The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to attend the 15th Annual Forks & Corks event. Forks & Corks is one of the most popular events among Fort Scott locals and visitors!

Veterans Grand Ball Nov. 10

The Friends of Fort Scott NHS are once again hosting an 1800s Grand Ball on Saturday, November 10, 2018, as part of the citywide Veterans Day Weekend in Fort Scott.

We will honor all veterans and current military personnel as well as remember the WW1 armistice signed on November 11, 1918.

Veterans and military personnel, along with their escorts, will be leading off the Grand March to begin our evening of 1800’s period dancing and music.

We would like to encourage everyone attending the Veterans Day Weekend activities to come and participate in the 1800s Grand Ball, and likewise, we encourage anyone attending the 1800s Grand Ball to take part in the other activities offered during the weekend in Fort Scott.

All funds raised at the Grand Ball will go to support the activities of the Friends of Fort Scott NHS.

The Friends provide support to the national historic site in a variety of ways, such as assisting with educational activities and programs for all ages as well as providing refreshments for special events.

Winter Hours For Fort Scott National Historic Site

The leaves are changing for fall and winter, so are the hours of operation at Fort Scott National Historic Site.
Beginning Thursday, November 1, the park visitor center, park store, and historic structures will be open daily from 8:30 am–4:30 pm through March 31, 2019.
The buildings are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. The park grounds, walkways, and parking lot are open from ½ hour before sunrise until ½ hour after sunset daily.

Fort Scott National Historic Site is a fee-free park that offers a glimpse into the growth of our nation through a short film, interactive audio-visual programs, displays, the museum, and historic objects.

A walk through the fort reveals the significant role it played in the opening of the West, as well as, the Civil War and the strife in the State of Kansas that preceded it.
Park Rangers are on hand and happy to help you learn more about the area and plan your visit. For more information about Fort Scott National Historic Site programs, the candlelight tour, or other activities, please call the park at 620-223-0310, or visit our website at www.nps.gov/fosc.

Fort Scott National Historic Site Announces Its 37th Annual Candlelight Tour

Featuring Audience Participation

Fort Scott KS – On December 7 and 8, 2018, Fort Scott National Historic Site (FOSC) will present its 37th Annual Candlelight Tour. Tours on December 7 will begin at 6:30 p.m. and leave every 15 minutes until 9:00 p.m.

On Saturday, December 8, the tours will start at 5:00 p.m. with the final tour leaving at 8:45 p.m.
Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow time to park, present/pick up your ticket, and get oriented.
Tickets go on sale Thursday, November 1st and are available by calling the Fort at 620-223-0310 (with a major credit card) or by stopping by the Visitor Center on Old Fort Blvd. They are $8.00 per person and non-refundable, children 5 and under are free.
It is recommended that you get your tickets early for your choice of tour times as this event frequently sells out.

Participants are advised to please dress for the weather and the terrain, as they will be outside and on sidewalks.

1,000 candle lanterns illuminate the site and 100 reenactors (plus yourself) bring the fort to life.

“This year’s tour will include audience participation. It will feature five stops around the site beginning with the fort’s construction in 1842 and ending with the auction of 1855, where the fort’s buildings were sold to the public two years after the U.S. Army abandoned Fort Scott,” shared Betty Boyko, Superintendent, FOSC. “We encourage everyone to dress up (in modern or period clothes) and step back in time,” continued Boyko.

During the tour, you have the opportunity to become a skilled contractor, hired to help build the fort; join in a dance; learn period etiquette and the language of the fan, and enlist in the U.S. Army stationed at the Fort.  You will also have an opportunity to bid on the buildings as the fort is sold at auction.

Fort Scott was an active military post from 1842-1853, which was a time of rapid growth and change in the country.  As Fort Scott was being built, the nation grew west, expanding all the way to the Pacific Ocean. With this growth, Fort Scott changed, the mission of its soldiers changed, the experience of its residents changed, the environment changed, and the nation changed. Soldiers and civilians at Fort Scott lived their lives to the fullest despite the constant change.

Friday Night Concert: Church of Christ Acapella

“I am pleased to have the Crawford Street Church of Christ produce this Friday’s concert,” Ralph Carlson, organizer of the free Friday Night Concerts at Heritage Park.

“Their acapella music is a real treat to hear and the songs they do are songs that are familiar to the audience,” he said. “It often ends up with the entire audience taking part in the singing.”

In the event of inclement weather, the show will be moved indoors from the regular location at First and Main Streets to The Common Grounds Coffee shop on Main.

The concert starts at 7 pm.

“Come early as seating is limited. You might want to bring lawn chairs,”  Carlson said.

Gilligan’s Island at FSCC

Castmembers sing the opening song, “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Island” Saturday night at the Ellis Fine Arts Center at Fort Scott Community College. From left: Jasper Dunn, Katie Button, Jared Oshel, Fayelyn Kmiec, Aiden Ballinger, Karri Johnson, and Harold Hicks.

Oct. 19-21, Fort Scott Community College Theatre members presented the musical version of “Gilligan’s Island”.

“Gilligan’s Island”  was a comedy TV program from the mid-1960s.

Any musical is a challenge for a small department, director  Allen Twitchel, stated in the bulletin for the show.

“We are attempting to produce a professional-quality show with cardboard and crepe paper while juggling everyone’s busy schedules,” Twitchel said.

The group of students and college staff worked diligently to exceed all expectations, Twitchel said.

Listening to the audience chuckle and clap, the audience seemed to agree.

The setting is a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean, where seven people are stranded during a shipwreck.

They come to grips with the situation, work on schemes to get off the island and are visited by a visitor from outer-space.

Gilligan was portrayed by  FSCC student Aiden Ballinger, Skipper by former FSCC student Jared Oshel, Mr. Howell by FSCC English IntructorHarold Hicks, Mrs. Howell by FSCC Office Assistant Karri Johnson, Ginger by FSCC student Fayelyn Kmiec , Professor by FSCC student Jasper Dunn, Mary Ann by FSCC student Katie Button, and Alien by FSCC student Marcus Robinson.

Several solos were performed by  Ballinger, Button, Kmiec, Dunn, and Hicks.

Gilligan and Ginger both have an emotional meltdown when the castaways learn they are stranded on a deserted island.
The group ties itself together in preparation of a hurricane.
The outer-space alien, played by Marcus Robinson, left, aims a weapon at the Skipper and Gilligan.
The group sings “Worlds Apart” in one of the final scenes of the play.
From left: Marcus Robinson, Karri Johnson, and Harold Hicks wait in line to greet the audience following the musical play Saturday night
