Eleanor Lucile Quick, age 80, a resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died early Thursday, April 19, 2018, at Presbyterian Village, Ft. Scott.

She was born on May 17, 1937, in Redfield, KS, the daughter of James and Iris Wilson Endicott.

She married Dennis “Denny” Quick on January 23, 1960, in Ft. Scott. When not caring for the family at home, Lucile cleaned house for area residents for over 30 years. She loved spending time with her family. She was quite good at cooking for them, with her specialty being a chocolate sheet cake. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband Denny, Ft. Scott; two sons, Phil Quick and wife Jennifer, Ft. Scott, and Rick Quick, Ft. Scott; four grandchildren, Zach Quick, Gabe Quick, Peyton O. Quick, and Taylor Quick Brasfield; three great-grandchildren, Sidney Logan, Layne A. Quick, and Oktavea Brasfield; siblings, Alice Fink, Marilyn Ward, Irmal Hughes, James Endicott, Robert Endicott, and J.W. “Jingles” Endicott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by siblings Lavern Harrison, Mary Lee Heathman, Carol Ybarra, Leona Kramer, and Wayne Endicott.

Dave Nickelson will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 24^th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery.

Nadine Louise “Dee” Moderhak, 88, of Fort Scott, passed away Wednesday morning, April 18, 2018, at the Franklin House.

She was born August 5, 1929, in Denver, Colorado, and was the adopted daughter of Harry K. and Maude Cleva (Hardin) DuVall.

She married Gordon Moderhak May 30, 1964, in Westminster, Colorado. He preceded her in death September 23, 2006.

Dee bequeathed her body to the KU School of Medicine, and she requested that there be no services.

Rosella Page, age 79, formerly of Ft. Harley Lloyd Moss was born May 19, 1927, in Prescott, Kansas to Roy Mark Moss and Elsa Landona Woods Moss and left this life for his heavenly home on April 9, 2018, at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 21 days in Fort Scott, Kansas.

He was married to Lucy Evelyn Cassidy on February 14, 1953, at the Federal Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri. She preceded him in death on February 13, 2014, and also by a brother, Charles Lee Moss, in 1948.

He is survived by a sister, Alice Stewart, of Camp Point, Illinois, one daughter, Carol Reasoner, of Redfield, Kansas, and three sons, Lonnie Moss and his wife, Kathy, of Oronogo, Missouri, Jerry Moss and his wife, Else of Fort Scott, Kansas, and Larry Moss (Jeannie) of Miami, Oklahoma. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Tim White and their sons, Titus, Quintin and Truman of Lubbock, Texas; Christine and Nathan White of Lexington, Kentucky; Daniel and Christina Moss and their son, Ethan, of Carthage, Missouri; Isaiah and Isabell Moss of Fort Scott, Kansas; Jennifer and Ashley Garlick of Florissant, Missouri, Heather Moss of Miami, Oklahoma, and Jerry Moody of Wichita, Kansas.

Harley lived in the Prescott and Pleasanton, Kansas area until he entered the Army in February 1951. He mustered out at Camp Carson, Colorado in November 1952, after having served 10 months in Korea. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Star and the United Nations Service Medal.

After their marriage, Harley and Evelyn made their home in several locations in Bourbon County, Kansas, moving to Devon, Kansas in 1970. Harley spent his life as a farmer and also worked many years as the manager of Monticello Farms.

Services are planned for Friday, April 13, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bethel Community Baptist Church, 1397 155th Street, in Fort Scott, Kansas, with graveside services and military rites to be performed at the Pleasanton Cemetery.

John Wesley Rankin, age 56, a lifetime resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at his home.

He was born February 22, 1962, in Ft. Scott, the son of Marvin and Marilee Wiley Rankin. He graduated from Ft. Scott High School. John enjoyed playing computer games, collecting model cars, shooting pool, and spending time with his dog Matilda.

Surviving is his sister, Jane Rankin, Ft. Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There was cremation.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon, April 17, at the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Ft. Scott.

Jeannie Kay Speer, age 46, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Monday, April 2, 2018, at the Mercy Hospital Emergency Room in Ft. Scott.

She was born August 5, 1971, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Harley Anderson and Rhonda Mitchell Anderson. She married Johnny Speer, Jr on September 7, 1995, at Ft. Scott. Jeannie was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family dearly.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny, of the home and two sons, Ryan Speer and Dustin Speer, both of Ft. Scott. Also surviving is her mother, Rhonda Anderson, of Ft. Scott; a brother, James Anderson and Eva, of Ft. Scott and a sister, Tracy Anderson, of Yates Center, Kansas; her grandfather, Troy Mitchell of Pleasanton, Kansas and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews as well as her in-laws, John and Pam Speer, of Redfield, Kansas and Jonathan Field, of Ft. Scott.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harley Anderson; nephew, William Pulliam; great-nephew, Andrew Aerts and her mother-in-law, Judy Field.

Rev. Mark Demas will conduct funeral services at 11:30 A.M. Thursday, April 5th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery.

Minnie Marie Baucom, age 92, a former resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died March 27, 2018, in Wichita, KS.

She was born March 21, 1926, in Indianapolis, IN, the daughter of Keith and Kathryn Pence Kernodle.  Raised as Minnie Marie, she dropped the Minnie somewhere in her married life and continued as Marie.

She grew up in Indianapolis.  Her parents followed the work lines during the depression, so they were in a lot of states by the time they finally re-settled in Indiana. She lived in Indianapolis when she met the man who would become her husband having been introduced by her older sister. They were married in Phoenix, AZ, with an uncle and sister present.  Lewis and Marie spent their life making a home for five kids and a whole parcel of grandchildren.

Marie taught her children in every sense of the word how to keep the wolf from the door.  Her discipline was swift but always followed by a kiss, a smile and the knowledge that we were loved.

She would try anything once and if it worked she may do it again!  When they were newlyweds, she made a brag she could drive anything on wheels. One day, Lewis needed a driver for his logging truck, so he agreed to let her.  Marie got a little too feisty and a little too fast for a dirt road, so the pole truck started to weave, and she wound up driving through a ditch and cutting a telephone pole in half, but, otherwise unhurt.  Scared, she refused to get back in and he insisted she was going to drive that truck into the timber!  She did finally because there was no one else.  That was the philosophy they lived by: “get back in the saddle”.

She loved to bake.  She would make pies and cakes, and when they lived in the lumber camps, Lewis would come home and find men sitting around his yard waiting for the pies to cool.

Later, Marie kept the home alive and warm while he drove a semi around the country.

Lewis learned early on how to keep peace in the home.  When Marie got mad at him he would go outside and work and by the time he was back in the house she had forgotten why she was mad in the first place, he claimed this practice worked several times for him!

Marie was always there with wisdom and advice for her children, sometimes the wisdom was overshadowed by concern and she would say later “I should have kept my mouth shut!”.  But it was done with love and concern.

As a grandmother, she knew the way to win her grandchildren over.  She made the best cheeseburgers!  And for the sons-in-law, it was fried chicken, cheeseburgers, and pies!  Marie was a great cook, a fact her husband took credit for often.  He loved to remind her, “You couldn’t cook when we got married and I had to teach you how!”

Mama, we miss you

Survivors include two sisters and a brother. Her children include Joseph Baucom (Judi), Kansas City, KS, Dora George (Robert-deceased) in Wichita, KS, JoAnn Scott (John) in Ottawa, KS, and Kathy Swingle in Edgewater, FL; 10 grandchildren; three step-granddaughters; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; mother; and step-father; three sisters; one brother; a daughter; and her husband of 64 years, Lewis Baucom.

Joe Robert Davis, 78, formerly of Fort Scott, passed away Wednesday evening, March 21, 2018, in Grove, Oklahoma.

He was born April 16, 1939, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of John Kenneth and Lucy Margaret (More) Davis. He married Linda Maggard October 29, 1995, in Miami, Oklahoma, and she survives of the home.

In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by his children, Joe Robert Davis, Jr. and wife Debi, of Great Falls, Montana, Kathy Dixon and husband Jim, also of Great Falls, Montana, Debra DeWitt and husband Richard, of Joplin, Missouri, Johnny Ray Davis and wife Terra, of Vaughn, Montana, Lena Cheevers, of Idaho, Mistie Cole and husband Johnny, of Carthage, Missouri, and Travis VanWey and wife Amber, of Grove, Oklahoma; sister, Kay Ballou and husband Larry, brother Kenny Davis, and sister Juanita Sinn, all of Fort Scott; thirteen grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a step-son, Corey VanWey.

Joe Davis, Jr., will conduct services 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2018, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Following cremation, interment will be at a later date at the Fort Scott National Cemetery.
