New Barbershop Opens Soon At 118 S. Main

Hare & Crow is the name of a new barbershop soon to be opened at 118 S. Main.
Matt Park is the owner and soon-to-be barber.

“I recently graduated from Headlines Barber Academy in Kansas City,” Park said. “I have a couple of exams to take and hope to have my license within the next few weeks. We’re putting the finishing touches on the shop as we speak. If all goes to plan, we should be able to open by the end of November.”

Park has put together a link to a community survey he created.
“I’m hoping to get some insight on pricing, hours and services so we can serve our community well,” Park said.

“Hare & Crow is a modern barbershop with a traditional aesthetic and atmosphere,” Park said. “We offer haircuts, straight razor shaves complete with hot lather and steam towels, beard and mustache trims, facials and shampoos.”

“We also plan to sell some retail items,” he said. “Mostly related to men’s hair and grooming, but we will also carry other items such as locally roasted coffee, craft chocolates, and handmade wood and leather goods from local and regional makers.”
“Our shop will be a comfortable and inviting space with a lounge feel for those waiting for their turn in the chair,” he said. “It will be a place to hang out, have a cup of coffee or a pop, chew the fat with friends and neighbors whether you need a haircut or not—loafers are more than welcome.”

“This is a family business,” he said.  “My wife and I bought the building in July of 2020 and we live in the apartment above the shop with our four kids.”

Downtown
Trick-or-Treat Parade!
The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes & appreciates the support of this event from the sponsors below!

10 -12 pm:Walgreens will be taking pictures with a Halloween Backdrop & providing a free 4 x 6 print. The backdrop will also be available throughout the event for pictures with your own camera.
Also, the FSHS Thespians will be doing face painting!
11 am:Parade will start at La Hacienda, down the west side of Main Street to 2nd, then back down the east side of Main Street to Skubitz Plaza.
Following parade:Hot dog, chips & drink will be served to the kids in costume provided through the generous donation of local businesses!

***Businesses along Main Street will be handing out candy during the parade, and businesses not on Main Street as well as any community organizations are welcome to set up a table along Main to pass out candy, coupons, promo items, etc.
Please emailthe Chamber if your business or organization will be passing out candy so we can plan accordingly.

Chamber After-Hours on Nov. 4 at Landmark Bank

Chamber After-hours hosted by the Fort Scott Area Community Foundation

The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce announces an After-hours event hosted by the Fort Scott Area Community Foundation will take place Thursday, November 4, 2021 from 5:15 to 6:30pm at Landmark National Bank, 200 S. Main Street.

The mission of the Community Foundation is to “Honor the Past, Impact the Future” by creating a giving and granting environment which addresses the immediate and long-term charitable needs of our community. The After-hours event will feature grant presentations to the 2021 award recipients. Light refreshments will be served.

Any individual or organization can donate to the foundation in the form of monetary gifts, transfer of real estate, investments, or a memorial. Contributions are placed in an endowed fund which is a permanent pool of resources of which only the interest is used in granting each year. The goal of the endowed funds is to exist in perpetuity so that the needs of the greater Bourbon County area are met both now and in the future.

Third Street Underpass will Close at Clark Street on Nov. 1

CITY OF FORT SCOTT NEWS RELEASE

October 27th, 2021

The City of Fort Scott Wastewater Department will be closing the 3rd Street underpass at Clark Street on Monday, November 1st, 2021 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 pm. Local traffic should avoid this area during this time frame.

40th Annual Candlelight Tour Tickets On Sale November 1

Be an Active Part of History this Holiday Season

 

Fort Scott Kan. – Monday, November 1, 2021, tickets for Fort Scott National Historic Site’s 40th Annual Candlelight Tour go on sale. Tickets are available by calling the Fort at 620-223-0310 (with a major credit card) or by stopping by the Visitor Center on Old Fort Blvd. They are $8.00 per person and non-refundable, children 5 and under are free. It is recommended that you get your tickets early for your choice of tour times as this event frequently sells out.

 

The 40th Annual Candlelight Tour is December 3 and 4, 2021. Tours on December 3 will begin at 6:30 pm and leave every 15 minutes until 9 pm. On Saturday, December 4, the tours will start at 5 pm with the final tour leaving at 8:45 pm. Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow time to park, present/pick up your ticket, and get oriented. Participants are advised to please dress for the weather and the terrain, as the entire tour will be outside.

 

1,000 candle lanterns illuminate the site and reenactors (including you) bring the fort to life. “This year’s tour is about finding peace on the frontier.” said Betty Boyko, Superintendent, Fort Scott National Historic Site. A Solders path to finding peace took many routes. From the Dragoon soldier’s fight as frontier peacekeepers to keeping peace on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails and returning from Mexico and celebrating the peace treaty,  experiencing conflict provided their route to peace.

 

Fort Scott was an active military post from 1842-1853, which was a time of rapid growth and change in the country.  As Fort Scott was being built, the nation grew west, expanding all the way to the Pacific Ocean. With this growth, Fort Scott changed, the mission of its soldiers changed, their experience changed, the environment changed, and the nation changed. Soldiers at Fort Scott lived their lives to the fullest despite the constant change.

 

From November 1-March 31, Fort Scott National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service, will be open for its winter hours of operation.  The site exhibit areas and visitor center are open daily from 8:30 am-4:30 pm. The park grounds are open daily from ½ hour before sunrise until ½ hour after sunset. Chamber Coffee hosted by Trinity Lutheran Church

The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce invites members and guests to a Chamber Coffee this Thursday, October 28th at 8 a.m. hosted by Trinity Lutheran Church. The coffee will be at 2824 S. Horton Street. Coffee, juice, and light refreshments will be served, and attendees may enter a drawing for door prizes.

Michael Apfel is the pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, an LC-MS congregation. Weekly services are on Sundays at 9 a.m. with Bible study following.

Hedgehog INK Begins Writing Wednesdays

Writing Wednesdays start at Hedgehog.INK! on November 3, 10 and 17 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. to kick-off
National Novel Writing Month.

“There is no fee for the sessions and they are intended to provide encouragement and support in our writing endeavors,” Jan Hedges, owner, said. “Whether it be writing a novel, a poem, working on a memoir, cookbook, genealogy or keeping a journal, you are invited to attend. No matter your age or writing skill level, you are invited to attend. Please help us share the word with others. We will meet in the Great Room at Hedgehog.INK!”

Lots of Options For Kids On Halloween

Many activities are planned for Fort Scott’s entertainment this Halloween.

Starting Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Common Ground Coffee House Fort Scott High School Debate and Forensic Students will be reading spooky stories.

Friday, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Presbyterian Village Assisted Living staff will be hosting trick or treaters outside the facility.

Also Friday, from  4 to 7 p.m., Briggs Auto Lot will be hosting trick or treaters.

Saturday at Buck Run Community Center from 9 to 10 a.m., kids can make creepy, crawly crafts for $1 and then come back from 1 to 3 p.m. to carve a pumpkin for $3.

At the Butcher Block, one can purchase smoked turkey legs or hot dogs for dinner and enjoy caramel apples at 6 p.m.

The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce Halloween Parade will be held Saturday, October 30 at 11 a.m. in downtown Fort Scott.

Starting at 10:30 a.m., there will be special activities including pictures with a spooktacular backdrop at the City Scales building on North Main Street,  and face painting by Fort Scott High School Thespians.

The parade of children will trick-or-treat merchants along Main Street, starting at La Hacienda Restaurant, south to 2nd Street, crossing the street then heading north back to Skubitz Plaza, according to a Chamber press release.

Here are the business names that will be set up in front of The Liberty Theatre/Crooners: Front Door Real Estate, Fort Scott Gun and Pawn, Dr. Burke’s Office, and Paws and Claws.

Any businesses or organizations in the community, not located along Main Street, are welcome to set up a table on the sidewalk also providing treats, coupons, or other handouts for kids, according to the release.

Children are encouraged to bring a sack or bag to collect treats along the parade route.

Following the parade, a free hot dog lunch will be served to kids in costumes, according to the release.

On Sunday, October 3, Sonic Drive-In Restuarant will have 50 cent corndogs for sale all day.

On Sunday evening, both Community Christan Church and the Fort Scott Church of the Nazarene will be hosting trunk and treats for the community.

Friday Night Free Concert: St. Martin’s Academy

Students of Saint Martin’s Academy will be the featured entertainment at this week’s Friday Night Concert. The school currently has an enrollment of 55 boys, ages 13 to 18. The music department is under the direction of Dave Agee and Daniel Kerr.

“This lively group of young men will warm your heart with their endearing performances of folk, country, and gospel songs,“ concert-series organizer Ralph Carlson said. “In addition to their musical talent, these students have proven to be an asset to the community with their willingness to help out in various areas. We are pleased to welcome Saint Martin’s Academy back to perform in our downtown pavilion. This concert will conclude the 2021 season, so bring a friend and join us for an enjoyable evening of music.”

The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Heritage Park Pavilion at First and Main streets. The shows, sponsored by the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce, are free and open to the public. Stephan Moses will serve as sound technician this week. Due to limited seating, attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Common Ground Coffee Co., 12 E. Wall Street.
