Obituary of Marie Marshall

Marie Marshall, age 95, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas.  She was born July 9, 1927, in Arcadia, Kansas, the daughter of Oliver Hoover and Laura Perrin Hoover.

At the age of nine, Marie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and faithfully served him in all aspects of her life.

Marie graduated from the Arcadia High School and began her teaching career in rural one-room schools in Crawford County, Kansas. She married Richard Dean Marshall on August 27, 1950. Marie received her BS degree in education from Pittsburg State University and taught in Jennings, Kansas; Bronaugh, Missiouri; Blue Mound, Mound City, and Prescott, Kansas where she primarily taught first and second Grades.  Marie’s teaching career spanned forty years.

Marie was a charter member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Ft. Scott.  She faithfully served by playing the piano and organ, teaching Sunday School, helping with Vacation Bible School and Awana and serving on the missions committee.

Following retirement, Marie joined the Ft. Scott Writers’ Club where she served as an officer.  During that time, she won numerous local and state awards for her poetry and short stories.  Some of her poetry was featured in local newspapers and magazines.

Marie also enjoyed singing in Community College and Community Chorus productions as well as performing with the Sweet Adelines and the 7-Ups.  Marie and Dean loved to travel on many road trips through the United States and were privileged to take trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Europe and Israel.  They were also able to spend a summer in China where they helped teach English with their son, Marcus.

Marie is survived by her two children, Diane Spencer (Darrell) of Ft. Scott and Marcus D. Marshall of Wichita, Ks; four grandchildren, Susan West (John) of Ft. Scott, Derrick Spencer (Rebecca) of Winchester, California, Darren Spencer of Ft. Scott and Christine Bailes (Charley) of Kansas City, Kansas; eight great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Brauer (Dale) of Girard, Kansas, Marcus Page (Ashley) of Ft. Scott, Andrew “A.J.” Page of Kansas City, Kansas, Eric Page of Ft. Scott, Aaron West (Janae) and Brandon West (Annyssa) Ft. Scott, Crosby Marshall Bailes and Rae Marie Bailes of Kansas City, Kansas.  Also surviving are seven great great- grandchildren; Theo, Mavarick Dean, and Macen Brauer; Carter Dean and Ellie Marie Page, Ava Marie West, Kyrii Page, and one on the way.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband of seventy years, Richard Dean Marshall who passed away on October 25, 2020.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Ralph, Eldon, and Harold Hoover and five sisters, Veretta Stump, Velma Morris, Ruth Koester, Ruby Hoover and Retha Gries.

Rev. Joel Crippen will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 4th at the First Southern Baptist Church in Ft. Scott.

Burial will follow in the U .S. National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P. M. Wednesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Russell Hughes

Russell Allen Hughes, age 67, resident of Fort Scott, KS died Saturday, April 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family.  He was born June 3, 1955, in Ottawa, KS, the son of Victor Ross Hughes and Freda Ella Fletcher Hughes.

Russell was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for fishing, hunting, and trapping.  He never knew a stranger characterized by his traditional wave, tipping his hat and his greeting “Howdy.”  He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and his beloved German Shepherd Angus.  He especially enjoyed babysitting his granddaughter Elsie Mae and was able to watch her fish for the first time.

 

Russell was an accomplished athlete in track discus, shot, and javelin.  His passion was wrestling and was a true ambassador for the sport, encouraging and supporting youth interest through coaching and mentoring.  He coached various sports through the Fort Scott Recreation Program and played a key role in the development of love of sports in the youth of the community as well as in his children.  He avidly supported his children’s sport careers in high school and college, traveling to attend their tournaments.  Russell attended Fort Scott Community College and was among the first group of wrestlers to qualify for the National Junior College Wrestling Championship tournament.

 

Russell was part of the creation of the Fort Scott Bass Fishing Club and developed many enduring friendships.  He was a member of the Kansas BASS Federation, placing first in the 1987 Hillsdale Lake tournament obtaining a chance for the BASS Master tournament.  He fished many tournaments during his lifetime and had an innate old school skill set and shared this knowledge with his children and youth of the community.  His motto was “Feed a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.”  He also developed a love of local history and enjoyed searching local fields and secret areas for relics through metal detecting with a keen eye for finding Indian arrowheads with his dear friend Thomas Karleskint.

 

Russell married Deb McBride in 1980.  Though this relationship wasn’t permanent, they had one child, together, Ashley, whom they adored.  He married the love of his life Patricia Anne Repasky in Gunn Park amongst the wild blooming delphinium on May 15, 1993, and would have celebrated 30 years of love and friendship.

 

He took pride in his work performance during the 33 years of employment for the City of Fort Scott Water Treatment Plant and Groundskeeper at Gunn Park.  After retirement, he worked part time as a janitor at the Fort Scott middle School and continued coaching track.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No.8 in Iola and Lodge No. 18 in Ottawa.

 

Survivors include his wife Patricia of the home; a daughter, Ashley Marie Hughes (Jenn Hall), Hutto, TX; 2 sons, Victor Russell Hughes (Bailie), Gardner, KS, and John Ross Hughes (Jada), Overland Park, KS; granddaughter Elsie Mae Hughes; a brother, Randall Hughes, Ottawa, KS; nephews Bob and Colin Hughes, and Anthony Seigrest; and niece Jenny Seigrest.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Pastor Danny Brown will conduct memorial services at 5:00 PM Friday, May 5th, at the Fort Scott Middle School.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening May 4th, from 5:00 until 7:00 at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Robert Daylong

Robert Earl “Bob” Daylong, age 94, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away early Friday, April 28, 2023, at his home.

He was born May 19, 1928, on the family farm north of Moran, Kansas, the son of Sile R. Daylong and Violet L. Hayes Daylong.  At the age of two, the family moved to the Dry Ridge Community where Bob attended the Dry Ridge School.  The family later moved to Bronson, and Bob continued his education there until he enlisted with the United States Army Air Force.

He proudly served his country from 1945 to 1953 where he was stationed in both Germany and Korea.  Following his military service, Bob married Ruth Joan Cochran on November 14, 1954, in Denver, Colorado.

Bob and Joan settled into their home in Ft. Scott.  Bob worked as a mechanic for Ray Shepherd Motors for twelve years.  He later took a position as a heavy equipment operator for P & M Coal Company which later became Chevron.  He worked there for twenty years and retired in 1991.  Bob took great pride in what he did.

Bob enjoyed working in his yard and tinkering in his shop.  He often did mechanic work for his friends and neighbors.  He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Consistory and the Mirza Shrine of Pittsburg as well as the V.F.W. and the United Mine Workers.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Joan, of the home in Ft. Scott, his daughter, Kathy Drenick (Mike) of Pittsburg, Kansas and two granddaughters, Amy Maksimovich (Alex) of Wildwood, Missouri and Kelsey DeGraff (Lucas) of Carl Junction, Missouri and two great-grandchildren, Ayla and Arlo Maksimovich.  Also surviving are a sister, Marie Saville of Lenexa, Kansas, two brothers-in-law, Jerry Cochran (Shelly) and Dale Cochran and numerous special nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James Daylong and an infant sister, Hazel Daylong.

 

Pastor Tim Woodring will conduct funeral services at 11:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 2nd at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial with military honors will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 10:30 A.M. until service time at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Obituary of Annie Lucile Bacon

Annie Lucile “Lucy” Bacon, age 95, a resident of rural Moran, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at the Residential Living Center in Garnett, Kansas.  She was born October 29, 1927, on the family farm in rural Allen County, Kansas, the daughter of William Deer and Nora Cady Deer. Lucy graduated from the Bronson High School with the Class of 1945.  Shortly after graduating, she married Kenneth C. “Joe” Bacon on June 6, 1945, at the Allen County Courthouse in Iola, Kansas.  Joe and Lucy raised their family and worked side by side on their farm north of Moran for many years.  Lucy enjoyed fishing and working in the garden.  In earlier years, the family enjoyed camping trips to Colorado.  Later, Lucy and Joe spent thirteen winters in Texas where they enjoyed getting to know other campers from all over the United States.  Another hobby enjoyed by Lucy and Joe was bowling.  They enjoyed time at the bowling alley with family and friends and also traveling to bowling tournaments.  Lucy was also an accomplished cake decorator and often made birthday and wedding cakes for area friends.  She was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals as well as the KU Jayhawks.  She also made every effort to attend the sporting events of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Lucy enjoyed playing the keyboard and she and Joe often entertained nursing home residents at both Moran and Iola.  She was a longtime member of the Bronson United Methodist Church and a past member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her children, Beverly Fuhrman (Harley) of Bronson, Kansas, Charles “Chuck” Bacon (Cristine) of Moran, Kansas, Doug Bacon (Paula) of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Cindy Mefford (Jason) of Mapleton, Kansas and Jean Davolt (Philip) of Wichita; ten grandchildren, Chris Hanna (Aric), Ken Fuhrman (Sue), Bryan Bacon (Brenda), Jessica Bacon, Travis Bacon (Angie), Tyler Bacon (Haley), Brandon Newman, Jason Newman (Trish), Jeremy Davolt (Victoria), and Stephanie Davolt; thirteen great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.  Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Margaret Fuston.  Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth “Joe” Bacon on October 30, 2014.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Percy and Everett Deer and four sisters, Ruth Bowman, Lorene Ard, Doris Crone and Beula Proyck.

Obituary of Clara Belle Page

Clara Belle Page, age 91, resident of Hiattville, KS died Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at the Horton House, Fort Scott, KS.  She was born October 19, 1931, in Lamar, MO, the daughter of Carl and Hannah Sheets Chaplin.

Clara worked in housekeeping and laundry for three area nursing homes during her career.

She enjoyed babysitting, embroidery, gardening, bass fishing, and crossword and jigsaw puzzles.  She loved spending time with her family, especially during holidays preparing the meals.  Her specialties included homemade noodles and pies.

Survivors include 3 sons, Jerry Lee Page (Leanna), Fort Scott, Carl Joe Page (Vicky), Hiattville, and Gary Ray Page, Hiattville; a sister, Velma Dyche, Pawnee, KS, a daughter in law, Erlinda Page, Fort Scott; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Chris William Page, 4 brothers, Virgil, Carl, Paul and Everett Chaplin, 2 sisters, Florence Barnum, and Mary Killion, and a son, John Page.

 

Pastor Brian Rhoades will conduct funeral services at 2:00 Wednesday, May 3rd, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Hepler Cemetery.

Obituary of George Freeze

George Albert Freeze, age 69, a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas passed away Sunday, April 23, 2023, at his home.  He was born to Fred and Irma Dickey Freeze on October 30, 1953 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

George was a registered respiratory therapist and worked at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, Kansas for forty-seven years.  He loved his job.  The past three years, he worked the switchboard for Via Christi Hospital.

He married the first love of his life, Lucille Page on May 28, 1977.   George and Lucille had one son, Aaron Freeze.  Lucille passed away on February 19, 2006

George later married the second love of his life, Janice Brunner on August 3, 2010, and gained 5 step-children and 15 grandchildren.

He enjoyed playing poker, fishing and watching old TV shows.

He is survived by his wife Janice, son Aaron Freeze, of Ft. Scott, Kansas, 5 step-children and 15 grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brothers, John (Ann) Freeze of Lehi, Utah, Randy (Teresa) Freeze of Liberal, Missouri and sisters, Carol (Mark) Brizendine of Norborne, Missouri, LuAnne (Paul) Crocker of Liberal, Missouri and Linda (Tom) McKay also of Liberal, Missouri, brothers-in-law Larry Page and David Page of Fort Scott, Kansas and sisters-in-law Chris Brown, and Audrey Cole both of Ft. Scott, Kansas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  George was also survived by his beloved cat, Maggie, who was his constant companion.  He wasn’t really a cat person, but loved Maggie.

George was preceded in death by his wife Lucille, parents and grandparents.

George will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Following cremation, Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct a memorial service at 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 28th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Private burial will take place at a later date in the Hiattville Cemetery.

Obituary of Donna Warehime

Donna Lea Jacquinot Warehime, age 91, a resident of Stroud, Oklahoma died Monday, April 17, 2023 at the Stroud Health Care Center. Donna was born August 25, 1931 to Pete and Alta Herron Jacquinot in Greenbush, Kansas. Donna met and married Dorwin R. Hall in 1951 at Fort Scott, Kansas. To this union six children were born. Dorwin preceded her in death in 1979. She later married Donald Greenfeather, he preceded her in death in 1992. She then married Ivan Warehime in 1997, he preceded her in death in 2001. Donna was a wonderful loving wife, mother, sister, granny, nanny, and friend to countless loved ones. During her lifetime Donna sold real estate, owned a very successful business and raised six amazing children, Gary, Debbie, Randy, Robin, Troy, and Roger. Donna loved to dance and have a goodtime, she never met a stranger and loved with all that she was. She lived in many places and had a wanderers heart. At one point she bought and remodeled many houses in Columbus, Kansas. Donna loved to take trips, especially to Las Vegas. She loved her slot machines and went to play whenever she had the chance. Donna was well loved and will be terribly missed in this world, by all that loved her. She has left an enormous void. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Stroud Health Care Center for their love and devotion, and Traditions Hospice for their loving care at the end.

Donna is survived by her children, daughters, Debbie Nash (Dale) Waxahachie, Texas, Robin Cox (Kevin) Collinsville, Oklahoma, sons Randy Hall (Kathleen) Grove, Oklahoma, and Roger Hall (Becky) Bristow, Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren, 3 grand fur babies, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Dorwin Hall, Don Greenfeather, and Ivan Warehime; two sons, Gary and Troy Hall; her parents; two sisters, Margina Harris and Pat Hawkins, and a brother, Peter “Bud” Jacquinot.

Cremation was performed. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 29, 2023, at the Centerville Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kansas. A casual visitation and dinner will proceed following the graveside service at the Carriage House in Fort Scott, Ks located at 301 S. Main. Obituary of Elouise S. Young

Elouise S. Young, born May 20, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, went home to be with the Lord April 1, 2023.

Elouise graduated from North Division High School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Elouise met and married Junior L. Young on the 17th Day of October 1963. Together and with help from their parents, they raised the fearsome foursome, Shirley, (Cookie), Willie, David, and Terri. Four dynamic children who have made positive contributions to the community and raised beautiful families. Elouise and Junior were blessed with a lot of grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

 

In addition to raising her children Elouise entered the workforce. She worked for her father in his dry cleaning business for a period of time. She later became a nurse’s assistant at Milwaukee County Mental Health Hospital, where she would retire after 30 years of what she considered to be a much needed service to her community.

Upon retirement, Elouise focused on surrounding herself with her family and friends. She and her husband (Junior), moved back to Ft. Scott, Kansas. Later Elouise would move to Pittsburg, Kansas and later to Dover, Delaware.

She enjoyed traveling. She loved spending time with her road buddy Myrtle (Myrt) before Myrt moved to California. Later, Elouise would travel up and down the Kansas highways with Louise. Driving was her favorite source of transportation. Give her a cup of ice and a full tank and she would drive until she reached her destination. She would travel from Kansas to Wisconsin to spend time with family and friends and on to Texas to be with family and later to Delaware (where she finally retired those car keys).

Elouise especially loved attending and serving in her church United Missionary Baptist Church. She served her community, picking up food from the food pantry with her friend and delivering to those in need. Elouise served on several community boards. She was a strong woman with a strong will to live. She endured hardness as a good soldier. Elouise fought the good fight of faith and has finished the race and kept the faith.

Elouise lived life to the fullest extent. She left earth on an empty tank. Elouise poured out all she had. She left with no regrets. Her relationship with the LORD Jesus Christ was sealed and she was prepared and ready to go. Leaving peacefully in her sleep after hearing the loving voices of family and friends on the phone, just hours before leaving the earth.

Elouise was preceded in death by her husband Junior L. Young, her father and mother Dwight and Virginia Ayers; sister Rose, son, David, brothers; Peach, Ronnie and Dennis.

Elouise was a mom, grandmother, “grannie”, auntie, sister and friend. She loved her family dearly. Nothing gave her greater joy than to spend time with her family, eat chinese food, and laugh.

Elouise leaves behind daughter, Shirley (Cookie), one son Willie (Beth), daughter Terri; grandchildren; Larry (Caronda), Willie, Tami’ca, Brandin, Quincy, Eleana and Dalisa, great grandchildren; Deriyel, Lazzarus, Larriontae, Omunique, La’Zerious, Zavion, Za’Laya, Quincy Jr, Cameron, Mikyla, Princess, Israel, Braylie, Nikkita, Yaylan, Isabella; great-great grandchildren;

Nia’Loni, Harlym, Mila, Ka’leyan ; brother Delbert Ayers; two special ladies in her life Myrtle Anne Colum and Louise Nelson.

Obituary of Hazel Dickerson

Hazel Maxine Dickerson, age 92, resident of Bronson, KS, died Friday, April 21, 2023, at St. Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit, MO.  She was born June 14, 1930, in Fort Scott, KS the daughter of Ray Fred Stewart and Nellie Hazel Robinson Stewart.  She attended South Fairview elementary school and graduated from Moran, KS high school in 1948.  She lived in Kansas City and attended business school.  Maxine married Marvin Gene Dickerson on December 31, 1950, in Bronson.  After Gene’s service in the Army in Alaska, they resided near Anchorage for 19 years homesteading their land and building their home.  Maxine was employed at Elmendorf Air Force Base for several years before staying home full time to provide foster care for 3 native Eskimo children.  In 1969, Maxine and Gene, along with their son Joe, moved back to Kansas to the family farm north of Bronson.  They farmed and had a hog farrowing operation until retirement.  Maxine loved being outdoors and working on the farm with Gene.  Their recreation was the bowling league team for several years and traveling to participate in tournaments throughout the U.S. Maxine was very community minded and was involved in local clubs and committees.  She served on the Bronson Library Board for several years.  She was a member of the Bronson Ruritan and Bronson Methodist Church.  She was chosen as a co-grand Marshal in 2017 to lead the Bronson Day Parade in a convertible car.  Maxine enjoyed her cats, making quilts, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid reader.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

 

Survivors include her son Joe Dickerson and wife Paula, Bronson, KS; a brother, Buford Stewart and wife Bea, Bronson, KS; a sister, Vera Scifers and husband Reid, Fort Scott, KS; grandson, Tristan Dickerson; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband Gene, and granddaughter Jordan Bailey Dickerson.

 

There was cremation.  Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 2nd, at the Bronson United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow in the U. S. Death Notice of Jon Farrell

Jon L. Farrell, 57, resident of Fort Scott, passed away Thursday evening, April 13, 2023, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center as a result of multiple medical complications.

 

Following cremation, the family will hold private services at a later date. Obituary of Timothy Stuart

 

Timothy Duane Stuart, age 62, a resident of rural Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Monday, April 17, 2023, at his home.  He was born March 12, 1961, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Verlin Wayne Stuart and Katherine Regina Diibon Stuart.  Tim first married Connie Powell on November 6, 1980.  Together they had a son, Scott.  They were later divorced.  In 1988, Tim was united in marriage to Sandra M. Gale and to this union were born four children, Heather, Michael, Timothy and Amber.  Prior to becoming disabled, Tim worked as a welder.  Favorite times were spent camping and fishing with family and friends.  In earlier years, Tim attended the Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Ft. Scott.

 

Survivors include his children, Scott Stuart, Heather Stuart, Michael Ray Vincent Stuart, Timothy Duane Stuart, Amber Hatfield and Nathaniel Stuart.  Also surviving are a sister, Michelle Sharp and nieces and nephews, Gregory, Joshua, Justin and Tyler Sharp, Brent Brown and Jennifer Stafford as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Denise Ivison.

 

There was cremation.  A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas.  Arrangements were under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Ft. Scott, Kansas.  Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.
