Obituary of Norma Jean Jackson

Norma Jean Jackson, 90, of Fort Scott, Kansas, passed away early morning on September 27, 2020.

She was born March 9, 1930, in Redfield, Kansas, the daughter of Willard L. and Bertha Mae (Delzell) Smith. She married John Lyle Jackson November 25, 1950, in Bronson, Kansas.

John and Jean were married for 68 years. John survives Jean at their home in Fort Scott. They had three children who also survive her: Dan and his wife Jeannie of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and three grandchildren April, Zeb, and Danielle and with six great-grandchildren, Carley, Justin, Nayeli, Brady, Everly, Larkin, and Boone, and great-great-grandson Jaxxen; Rick and his wife Denise of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and one granddaughter Janett with two grandsons, Colin and Foster; and Diana and her husband Vincent Myers of Overland Park, Kansas, and three grandchildren, Rachel, Evan, Skyler and two grandsons Keith and Kassius and grand-dog Bubba John.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and their wives: Dwight and Faith, Delbert and Berniece, John and Dot, Bob and Hazel (all Smith’s) and two sisters and their husbands: Rosalie and Ben Banta and Clarabelle (Sue) and Richard Garrison.

Jean graduated from Moran High School in 1949. She was a secretary for Merle Humphrey Insurance for over 30 years. She also volunteered for the Mainstreet Program for over 30 years. Jean was blessed with lots of other family and friends that are too numerous to mention here, but she knew every one of them and loved and cared for them all.

She will be greatly missed by everyone she came into contact with in her 90 years. She was a truly beautiful soul.

Following cremation, Chaplain Lloyd Houk will conduct graveside services at the Fort Scott National Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

The service will only be attended by the immediate family due to COVID -19 and family restrictions.

Obituary of Marjorie Stephan

Marjorie J. Stephan, age 91, resident of Pittsburg, KS, died Sunday, October 4, 2020, at Comfort Care Home of Pittsburg.

She was born October 12, 1928, in Peetz, CO, the daughter of Hans and Anna Westphalen Struve. She graduated high school in Sidney, NE. Marjorie then attended beauty school in Denver, CO. She met her husband Jack Stephan in California. They were married on August 21, 1955, in Peetz, CO.

They then moved back to the family farm near Redfield, KS. They later purchased the Stephan farm west of Ft. Scott, KS.

Marjorie moved to the Highrise in Ft. Scott following Jack’s passing. She lived there until August of 2019, when she moved to Pittsburg.

Marjorie enjoyed caring for a large garden and playing cards. She was a wonderful cook, specializing in cakes, cookies, pies, potato salad, and chicken and noodles. She was a wise woman who was highly organized. She loved her Church and Church family at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her children, Tim Stephan and wife Rebecca, Ft. Scott; Sharon Stewart and husband Jim, Ft. Scott; Dennis Stephan and wife Leesa, Ft. Scott; Mark Stephan and wife Diana, Wamego, KS, and Allisan Strasburg and husband Curtis, Fredonia, KS; a sister, Delores Steinbrecher, Scottsbluff, NE; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

Besides her husband Jack, she was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Arthur and Harold Struve; 2 sisters, Geraldine Barber and Arlene Adams; and a granddaughter, Shanna Stephan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, October 8th, at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Private family burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until service time at the church. Obituary of Juanita Lloyd

Juanita Mae Lloyd

Juanita Mae Lloyd, age 96, a resident of rural Nevada, Missouri, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2020, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 9, 1924, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the daughter of Roy C. Jewell and Bessie Mae Bybee Jewell. She married Emmett Paul Lloyd on September 17, 1945, at Kansas City, Missouri. Together the Lloyds pastored Nazarene churches in Split Log, Missouri, Maryville, Missouri Elk City, Kansas, Marshall, Missouri, Kirkwood, Missouri, Appleton, Wisconsin and Springfield and Warsaw, Missouri.

Juanita was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano. She was an exceptional hostess and enjoyed opening her home to family and friends. In addition to assisting with the ministry, Juanita also worked some outside the home. While in Marshall, Missouri, she worked at Schneider’s Gift Shop and while in Kirkwood she was employed by Lee Creative Research. Later she operated Lloyd Hearing Aid Service in Warsaw, Missouri. Currently, she was a member of the Ft. Scott Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her two daughters, Cheryl Barnett, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Dianna Knisel and husband, Mike, of Denton, Texas; five grandchildren, Jim Ragsdale and wife, Jennifer, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Todd Hall and wife Sabrina, of Denton, Texas, Kimberlee Goins and husband, Paul, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Teri Wright and husband, Josh, of Denton, Texas and Angela Pullen and husband, Greg, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Jacob Ragsdale, Brooke Ashlee Goins, Emily, Avery, Brady, Grayson and Ainsley Pullen, Alexandria and Anberlin Wright, Alexa and Anjolie Hall, Summer Munchin and Tim Goins and a great-great-granddaughter, Aila Goins. Also surviving is a sister, Irene Lowry, of Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett, on December 2, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, William C. Jewell.

Rev. Virgil Peck will conduct graveside services at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 6th at the Evergreen Cemetery.

Obituary of Richard Cowen

Richard “Wayne” Cowen, 70, of Fort Scott, Kansas passed away Thursday afternoon October 1, 2020, at Country Place Memory Care Center. He was born July 18, 1950, in Fort Scott, the son of Glenn Richard and Freda Elaine (Bentley) Cowen.

He married Beverly Jean Ballou on March 13, 1993, in Fort Scott, and she survives of the home.

Wayne attended Bunker Hill Country School and graduated from Fort Scott High School with the Class of 1968. He went on to graduate from Fort Scott Community College, followed by K-State.

Wayne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and an active choir member as well as serving on the Board of Deacons and an Elder in Session.

He worked for Ward Kraft and Ennis Business Forms as a Printing Supervisor.

Wayne was a member of the 6th Kansas Cavalry Dragoon Unit, participating in Civil War re-enactments, and a volunteer at the Fort Scott National Historic Site.

He was active in the Northwest Scott 4-H.

He enjoyed woodworking, square dancing, and family get-togethers and holiday meals, and playing games.

He loved spending time with family and loved going to his grandkids’ sporting events.

Wayne had a sweet tooth, especially for ice cream and cookies, and had the nickname “Cookie Monster.”

In addition to his wife Beverly, Wayne is also survived by his children, Tisha Moore and husband Kevin of Blue Springs, Missouri; Nikia Harlan and husband Jeremy of Katy, Texas; Marissa Cowen of Higginsville, Missouri; Lacey Ratliff and husband Josh, also of Higginsville, Missouri; Simon Ballou and wife Jennifer of Fort Scott; Debbie Ballou of Fulton, Kansas, and Jason Ballou and wife Carol of Fort Scott; three brothers, Kenton Cowen, Brad Cowen and wife Joyce, Larry Cowen and wife Sondra, all of Fort Scott; eighteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rev. Dr. Jared Witt will conduct graveside services at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 2020, at Memory Gardens of Bourbon County, under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Obituary of Catherine Shackelford

Catherine Shackelford, 95, of Fort Scott, passed away Monday morning September 28, 2020, at Via Christi Ascension in Pittsburg, Kansas.

She was born August 24, 1925, in Enid, Oklahoma, the daughter of John and Dora C. (Goeller) Ivan.

She married Robert Everett Shackelford in Colton, California and he preceded her in death August 29, 2001.

Catherine and her husband Robert owned and operated restaurants in California where they lived for a number of years. She was a member of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Catherine is survived by her children, Gaylord Oberst and wife Deb, of Fort Scott, Glenn Oberst, also of Fort Scott, Carol Arner of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Rose Workman and husband Scott, of Lawrence, Kansas; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Robert, Catherine was also preceded in death by her parents, and all of her siblings, having been the last surviving member of her family.

Father Yancey Burgess will officiate graveside services at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2020, at the Fort Scott National Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Memorial For Elmer Junior Judy

Elmer Junior Judy, age 90, a resident of rural Ft. Scott, Kansas, peacefully went to be with Jesus Friday, April 3, 2020, at his home.

A memorial for Elmer Judy will be October 10 at  2 p.m. at the Parkway Church of God, 1111 State Street in Fort Scott.

He was born March 9, 1930, at the family’s rock house southwest of Ft. Scott, the son of Elmer Lewis Judy and Eliza Elizabeth Sanders Judy.  Elmer graduated from the Ft. Scott High School.  He married Lee Ella Gates on April 15, 1949, at Ft. Scott.  In earlier years, Elmer worked at a variety of jobs, but for the majority of his life, he owned and operated Judy’s Iron and Metal in Ft. Scott.  Elmer remained active with his business until three weeks prior to his death.  He was a lover of God, his family, his church, Christian education, missions and good hard work.  Even though he had great influence, he remained humble.  Elmer had an enthusiasm and optimism for everything he did.  He faithfully attended the Parkway Church of God (Holiness).  He served for many years on the Parkway Church Board, the Ft. Scott Christian Heights School Board and the Iron Quill Board of Directors he was also a board member for Haiti Missions.

Survivors include his son, Mike Judy and wife, Carma, of Omaha, Arkansas and his two daughters, Gwen Chance and husband, Terry and Jan Beltram and husband, Larry, all of Ft. Scott and four grandchildren, Brent Chance and wife, Angela, of Harrisonville, Missouri, Brandon Beltram and wife, Amber, of Wichita, Kansas, Lynden Judy and wife, Katie, of Omaha, Arkansas and Kristi Harbit and husband, Justin, of Ft. Scott, Kansas and ten great-grandchildren, Alec, Nate, Kole and Alena Chance, Mikah and Emma Beltram and Tally, Claire, Jhett and Jessa Judy.  Also surviving is his brother, Richard Judy, of Emmett, Idaho.  Elmer’s wife, Lee Ella, preceded him in death on March 8, 2018.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Les Judy, a grandson, Dustin Chance, a brother, Clarence Judy and a sister, Marie Peterson.

Private burial took place in the Evergreen Cemetery at Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Obituary of Mary Ann Worthington Klenklen

Mary Ann Worthington Klenklen, age 86, resident of Springfield, MO, passed away peacefully at Springfield Mercy Hospital on Friday, September 25, 2020.

Mary Ann was born June 21, 1934, to Fred and Alice Sager in Frederick, KS. When she was young, the family moved to Moran, KS, where she grew up and attended schools there graduating from Moran High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Bill Worthington, on November 23, 1952, at the Bronson Baptist Church, where they were very active.

She enjoyed her family, loved to watch the Royals and Chiefs, and enjoyed playing cards with her friends at the Gardens Independent Living Center, where she spent the last eight years.

Besides raising three children and always being present at all their activities, she was employed by Western Insurance, Klein Tools, Ward/Kraft, and Pittsburg Yamaha, where she worked for her son, Dewayne.

After the loss of her husband, Bill, she married Charles Klenklen in 1991. They enjoyed a lot of traveling together. Charles preceded her in death in May 2011.

She was also preceded in death by both parents, her sisters, Maxine and Imogene, her brothers, Don and Marvin.

She is survived by her sister, June Terrell of Moran, KS, her son, Dwight Worthington (Marita) of Pocatello, ID, a daughter, Charlotte Shireman (Greg) of Springfield MO, and son, Dewayne Worthington of Arma KS, grandchildren: Andrew Shireman, Stephen Shireman (Hannah), Tyler and Casey Worthington, and one greatgrandchild, Charlotte Ann (Charlie) Shireman.

Because of COVID 19, private services will be held. Donna Lea Hall

Donna Lea Hall, age 78, resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at her home while surrounded by her family.

She was born on October 4, 1941, in Redfield, Kansas, to Edwin Elmer Christy and Edith Alice Hartman Christy.

She married the love of her life, Clete Hall on January 13, 1962, in Miami, Oklahoma. It is alleged by him that they met when she honked at him while driving around town. Donna was an avid KU Jayhawks basketball fan and her family delighted in watching her cheer them on by yelling at the television. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s athletic games and school events. She had a very close bond with each of her grandchildren and will be greatly missed.

Donna is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Clete Hall, a son, Brian Hall and wife Joyce, Fort Scott, Kansas, a daughter, Stacy Carpenter and husband Doug, Bryan, Texas, a daughter, Cheryl Gallagher and partner Jason Locke, Spring Hill, Kansas, 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Beatrice Christy, a sister, Carol Christy and a brother, Edwin (Junior) Christy.

Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct memorial services at 10:00 AM Friday, October 2nd, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle. Family committal will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle from 9:00 AM until service time on Friday morning.

Obituary of Jess Fletcher III

Jess Francis Fletcher III, age 46, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Monday, September 21, 2020, at his home.

He was born April 29, 1974, in Lawrence, KS, the son of Jess Francis Fletcher II and Suzanne Marie Garfield Fletcher.

He married Kim Bailey on March 10, 1997, in Ft. Scott.

Jess worked a handful of jobs in his lifetime including Packer Plastics Plant, grocery store, and Taco Tico where he would wear the taco costume for local parades and handing candy to kids. He later worked at Carlisle and most recently for Ward Kraft. Jess had a strong work ethic, making sure he provided for his family.

Jess enjoyed fishing, mobile games, and grilling. He really liked beef jerky, often receiving it for Christmas and birthday gifts. He had a quick wit and funny response.

Great importance was placed on his girls knowing the Lord and the values that come from that relationship. Spending time with his girls provided his most cherished memories.

Survivors include his wife Kimberly of the home; two daughters, Rayna and Kandace; his father Jess and Neila; four sisters, Alicia Alcorn and husband Chief, Sherri Harleman, Kathi Wagner, and Sandi Rowe and husband Jason; and eight nieces and nephews, Allie Bailey, Cassidy Alcorn, Destiny Alcorn, Jaina Harleman, Darsie Harleman, Jordan Rowe, Kaylee Rowe, and Tyler Rowe.

He was preceded in death by his mother; two nieces; and a nephew.

Pastor Ben Heffernan will conduct graveside services at 1:00 PM Friday, September 25th, at the Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The Obituary of Troy White

 

Latroy Franklin “Troy” White, Jr, age 77, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 18, 2020, at his home.

He was born February 26, 1943, in Bilaspur, India.  Troy’s parents, Latroy F. White, Sr and Ada Rue Stiles White were serving as missionaries in India. Troy grew up in India and moved to the United States after he graduated high school.

He later served for four years with the United States Air Force where he was stationed primarily in Montana.

Following his military service, Troy began a career with A. T. & T. where he served as a network engineer for over thirty years.

While working in Oklahoma City, Troy met the love of his life, Millie Kelley.  Troy and Millie were married April 5, 1969, at Parsons, Kansas.  Because of Troy’s work, Troy and Millie made their home in Oklahoma, Illinois and later in Olathe, Kansas.  Following Troy’s retirement in 1998, they moved to Ft. Scott.

In addition to electronics, Troy enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

He was an active member of the Fort Scott Church of the Nazarene.

 

Survivors include his wife, Millie, of the home; two sons, Scott (Michelle) White, of Houston, Texas and Steve (Maggie) White, of Orlando, Florida; six grandchildren, Tyler, Allison, Nickolas, Braden (Sam), Joe and Mollie White and a great-granddaughter, Mia White.  Also surviving is a brother, Timothy White, of Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lucy Tindle.

 

A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd at the U. S. National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Obituary of Bonnie Taylor

Bonnie Sue Taylor, 80, of Bronson, Kansas, passed away Thursday afternoon September 17, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. She was born November 15, 1939, in Coffeyville, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond Samuel and Florence Rhoda (Wyckoff) Mason. She married Ronald “Ronnie” Fred Taylor on May 31, 1959, in Fort Scott, and he survives of the home.

Bonnie was the office supervisor at Newman Young Clinic from 1957 until she retired in 1996. Bonnie attended Xenia Baptist Church. Her family was the light of her life.

In addition to her husband Ronnie, Bonnie is survived by son Raymond Taylor, of Bronson; a sister, Peggy Davis of Fort Scott; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Samuel Mason, and a son, Brad Taylor, April 3, 2001.

Obituary of Charles Smith

Charles Wesley Smith, 95, of Fort Scott, passed away Wednesday afternoon September 16, 2020 at Medicalodge. He was born April 27, 1925, in Devon, Kansas, the son of William George and Bertha Mae (Sauerwein) Smith. He married Ruth Irene Johnston on July 16, 1950, and she preceded him in death in 1988. He married Maxine Louise Kinney on April 30, 1990, and she survives. Charlie and Ruth lived in Louisburg, Kansas from 1950 until 1955, and then Winfield, Kansas. Charlie moved to Fort Scott in 1990. He and Maxine have lived in Fort Scott since 1990.

Charlie graduated from Fulton High School in 1943 and entered Fort Scott Junior College in 1946. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Kansas State University in 1950, and his Master’s Degree from Colorado State University in 1967.

Charlie was the Vocational Ag instructor at Louisburg High School from 1950-1955 and started the first Louisburg FFA Chapter. He worked for the Kansas Extension Service and was the Cowley County Extension Agent from 1955 until 1988.

He served and held office in a number of organizations. He was a board member for the National County Agents Association, was Director of the NCAA North Central Region covering 12 states, Chairman of the NCAA National Scholarship Committee. He served as President, Vice President, and Secretary for the Kansas County Agents Association and was also Board Director for the Kansas State University Ag Alumni.

Charlie received numerous awards and recognitions including Epsilon Sigma Phi State Distinguished Ag Service Award, Epsilon Sigma Phi Meritorious Service Award, National Association of County Agents Distinguished Award, Kansas State 4-H Award, and was both the Jaycee Community Man of the Year and Kiwanis Layman of the Year.

He was active in the First Christian Church of Winfield, Kansas and was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Fort Scott, Kansas. He taught high school age Sunday school classes, and he taught Bible study classes in the Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center. He also volunteered at Mercy Hospital. He and Maxine received the Award of Merit from the Fort Scott City Commission.

Charlie is survived by his three children David Smith of Lawrence, Kansas, Dennis Smith and wife Carol of Louisburg, Kansas, and Sandra Bowzer and husband Greg of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Georgia Mae Hill of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, and Ann Simonsen of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a step-daughter, Judy Kinney Hunter and husband Bill of Platte City, Missouri; a step-son, Doug Kinney and wife Lynn of Manhattan, Kansas; three step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife Ruth, Charlie was also preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, William Smith.
