Obituary Of Helen Dold Niemier

Helen Dold Niemeir, age 95, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, made her way home to heaven on Sunday, February 25, 2018.  She was born March 3, 1922, in Sheldon, Missouri, the daughter of Jules Keith Sawyer and Josephine Welker Sawyer.  Helen grew up in Parsons, Kansas and attended schools there graduating from Parsons High School with the Class of 1940.  She then completed a course of study at Labette Community College. 
In April of 1943, she married Howard H. Dold at a church in Dennis, Kansas, prior to his deployment to Europe with the US Army Combat Engineers.  While living in Lawrence, Kansas, after the war where Howard attended pharmacy school, a son was born to this union, Gaylord L. Dold.  Wichita then became home for nearly thirty years.  Howard died in May of 1975. 
In 1980, Helen was introduced by a friend to her friend’s brother, Glen Niemeir, who had also lost his spouse.  Glen and Helen hit it off and were married on June 1, 1980, at which time Helen retired from her position with Santa Fe Trail Transport in Wichita and moved with her groom to his farm on the Kansas/Missouri state line northeast of Ft. Scott.  Helen was a long-time member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star (first in Fulton and then Ft. Scott). 
She loved to travel with her husband, Glen and their family in their Airstream travel trailer with the Wally Bryam Caravan Club throughout the US and Canada, traveling over the years to many of the lower forty-eight states and also Alaska. 
Helen is survived by her step-children; Glenda Lalman (Bill), Carol Ruble (Dan), Doug Niemeir (Diana), all of Ft. Scott and Gilbert Niemeir (Linda), of Camden, Arkansas.  She is also survived by ten step-grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, her husband Howard Dold in 1975, her husband, Glen Niemeir in 2010 and her son, Gaylord in January of 2018. 
Pastor Tom Mullins and Rhonda Headley will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 2 at the Cheney Witt Chapel.  Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. 
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Obituary of Joe Dean Hull

Joe Dean Hull, age 73, a resident of Ft. Scott, died Saturday, February 24, 2018, at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born on October 5, 1944, in Ft. Scott, KS, the son of James Isaac Hull and Ruby Terrill Hull.

He married Myrtle Gaston on June 15, 1965, in Nevada, MO.

In his younger years he worked for Lawson’s Radiator and Judy’s Iron and Metal in Belltown, then a short time with Bruce Marble and Granite. He then began his career with Peerless Products, retiring after 47 years. He also owned and operated Joe’s Storm Door and Window for several years. Joe enjoyed raising cattle, each with their own name, and going to the sale barn.

He liked to hunt, fish, and camp, purchasing a camper recently. He bowled, and roller skated quite well. He loved spending time with his family. He taught each of the grandsons how to roller skate, much to their amazement. He found time to get one-on-one with each grandchild, teaching life lessons along the way.

Joe was a friend who never met a stranger. He was associated with the Lighthouse Tabernacle, Pittsburg, KS.

Survivors include his wife Myrtle of the home; a son Joe Hull, Jr. and wife Lisa, St. Louis, MO; a daughter, Debbie Moyer and husband Doug, Nevada, MO; five brothers, Robert Hull and wife Violet, Charles Hull and wife Leta, Earl Hull, Harold Hull and wife Naomi, and Leland Hull and wife Barbara, all of Ft. Scott; a sister, Beulah Adkins and husband Bob, Independence, MO; seven grandchildren, Joey and Beth, Joshua and wife Heather, Jacob and Kelley, Seth, Aaron and Jennifer, Curtis and Emily, and Berkley; five bonus grandchildren, Jordan and Dillon, Mikelah and Tristan, Charli, Tara and husband Nathan, and Chad and wife Tiffany; seven great grandchildren, Zoey, Carlee, Bentley, Carson, Curtis, Raylan, Violet Joe, and Kai on the way; eight bonus great grandchildren, Deklyn, Kaelin, Kinley, Bayler, Brooklyn, Chase, Brooklynn, and Ketrick; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Hull and Liz Mills; and his parents.

Pastor Daryl Gaddy will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Thursday, March 1, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Obituary Of Madge Marie Cox

Madge Carrie Cox, age 70, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 23, 2018, at the Mercy Hospital in Ft. Scott. 
She was born February 6, 1948, in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Bill DeCoudres and Ruby Thompson DeCoudres.  Madge graduated from the Ft. Scott High School with the Class of 1966.  She married Douglas Cox on June 17, 1967, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Ft. Scott. 
She had been employed by Comstock Lumber Company until it closed.  She later began working for Ft. Scott Lumber Company from the time the company started until the time of her death.  She had been active with women’s ministries at the church and enjoyed organizing and decorating for parties and special events. 
Survivors include her husband, Doug, of the home; a son, Travis Cox and wife, Alisha, of Tahoma, Wisconsin; a daughter, Rachel French and husband, Daniel, of Ft. Scott; a daughter-in-law, Beth Cox of Independence, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, Rebekah LaBlu and husband, Richard, Micha, Miriam, Ruth, Esther Sarah, Adina, Mariah Cox, Jason Cox and Grace and Sophia French; and two great-grandsons, Brian and Andrew LaBlu.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Brad Cox.
Private funeral services will be held Monday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to Care to Share and may be left in the care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Obituary Of Gerald “Nate” Beaman

Gerald O. “Nate” Beaman, 93, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at A Country Place Senior Living in Fort Scott.

He was born August 7, 1924, in Uniontown, Kansas, the son of Ray and Ruth (Turner) Beaman. He married Mary Kathryn “Kay” Henson on January 11, 1947, in Fort Scott, Kansas, while attending Fort Scott Junior College, and they recently celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary, January of 2018.

Nate was a Hall of Fame Athlete, both at Fort Scott Junior College and Pittsburg State University, and he played semi-pro baseball as a catcher and outfielder after serving in the US Navy, a WWII Veteran. He was a coach, math teacher, and High School Principal for thirty years in Imperial Valley, California. When he retired, he and Kay moved back to the farm where he was born in Uniontown, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife Kay; four children, Jan Beaman, Curt Beaman, both of Uniontown, Kansas, Michael Beaman of Riverside, California, and Ty Beaman, of San Diego, California; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ina Nicolini, Ethel Olsen, Lula Shull; and two brothers, Harold Beaman, and Curtis Beaman.

Rev. Connie McKee will conduct graveside services, 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 26, 2018, at the Uniontown Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon February 25, 2018, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Obituary Of Sue Ann Cannon

Sue Ann Cannon, age 65, a former resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, and more recently of Edwardsville, Kansas, passed away early Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. 
She was born July 6, 1952, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Delbert Lowell Smith and Cathern Armatha Ward Smith.  Sue graduated from the Ft. Scott High School with the Class of 1970. 
She married Charles Melvin Harper and they later divorced. 
She later married Carlos Cannon on February 20, 1999. 
While living in Ft. Scott, Sue worked at Key Work Clothes, Master Printers and later for Ward-Kraft.  After moving to Edwardsville, she was employed by Midwest Bus Sales. 
She was a member of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary of Ozawkie, Kansas. 
She enjoyed quilting and spending quality time with her family.  She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. 
 
Survivors include her husband, Carlos, of the home; her daughter, Tammy Phillips (Kenny); two grandchildren, Kennda Major (Curtis) and Timmy Phillips (Jami Morgan) and a great-granddaughter, Kenzi Phillips, all of Ft. Scott.  Also surviving are a brother, Raymond Smith (Tawnja), of Ft. Scott and a sister, Janet Kovacic (Ernie) of Stark, Kansas.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Smith. 
 
Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday, February 24 at the Cheney Witt Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Centerville Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Obituary Of Michael Owen True

Michael Owen True, age 71, a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, died late Friday, February 16, 2018, following a heart ailment.

He was born December 11, 1946, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Warren D. True and Lucille Leach True. He married Joyce Haller on June 15, 1968, in Shawnee, Kansas.

Mike was retired as trainmaster with the Burlington Northern Railroad. He served in the United States Marines from 1966 to 1969. He was an active member of the MG Club and owns two MG cars. He also loved target shooting and was a member of the Bourbon County Sharpshooters. Other hobbies include fishing and remote-control airplanes.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce, of the home; one son, Steve True and wife Victoria of Ottawa, Kansas; one daughter, Julie True of Topeka; two brothers, Dave True and wife Beverly, Shawnee, Kansas, and Brad True and wife, Mary, Olathe, Kansas. Also surviving are four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Scott True.

Following cremation, the family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until noon, Wednesday in the Cheney Witt Chapel.

The celebration of life and memorial service will be announced at a later date to be held at his favorite fishing location. Mary Elizabeth Stoughton, age 95, a resident of Ft. Scott, KS, formerly of rural Mapleton, KS, died Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Country Place Living in Ft. Scott. She was born January 16, 1923, in rural Bourbon County, the daughter of Nixon and Eula Hutcherson Blair. She married Ellis Stoughton. He preceded her in death on November 24, 2011. Mary worked for the Postal Service in Mapleton, Redfield, and the Devon office until it’s closing. She then transferred to Ft. Scott until her retirement. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, bowling tours, fishing, crafts, and antique auctions. She played the organ at church for many years, lastly the Mapleton Methodist Church. She was a member of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen Sue Peery and husband Ed, Mapleton, KS; grandchildren Kristian Fowler and husband Sid with sons Wyatt Ellis Fowler and Jesse Lee Fowler, Olathe, KS; Andy Peery, Grove, OK, and children Ian Peery and wife Brandee with son Barrett, Mapleton, and Andrea Peery, Joplin, MO, Susan Bancroft and husband Adam with children Bailie Elisabeth Brown, Gunnar Joe Brown, Allie Nacole Brown and Kynleah Claire Bancroft, Ft. Scott, Matt Martin, Ft. Scott, Troy Stoughton and children Laura Wray, Pittsburg, KS, and Sabra Stoughton, Ft. Scott, Drew Stoughton, Mapleton, Amy Stoughton and daughter Jandyn Stoughton, Ft. Scott, and Christina Logue and husband Jason with children Brayden and Emma of Ohio. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Wilma Kendrick Slick and Betty Nethercot; five brothers James, Marion, John, Robert, and Warren Blair; and a son, James Raymond Stoughton.

Pastor Joe Perkins will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 20th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the West Plains Cemetery, Ft. Scott. Obituary Of Sandra Sue “Sandy” Rylander

Sandra Sue “Sandy” Rylander, 75, passed away Wednesday afternoon, February 14, 2018, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She was born October 16, 1942, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of John C. and Nettie Caroline (Townsend) Stanbro.

She married Gary Rylander June 4, 1961, in Fort Scott, and he survives of the home.

Sandy graduated from Uniontown High School with the class of 1960. She was a member of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church and the Old Fort Genealogy Society.

In addition to her husband Gary, Sandy is also survived by her daughters, Susan Hedge, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Cheryl Huffman of Darien, Connecticut; a sister, Martha Murrow of Jupiter, Florida; and six grandchildren, Isabelle, Emily, Benjamin, Andrew, Nick, and Jane. She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant daughter, Kelli Sue Rylander.

Following cremation, memorial services for Sandy will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with interment following at the Deerfield Cemetery. Obituary for Lois Wanda Moseley

Lois Wanda Moseley, age 85, a resident of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Monday, February 12, 2018, at the Family Health and Rehab in Wichita, Kansas.

She was born on March 29, 1932, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma the daughter of Jessie and Lillie Jose Pulliam. She married Darol Moseley on December 19, 1950, in Girard, Kansas.

He preceded her in death on August 25, 2016. Lois was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and the Ladies Oriental Shrine.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Moseley and wife, Bobbie, of Rogers, Arkansas, Patrick Moseley and wife, Marilyn, of Goddard, Kansas, and Joseph Moseley, of Wichita, Kansas; a sister, Ruth Braack; nine grandchildren, Michael Moseley, Mark Moseley, Jeremy Moseley, Steven Moseley, Patricia Moseley, Brian Moseley, Nicholas Moseley, Kurt Cox, and Trisha Taylor; and numerous great-grandchildren. Lois was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Calvin Pulliam and Franklin Pulliam; and two sisters, Maudie Robertson and Dorothy Adams.


Graveside services will be held at 11:30 AM Saturday, February 17, 2018, at the Hiattville Cemetery under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Fort Scott Design Review Board Will Meet Feb. 15

The Design Review Board will meet on Thursday, February 15th, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at the City Hall Commission Meeting room at 123 S. Main Street, Fort Scott, Kansas. This meeting will be held to discuss a Certificate of Appropriateness for the installation of bicycle racks in the downtown area, discussion of fencing in the downtown area, and review of the Gordon Parks sign on the Iron Star Building. This meeting is open to the public.

Obituary Of Helen Clark Rhodes Sexton

Helen B. Clark Rhodes Sexton, a former resident of Pittsburg, Kansas and more recently of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 9, 2018, at the Guest Home Estates in Ft. Scott. 
She was born January 28, 1925, the daughter of Edward D. Clark and Dora Anna Whiteside Clark, at Moundville, in Vernon County, Missouri.  She moved with her parents to Kansas in 1941.
  Mrs. Sexton worked at Key Work Clothes in Ft. Scott for ten years.  In 1958, she completed a course in cosmetology and owned and operated her own salon on South Main Street in Ft. Scott for thirteen years.  She closed her salon and went to work at Day and Zimmerman, KAAP, at Parsons, Kansas, as an explosive operator, and in quality control.  She was a graduate of the Medical Self Help Training Class at the plant. 
Her hobbies covered a large territory.  She loved sewing, arts, and craft shows, and making homemade candies, cookies, and cakes for her family and friends during the holidays.  She kept several scrapbooks and family picture albums from when she was in her teens.  In 1997, she wrote and had published, The Ninth of Twelve from the Usta Place, the story of her life.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ft. Scott.
  In 1945, she was united in marriage to Hubert A. Rhodes at the old First Christian Church in Ft. Scott by the Rev. Wilbert Dunlap.  To this union, two children were born. 
On May 17, 1970, she was married to Harley Sexton.
Survivors include her children, Gary Allen Rhodes (Carolyn Butler), of Ft. Scott and Sherri Rhodes Stenseng (Russell), of Eldorado, Kansas; three grandchildren, Trenton Rhodes (Summer), of Ft. Scott, Rusty Stenseng, of Eldorado, Kansas and Kristi Evans (Blake), of Wichita, Kansas and four great-grandchildren, Nova and Easton Rhodes, Logan Stenseng and Isabel Roark and numerous nieces, nephews. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley, a grandson, Marcus Rhodes, three brothers and eight sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 14 at the Cheney Witt Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Obituary Of Shirley Mae Soto

Shirley Mae Soto, age 79, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

She was born December 30, 1938, in California, the daughter of Lee Wurtz and Pauline Sharp Wurtz. Shirley married Paul Soto. Shirley lived the majority of her life in California where she worked in a poultry plant and later as an inspector for the U. S. D. A.

Following her retirement, she moved to Ft. Scott. She then provided care for elderly. She enjoyed her cats.

Survivors include her two children, James Bentley of Ft. Scott and Paula McClurg (David) of Fresno, California; and two step-children, Paul Soto and Cindy Soto, both of California; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Jerry Wurtz, of Oklahoma. Her husband, Paul, preceded her in death on March 11, 2017.

Family and friends may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 13 before going to the West Liberty Cemetery for burial. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Ft. Scott, Kansas.
