Only Two Weeks Left to Apply to be a Vital Voice for Kansas Water Resources
The Kansas Water Office is currently accepting applications from those who would like to participate as a member of one of the 14 Regional Advisory Committees (RACs) which are established by the Kansas Water Authority (KWA). Interested individuals are encouraged to apply soon as the deadline is only two weeks away.
These committees play a key role in advising the KWA on implementation of each region’s water supply priorities as part of the Kansas Water Vision and the Kansas water planning process as a whole. They help identify and provide input on other emerging water resource related issues and concerns. The committee selection process will ensure all of the water users and interests within the region are represented.
Kansans can have a definite lasting impact on the future of water resources through RAC membership. Interested persons can apply at www.kwo.ks.gov. The application deadline is May 31, 2019.
Note to Editor: The Americans with Disabilities Act, (42 U.S.C. 12101) requires the Kansas Water Office to print the reasonable accommodations messages.

With the 2018-19 school year and basketball season coming to an end, Fort Scott Community College Head Men’s basketball coach Michael Cook is excited about seven freshmen returning for their sophomore season. All seven of the freshman have started at least one or more times and will be a nice mix of talent and experience to go along with the incoming freshman.
The returners will be Kannon Jones, who started at point guard every game and was ranked second in the conference in assists, Craig Jordan who was named second team all-conference and second team all-region, Vinny Barron who missed the first part of the season with a broken finger will return at full strength after starting part-time the last part of the season, Evan Mitchell will be coming back after sitting out the second semester with a broken foot, Kevin Shead and Jesse Lawrence had a solid season after adjusting to the speed of the college game and made contributions toward the final push in conference. Also, coming back after redshirting this season is Dontrell Sanders, Sanders started every game for the Greyhounds the 17-18 season averaging 10 points and 8 rebounds.
“First let me say that I am excited about all seven of these young men returning to play basketball at FSCC, but more importantly they are all on track to graduate on time. Having this many returners will give us great leadership for the incoming freshman and also give us experience for a solid conference push towards the end of the year, FSCC Head Coach Michael Cook said.

There will be a free concert this Sunday for the community to celebrate the restoration of the Fort Scott High School Steinway piano.
The concert will be held Sunday, May 19 at 3 p.m. in the FSHS Auditorium, 1005 S. Main.
“This will feature the newly restored Steinway piano,” FSHS Music Instructor Meredith Reid said. “Performers will include students, alumni, and music teachers. The purpose of the concert is to recognize all of the generous donors who made this project possible.”
“We sent it off February 2018,” Ried said. “It was restored by Mike Dugan of Dugan’s Piano Service located in Nixa, MO.”
Pictures of the project from beginning to end will also be displayed.
The mystery of who donated the prized Steinway to the school has never been solved, Reid said.
Refreshments will be served following the concert.

No Mercy
This is the first story in a National Public Radio series that will explore how the closure of a rural hospital, Mercy Hospital Fort Scott, disrupts a community’s health care, economy and identity.
Across the country, more than 100 rural hospitals like Fort Scott’s have closed since 2010, under increasing financial pressure.
Because of public response, NPR added a Facebook page for public comments, see the last link in this feature.

The featured group for the Friday Night Free Concert is the St. Martin’s Academy vocal and instrumental ensemble.
The group has an eclectic repertoire of folk, classical and Christian music, said Ralph Carlson, event coordinator.
“The St. Martin’s Academy performed for us last fall and was a real hit with our audience,” Carlson said. “Instruments include guitars and a bagpipe. The show starts at 7 p.m., come early and bring your lawn chairs as seating is limited. In the event of foul weather, the show will be moved to the Common Grounds Coffee Shop.”

Until recently an engraved stone in Uniontown’s City Park was surrounded by clumps of tall grass.
On May 14, Uniontown City Superintendent Bobby Rich was working on the mound that used to contain the grass.
This pictured stone is a mystery to Rich.
“We don’t know where it came from,” he said.
The lettering is mostly weathered off, and almost unreadable.
If the public knows information about the origin of the stone, contact Uniontown City Hall, at 756-4742.
Governor directs flags to be lowered in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day
In recognition of the National Peace Officers Memorial Day on Wednesday, May 15, Governor Laura Kelly has ordered flags throughout the State of Kansas to be flown at half-staff from sunup to sundown on May 15. President Donald J. Trump also issued a flag directive honoring National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
“Each year we recognize law enforcement officers for putting service above self to protect fellow Kansans,” Kelly said. “I have a deep appreciation for these officers and their families – and on behalf of the State of Kansas, thank them for their commitment.”
H.J. Res. 730, P.L. 87-726 designates May 15 of each year as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of federal, state and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

Shoppers at Walmart in Fort Scott can see boxes in the former self-checkout area and the removal of a few cash register stations at the front of the store.

In addition, the cell phone area has been relocated to the electronics department.

Walmart is remodeling.
“We are getting ready for online shopping,” said Scott, an associate manager at Fort Scott. “That’s where you order online, then come and pick it up. It will be sometime in June.”
“The self-register area will be bigger,” he said. “And there will be one on the north (of the line cash register stands), within the next two weeks.”
The number of cash registers has been reduced to make room for the expanded self-registers.
The empty space, formerly the cell phone sales area, as you enter the southeast door of Walmart, is closed.
“It is undecided right now what the previous cell phone area will be used for,” Scott said.
