborah Silbaugh

Deborah Lynn Silbaugh, 57, of Buffalo, Kansas and formerly of Fort Scott, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021, at Yates Center Health and Rehab. She was born June 22, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois. She was a Nursing Aide, working primarily in nursing homes.

Deborah is survived by her husband, David Scott McIntosh of the home; her son Timothy Kester, of Rockford, Illinois; three brothers, Randy Silbaugh, of DeKalb, Illinois, Duane Silbaugh, of Flint, Michigan, and Jerry Silbaugh, of New York, New York; an aunt, Bonnie Tyler of Iowa. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pearl May Tyler.

Following cremation, private family services will be held at a later date with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Condolences may be submitted to the online guestbook at konantz-cheney.com.

Obituary of Matthew McClellan

Matthew Todd McClellan, age 38, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, June 26, 2021, at the Via Christi Emergency Room in Ft. Scott.

He was born August 27, 1982, in Ft. Scott, the son of Eugene Arthur McClellan and Juliet Ann Simmons McClellan.  Matt graduated from the Ft. Scott High School with the Class of 2000.  He went on to receive his Associates Degree from Ft. Scott Community College.

He married Starlene Bowden on December 11, 2010, at Ft. Scott.  Matt had been employed by Ward Kraft for sixteen years.  Matt enjoyed golfing and fishing.  He was a hard worker and used his talents to remodel two homes.  Matt and Star had also welcomed several foster children into their home over the last eight years.

He was a member of the Apostolic Pentecostal Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Star and their two daughters, Madelynn and Madyson, all of the home in Ft. Scott

. His mother, Julie McClellan, of Ft. Scott and his brothers and sisters, Josh McClellan (Rechelle), Daren Hutchison (Kristen), Jill Durbin (Jesse), Brenda Pense (Jim), Tricia Heston (Doug), Rick McClellan (Teresa), Chuck McClellan (Tina) and Cheryl McClellan.  Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Brenda Bowden and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Following cremation, Rev. Rod Hillhouse will conduct a celebration of life service at 10:30 A.M. Friday July 2nd at the Apostolic Pentecostal Church.

Obituary of Vana Rash

Vana Lynn Rash, age 59, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Thursday, June 24, 2021, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO. She was born July 20, 1961, in Shreveport, LA, the daughter of Ivan and Norma Barber Bare. She married Glenn Rash on June 2, 1989, in Canyon City, CO. She worked as an RN in the hospital setting during her career. She loved her work, caring for those she met. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend to many. Vana was an avid reader and a devoted member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

Survivors include her husband Glenn of the home; a son, Garret Rash, Ft. Scott; a niece, Brenna; and two nephews, Brandon, and Brent. She was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Sandoval; and her parents.

Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Wednesday morning June 30th, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Obituary of Thelma Thomas

Thelma Opal Thomas, 83, of Fort Scott, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at her home. She was born October 10, 1937, in Boicourt, Kansas, the daughter of Benjamin and Viola (Brant) Wurtz, and was the next to the youngest of twenty-five children. She married Marion Elmer Phillips on September 24, 1958, and he preceded her in death on March 25, 1984. Thelma married Otis Thomas on June 20, 2015, and he survives of the home.

Thelma’s first job was at the Western Insurance. She and Marion started Phillips Insurance Agency in 1961 and retired from there in 1996.

In addition to her husband Otie, Thelma is survived by her children, Diana Cavin (Roger), Brenda Bailey (David), and Randy Phillips (Laura), all of Fort Scott; her sister, Lillie Mae Jackson, Pleasanton, Kansas; six grandchildren, Brent (Danielle) Cavin, Fort Scott, Ashley (Peytonn) Cavin, Pleasanton, Kansas, Austin Bailey and fiancée Valerie, of Holland, Michigan, Breanna (Mitchell) Newman, Fort Scott, Bethany (Kahn) Phillips, Shawnee, Kansas; and Jordan Phillips, Kansas City, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Ginnyfer Cavin, Graham Cavin, and Hagen Newman, all of Fort Scott; and her niece that she was very close to, Carolyn Butler, of Fort Scott, Kansas.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Marion Phillips; ten brothers, Virgil Wurtz, Ray Wurtz, Robert Wurtz, Roscoe Wurtz, Willie Wurtz, Lester Wurtz, Lee Wurtz, Albert Wurtz, Ollie Wurtz, Irvin Wurtz; one sister, Rosella Jane Clemens. She was also preceded in death by three half-brothers, and nine half-sisters.

Rev. Dr. Jared Witt will conduct funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Scott with burial following in Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, June 29, 2021, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Obituary of Linda Lynnette Johnson

Linda Lynette Johnson

Linda Linnett Boyd Johnson, age 72, a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas went peacefully to be with the presence of her Lord on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at her home.  She was born April 17, 1949 in Pittsburg, KS the daughter of “Tutti” and Billy Lee Boyd.  She married the love of her life Robert Johnson on November 20, 1976 in Fort Scott.  They had two children Derrick Wayne and Michael Randell.  Linda loved their many trips to Branson, shopping until she dropped, and just spending time with family. 

 

After graduating with her beautician’s certificate, she spent many years owning and operating her own hair salon in Fort Scott, KS.  She was then employed by Mercy Hospital as a housekeeper, CNA, and CMA at both the Burke St location and when they later moved to Woodland Hills Blvd.  Upon retirement, Linda enjoyed spending time with her two grandsons Randell Matthew and Liam Robert. 

 

Survivors include her two sons Derrick Wayne and Michael Randell and his wife Jana and their two boys Randell and Liam.

  She was preceded in death by her parents, numerous aunts and uncles and cousins, also the love of her life and best friend Robert Johnson but it gives us great comfort to know they are together again today.   

Rev. Rob Carr will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 29th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 prior to the service Tuesday morning.

Obituary of Paul Franklin Carlson

 

Paul Franklin Carlson, 90, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away April 1, 2020. He was born March 1, 1930, at the family home on 705 Clark Street, Fort Scott, Kansas, and was the third of seven children.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur F. and Lorena M. (Ballou) Carlson, sister Mildred L. (Carlson) Askew, brothers Norman R. Carlson, Larry D. Carlson, and daughter Paula Jo (Carlson) Gearity.

He is survived by his best friend and wife Rebecca Peters-Carlson, two granddaughters Christine Gearity and Kathy Gearity, and one great-granddaughter Katarina; brothers Ralph J. (Saundra) Carlson, Donald J. (Mim) Carlson, and Gerald L. (Donna) Carlson, 16 nieces and nephews, and numerous great and great great nieces and nephews.

Paul attended Eugene Ware School, Fort Scott; Gravette Holiness Bible School, Gravette, Arkansas; and graduated from Mt. Zion Bible School, Ava, Missouri, in 1948.

Based in San Diego, California, Paul proudly served his country for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Paul was a lifetime member of the NRA.

In 1959, he moved to Birmingham, Alabama where he remained until the time of his death. Paul received a commendation from the Governor of Alabama for his dedication and good work for 20 years as photographer for the state organization NAMI-Alabama (National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alabama).

Paul joyfully served Christ Jesus as his Savior and Lord for many years. He was an ordained Christian minister, preaching and distributing countless Bibles and other Christian writings to people across the United States.

The service is open to the public.

The family will conduct the memorial service at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 2, 2021, at the Fort Scott National Cemetery with full military honors following.

Obituary of Katherine Proctor-Farr

Katherine Elaine Proctor-Farr, age 66, resident of Nevada, MO, died Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, MO. She was born June 6, 1955, in Wichita, KS, the daughter of David and Lillie Smith Moyer. She married Donnie Proctor on May 1, 1981. He preceded her in death on November 17, 1997. She later married Bill Farr. He preceded her in death in 2017. Kathy enjoyed reading books and watching HGTV. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids.

Survivors include a daughter, Kim Starr and husband John, Billings, MT; a son, Ray Proctor and wife Angie, Nevada, MO; 2 brothers, John Moyer and wife Barb, and Mike Moyer and wife Pat, all of Wichita, KS; 4 sisters-in-law, Sherry Moyer, Wichita, KS, Diana Clark, Ft. Scott, KS, Cindy Proctor, Ft. Scott, KS, and Mary Jane Young, Garland, KS; 4 grandchildren, Andra, Nick, Chandler, and Thor; an aunt, Betty Moyer, Haysville, KS; mother-in-law, Margaret Bolden, Ft. Scott; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends; and special friends, Irvin and Dorinda Durossette.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Moyer; a sister, Linda Moyer; and father-in-law, Don Bolden.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 23rd at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Lath Branch Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Tuesday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
