Governor Colyer Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Victims of Santa Fe Shooting

Topeka – In accordance with Executive Order 10-12 and today’s proclamation signed by President Donald J. Trump, Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from until sun-down on May 22, 2018, to honor the memory of those lost in the horrific shooting that took place in Santa Fe, TX.

 

“Our hearts are with the people of Texas today,” said Governor Colyer. “We pray for the families of the victims and keep them in our thoughts.”

Mercy Health for Life offers 4-Week Fitness Program for Ages 6-10

Kids Fit-n-Fun Program Begins June 7

 

FORT SCOTT, Kan. (May 18, 2018) – Your kids have no reason to complain about being bored this summer. At Mercy Health for Life, children ages six through10-years olds can remain physically active by participating in the Fit-n-Fun program.

The four-week program is designed to provide children with an opportunity to participate in physical fitness with a variety of fun activities in a safe environment.

Dates for the 2018 Fit-n-Fun program are Tuesday and Thursday, June 7 through July 3. Class sessions are 45 minutes beginning at 9 a.m. Cost is $20 per child for Health for Life members and $25 for nonmembers. Sessions will be instructed by Brianna Culbertson, certified youth fitness specialist, and personal trainer.

“The goal of the fit-n-fun program is to teach our youth the importance of daily physical activity, eating right and that exercise can be fun,” said Kirk Sharp, Mercy fitness center manager.

“We hope to see the kids take something that they have learned from the program and incorporate it into their lives, spring-boarding a lifetime of healthy habits,” Sharp added.

On the final day, kids will participate in special activities and compete for prizes.

Grief Support For Loss of Infant

Infant Loss Remembrance Service Held May 26

Fort Scott, Kan. (May 18, 2018) – If you or your family has been impacted by pregnancy loss or the loss of an infant shortly after birth, Mercy wants to offer you a time for reflection and comfort.

You’re invited to come find support and healing at an Infant Loss Remembrance Service on Saturday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Cemetery located west of Fort Scott on Locust Road.  Anyone in the community or surrounding area who has suffered this type of loss is welcome to attend.  

Our time together will include a short service and time of prayer, plus a bubble release with opportunity for participants to write messages to those children being remembered.

In case of rain, the service will be moved to Mercy Hospital’s McAuley Conference Center.

City of Fort Scott Seeks Members on Two Boards

  • One opening (City resident) on the Fort Scott Housing Authority

The function of the Housing Authority is to provide leadership, oversight and participate in board meetings. The Housing Authority Board is the legal and financially responsible governing body of the public housing authority and the first line of accountability for their performance. This board meets on a monthly basis.

The function of the Fort Scott Library Board is to review requests in reference to the library.

If you have a desire to serve on either one of these boards and meet the above requirements, please submit a letter of interest to the City Clerk, Diane Clay, 123 S. Main, Fort Scott, Kansas 66701. She will then submit your letter of interest for consideration to the City Commission. All of the boards and commissions serve on a volunteer basis and are not compensated. FSCC Masonry Students Build Sensory Garden In Pittsburg

The Fort Scott Community College Masonry program was asked by the Everybody Plays Committee, a task force of the City of Pittsburg Parks and Recreation Department, to build a sensory garden structure at Schlanger Park in Pittsburg, Ks.

The students spent part of the semester doing just that. They measured the groundwork out, laid the blocks, helped pour the concrete and filled in the dirt for the garden.

Once everything is set and ready to go, In The Garden will plant flowers and plants that attract butterflies and add sensory elements for the community to enjoy the beauty. The sensory garden is fully accessible for all to partake in the experience.

“The committee was so pleased to be able to offer local students this opportunity for a real-life experience,” says Barbara Herbert.

Obituary For Shirley Westcoat

Shirley Mae Wescoat, 85, of Fort Scott passed away Friday morning, May 11, 2018, at Cavalry Crossing in Fort Scott, Kansas.

She was born December 28, 1932, in Parkersburg, West Virginia the daughter of Clair John and Sarah Inez (Vance) Butcher.

She married Herbert Jacob “Jake” Wescoat February 17, 1951, in Sacramento, California. He preceded her in death on September 2, 2000.

Survivors include her children, Gary Wescoat and wife Susan, of Fort Scott, Dorothea Sipe, of Topeka, Kansas, Carol Lathem and husband Lawrence, of Durant, Oklahoma, and Sandra Gates of Fort Scott; a brother, Clifton Butcher, of Parkersburg, West Virginia; eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband Jake, Shirley was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Lois Claar, and a brother, Gene Butcher.

Following cremation, memorial services were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2018, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, with interment following at the US National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Care to Share or Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall and left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street, PO Box 309, Fort Scott, KS 66701. Condolences may be submitted to the online guestbook at konantz-cheney.com.

The big top structure is set up by workers Thursday morning in preparation for the Carson and Barnes Circus this evening (May 18).

The Carson and Barnes Circus will show its last performance this evening, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bourbon County Fairgrounds on South Horton.

Tickets at the door are $20 for adults and $12 for children under 12 years old.

The show is sponsored by The Fort Scott Chamber of Commerce

Water Main Work Begins May 21 on West Second Street

City of Ft. Scott Water Distribution Department

The City of Fort Scott Water Distribution Department will be reworking the water main and services on West 2nd Street from Osbun to Lowman beginning 5/21/2018.

Work is expected to take approximately one week to complete. Part of the work involves extending water service across West 2nd Street.

During this project, West 2nd Street between Osbun and Lowman will be closed to traffic.

Residents in the area may at times experience an interruption of water service or have discolored water and or air. The department will do all it can to keep water service interruptions and road closures at a minimum.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact City Hall at 223- 0550 and ask for the Water Distribution Department.

Obituary For Glen Eldon Dyer

Glen Eldon Dyer, age 96, resident of Clarksville, TN, went to be with the Lord on May 14, 2018, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after a brief illness. Pastor Larry Stevicks will conduct graveside services at 11:00 Monday, May 21st, in the U. S. National Cemetery.  Military honors will be provided by the U. S. Marine Honor Guard.  Local services are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main.

Uniontown School District Receives $100,000 Grant For Fitness Center

West Bourbon Elementary School Principal Tyler Jackman received an email from the Kansas Department of Education in late winter about an opportunity to provide a fitness center in the school district.

He got the green light from Superintendent Bret Howard to apply for the grant and enlisted the help of other district employees.

“The application process was simple,” Jackman said. “They wanted to know what equipment we had, what condition it was in.”

The grant application was due April 6, and on May 16 they received notice that the district received a $100,000 grant.

Governor Jeff Colyer and Jake Steinfeld, Chairman of the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils, announced three Kansas schools that were selected to each receive a DON’T QUIT! Fitness Center.

The multi-million-dollar physical fitness campaign named Lincoln Elementary School in Fredonia, Jardine Middle School in Topeka and Uniontown USD 235 in Uniontown as the state’s most outstanding schools for demonstrating leadership in getting and keeping their students fit.

“We are excited, this will be a great asset to our community,” Jackman said. “The community will have access.”

The room is the former library of the junior high/high school, that is currently housing the USD 235 Board of Education. The outside access door is near the southeast corner of the room, which leads to the south parking lot of the school.

 The proposed site for the fitness center is the former school library at the junior high school, which is being underutilized, Jackman said.

Installation begins this summer and a public ribbon cutting will take place in early September, Howard said.

School starts in the district on August 30 this year, he said.

National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils State of Kansas DON’T QUIT! Campaign initial requirements:

  • The school must be a public or public charter school.
  • The majority of students must be between the ages of 8-13 years old.
  • The school must have a preexisting room on the school’s property that is available for equipment installation during the summer of 2018.
  • The room must be approximately 900-1500 square feet.

  • The proposed fitness center will be in the junior high wing of USD 235 campus.

Adin and Wilma Leach 60th Anniversary

Adin and Wilma Leach celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary April 28, 2018, at Barto’s in Frontenac with family and friends.

They were married April 26, 1958, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville, Kansas.

Pictured are the five daughters of the couple. Their son, Alan, died three years ago of brain cancer.
