Marilyn Louise Bruner, age 76, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Monday, February 24, 2020, at her home. She was born November 5, 1943, in Mapleton, KS, the daughter of Walter Eberly and Agnes Mackie Bruner.

Marilyn loved spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She and her brother Joe always planted a large garden. She enjoyed baking, cooking, dancing, gardening, playing cards and board games. She also enjoyed attending church and dining out with friends. Her CB handle was “Dancing Queen”.

Survivors include a sister, Venita Miller, Kincaid, KS; two sisters in law, Darla Bruner, Ft. Scott, KS, and Freda Bruner, Mound City, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Pauline Seitz, Lorraine Wilcox, Leora Ross, Shirley Ball, and an infant sister; three brothers, Virgil, Joseph, and Willard Bruner; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 29^th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Sunny Slope Cemetery, Blue Mound, KS.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until service time at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Patricia Sue Warzel Keating, age 93, a resident of Fort Scott, passed away Friday, February 14th, 2020 at the Kansas University Medical Center.

Daughter of Gus and Grace (Good) Warzel, she was born in Fort Scott on April 20th,1926. Educated in the Fort Scott school system, Patricia graduated High School with the Class of 1943. She and her sister, Edith joined the Cadet Nurse Core in 1944, graduating in 1947. Patricia met many of her life long friends while in nurses training. Upon completion of the program, she worked as a registered nurse for Doctors Hubert and Leland Randles in the Randles Clinic, Fort Scott.

It was there, she met the love of her life, Edward Michael Keating. Together with her sister Edith Warzel and Bernard Gorman, they were married June 9, 1949, in a double wedding ceremony at Mary Queen of Angels Church in Fort Scott.

Patricia remained a lifelong member of the parish. Ed preceded her in death on February 3rd, 2013.

Patricia’s life was devoted to her faith and family and they were the greatest source of her joy. She loved deeply and prayed constantly. Her life was a testament to us all and ours will be forever changed without her.

Patricia is survived by her six children, twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren with two on the way and two great- great- grandchildren with one on the way.

Son Shawn (Jackie) and wife Sandi (Hobbs) of Fort Scott, their children Vincent and Courtney Woods, Riley, Kassen and Karsyn of Redfield, Ks, Jesse Woods of Fort Scott, Andrew Woods and Kameron, Keegan, Karter and Kali Woods of Mound City, Ks., Grace, Faith, Shawn II and Connor Keating of Fort Scott, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to her parents, Patricia was preceded in death by sisters Thais Warzel, Edith (Bernard) Gorman and Shirley (Charles) Keal and brothers Thaddeus (Jack) Warzel and Robert (Nellie) Warzel.

Father Yancey Burgess will celebrate Mass of Christian Burial Friday, February 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

The Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Charles Earl “Charley” Schubert, 75 of Americus, Kansas, formerly of Uniontown, Kansas, passed away, Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. He was born, October 3, 1944 in Fort Scott, Kansas the son of Ira Edward and Doris Elizabeth (Likely) Schubert. He married Lora May Gerdsen on December 18, 1966 in Uniontown, Kansas, she survives of the home.

Charley grew up in and around Hiattville, Kansas, he was a member of the 1962 Graduating Class of Uniontown High School. After High School, he served three years in the U.S. Army. He was an Operating Engineer for City Service/Southern Star a Natural Gas Company which moved he and his family around the State of Kansas with their final move being to Americus, Kansas. He attended the Countryside Baptist Church of Americus, Kansas.

In addition to his wife, Lora of the home, he is survived by two sons, Ben and his wife, Jennifer Schubert and Mark Schubert, all of Emporia, Kansas, a daughter, Erica and her husband, Olivier Schubert-Chikly, of Uniontown, Kansas, two brothers, Don and his wife, Janice Schubert of Mound City, Kansas and Roger and his wife, Lorene Schubert of Enid, Oklahoma, two grandsons, Dalton and Brendan and a great granddaughter, Sophia. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Jim, John, Walter (Dick) and Gary, a sister, Ruth Keith, and a granddaughter, Cherie.

The family will have a Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 21, 2020 at the Countryside Baptist Church in Americus. The Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, in Fort Scott, Kansas. Burial will be in the Hatch Cemetery near Uniontown, Kansas. Members of the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 V.F.W. will conduct Military Honors at the Cemetery. Karen Lynn Stewart, age 70, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 14, 2020, at her home.

She was born February 8, 1950, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Robert Johnson and Beverly Struble Johnson.

She married Paul Stewart on September 27, 1974, at Nevada, Missouri.

In earlier years, she worked for the Western Insurance Company and owned her own beauty shop. She later operated the Great Scott Restaurant for a time. Karen enjoyed traveling and attending her grandchildren’s activities. She also enjoyed playing cards and going to the casinos.

Survivors include her husband, Paul, of the home; her son, Brian Slavens and wife, Hallie, of Pittsburg, Kansas and five grandchildren, Wesley, Winston, Jace, Brennan and Peyton Slavens. Also surviving is her sister, Kathy Adams, of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Johnson and Beverly Johnson Scott and an infant son, Brad Slavens.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 22^nd at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Robert Eugene Cochran, Jr. age 58, resident of Yates Center, KS, died Wednesday, February 12, 2020, as the result of highway accident near Yates Center.

He was born December 31, 1961, in Pueblo, CO, the son of Robert Eugene Cochran, Sr. and Barbara Jean Davis Cochran.

Bob served in the U. S. Army. He was discharged due to a training accident.

Bob enjoyed fishing, camping, dirt track racing, and football, especially the Denver Broncos. He loved spending time with his granddaughter, attending her activities, and being with family. Bob was a generous man and willing to help anyone in need.

Survivors include his wife Brandy of the home; daughters Amy Lee and Tasha Cochran; stepdaughter Tina Dixon; brothers Donnie Cochran and Tim Cochran; stepbrother Allen Smith; sisters Evelyn Cox and Debbie Tenpenny; and eight grandchildren including Elena Rose Dixon who Robert was raising.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Regina Wenger; and his parents.

Graveside committal services will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday, February 19^th, at the U. S. National Cemetery, Ft. Scott.

Military honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post #1165 V.F.W. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 1:15 PM at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Linda Kay Wheeler, age 78, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Monday, February 10, 2020, at her home.

She was born July 29, 1941, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Chester and Mildred Rogers Seaver. She graduated from Ft. Scott high school with the class of 1959. Kay married Fletcher Wheeler on July 9, 1960, in Miami, OK.

She enjoyed being outside with the wildlife and her dogs. Kay was a fan of Elvis and liked watching the news and the Kansas City Chiefs on television. She looked forward to a great reunion at the Rainbow Bridge with all her past beloved pets.

Survivors include her husband Fletcher of the home; two daughters, Shelly Shirley and husband Tom, Springfield, MO, and Lisa Wheeler, Clearwater, FL; a brother, Jerry Seaver and wife Suzzane, TX; two grandchildren Kaitlyn Shirley, and Daniel Shirley and wife Ashley; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Ronald Seaver; and a sister Betty Chambers.

There was cremation.

Kay’s wishes were no services.

Jerry Eugene Nafgzer, 83, of Fort Scott, Kansas, formerly of Lancaster, Ohio, went to be with his Lord peacefully, Monday afternoon, February 3, 2020 at the Guest Home Estates of Fort Scott.

He was born November 23, 1936, in Obetz, Ohio, the son of Burl Monroe and Hazel (Dewey) Nafzger. He married Judy Arlene Kilbarger on March 6, 1959 in Sugar Grove, Ohio, she survives of the home.

Jerry was a man who loved the Lord and was loved by all who knew him. He and his wife, Judy, moved here from Lancaster, Ohio, five and a half years ago to be near their son and his family.

In addition to his wife, Judy, he is survived by a son and wife, Jerry and Debbie Nafzger, of Fort Scott, daughter and husband, Victoria and Mark Alten of Lancaster, Ohio, a grandson and wife, Matthew and Stefanie Alten, and 3 granddaughters, Sarah Beth Alten, MacKenzie and husband, Ricky Salgado and Shelby and husband, Kenny Shaw and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tom Nafzger.

Pastor Adam Reynolds will officiate graveside services for Jerry Nafzger at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street.

Marjorie Mae Foster, age 98, died Thursday, January 23, 2020, at the Medical Lodge in Fort Scott, Kansas. She was born September 14, 1921, in Fort Scott the daughter of Frank and Ruby (Gump) Phillips.  She married Melvin “Boots” Foster November 2, 1940, in Nevada, Missouri. He preceded her in death on February 13, 2007. Before retiring, Marjorie was secretary and bookkeeper for Boots Foster Floor Covering Service.

Marjorie was a long-time member of the First Christian Church of Fort Scott. In her younger years she loved playing golf with her husband and good friends.  She was active in the Ladies Golf Association of Fort Scott and Mound City.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Kay Heffernan and husband Don, of Hebron, Kentucky, and a son, Melvin Foster and wife Susan, of Fort Scott. Marjorie had three grandchildren: Steven Heffernan and wife Jane of Hebron, Kentucky, Heather Foster of Webb City, Missouri, and Matt Foster and wife Mary of Manhattan, Kansas. She had seven great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

Rev. Reed Hartford will conduct graveside services 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Konantz Cheney Funeral Home before leaving for the cemetery.
