Letter to The Editor: Randy Nichols

Caring for others

The United States is the richest nation in the world and we, the people, have historically supported programs to care for the less fortunate, underserved, desperate people of the world.  In the dysfunction of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) dismantling of USAID, the shelf life of five hundred metric tons of life saving high energy biscuits expired. All five hundred tons were taken off the shelf and destroyed.  Because of this, starving people, mostly children, will suffer and some will die.  Their families will grieve.  We should grieve with them.

Some USAID programs were to be shifted to the State Department.  The Secretary of State told congress that how these programs were instituted would reflect the priorities of this administration.  Abandoning desperate people is not government efficiency or even good foreign policy. It is moral bankruptcy and greed conceived and supported at the highest levels of our government.  This is not the way to make America great.  Is this what you voted for?

  1. Shameful waste. Sickening when we see starving populations on the evening news, daily. What has happened to reasonable people in goverment who make these decisions?

  2. It is horrible what we have become and to think at least 1/3rd of the people in the US support this lack of humanity and empathy.I used to feel so good about America when we were helping not hurting others Giving while expecting nothing is the most wonderful and rewarding of feelings…Not only that but in the meantime other civilized countries are passing us by with Healthcare (including new Research), new green technology and are progressing while we are wasting our resources, time and money criminalizing immigrants, taking away the rights of LBGTQ, women and other minorities, We are Going backwards! So sad about the waste of all of those high protein biscuits when the people in GAZA and other countries are starving.

  3. There is no way food whose shelf life expired a few weeks ago was recently manufactured and shipped overseas.

In fact, I looked up the shelf life of these high energy bisquits and it is 48 months.

The reality is it had to have been manufactured, shipped, and stored overseas long before Trump became president.

So this begs the question; Why did former president Biden not use it for it’s intended purpose?

  4. The Biden administration failed to deliver this food to the needy, and by the time the Trump administration took over this food had approximately 180 days before it expired.

The fact of the matter is if the Trump administration had distributed expired food to people the Democratic Party and the Media would have condemned him for that too, which created a double bind dilemma, or in other words, a damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.

So, why did this food with a 4 year(1,461 days) shelf life expire before being used? Is it really Trumps fault, who has been in office for 187 days?

    1. Who even really knows how much of our food and supplies (expired) are sitting in warehouses in the USA and the rest of the world? I bet there are still warehouses with Civil Defense supplies from the 50’s and 60’s still out there!
Show me the latest audits LOL
      Totally different universe!

      1. Give it up…it is about empathy, kindness and feeding the hungry. It is not about the incompetence that you perceive. Show us your latest audits because your bets do not hold any weight. I am amazed how many people who proclaim to love Jesus do not want to do one thing He commands we do. America has become a cold cruel selfish country.

  5. Here is the explanation to the concerns about expiration and failure to distribute
1)USAID plans and purchases supplies at least one year in advance. These 500 tons were purchased during the Biden administration. They were being held as contingency supplies for unexpected disasters/emergencies. However, a plan was in place for distribution.
2)DOGE personnel cutbacks disrupted usual USAID processes
    3) USAID remaining people recognized expiration dates, repeatedly requested distribution per plans in place but DOGE leadership never responded with approval (source Jenn Godman Newser AI)
    4) In May Sec. of State Rubio testified to congress that officials were awaiting signoff from DOGE to transfer the stockpile of biscuits to the World Food Bank for distribution before expiration.
    5) Michael Rigas, deputy Sec. of State for management and resources testified to the Senate Foreign Relations committee regarding the lack of transfer and distribution. He said, “…this was a failure.” (point 4&5 from ABC news Sharon Kingston and Kelly McCally.)
The Trump administration had knowledge of the problem , the time and the means to act. They failed starving children.

    1. These bisquits were stored in DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, for emergency purposes and not scheduled to be shipped anywhere.

To mobilize and expedite and distribute this supply in DUBAI before it expired would be highly unlikely given the circumstances, and anyone who has ever worked for the government (any president) would likely agree!

Has anyone even looked up how many tons of food we ship to other countries? It is approx 1 MILLION METRIC TONS each year! So 500 tons is .05% of that. So what about the other 95.5% that gets delivered? To only have .05% waste in any production/shipping /distribution process is as perfect as it gets!

To believe that USAID is so efficient they could have actually moved this food is at best wishful thinking.

Meanwhile, the media is NOT reporting that The State Department says it has approved 44,422 metric tons of food to be transferred or reprogrammed through partnerships with the World Food Program (WFP), Catholic Relief Services, Mercy Corps, and Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA). That includes 30,000 tons of short-dated food supplies already programmed for delivery to crisis zones like Syria, Bangladesh, and Sudan.

The media is also ignoring any news that the state department currently has 59,305 metric tons of in-kind food commodities stored in warehouses across the United States and abroad, and have “already programmed all the food expiring before Oct 2026.

The fact is the media and the Democratic party believed this was an opportunity to take some moral highground by defaming the current administration. This story about the food waste is propaganda (def information, especially of a biased nature, used to promote a particular political cause or point of view), and it’s sad that so many intelligent people, using media sources like CNN, MSNBC etc fall for it.

    2. Trump does not care about starving Muslims..Hell he doesn’t even care about struggling Americans.
