FSCC nursing program ranks #2 in Kansas

Fort Scott Community College’s nursing program was recently evaluated by NursingExplorer.org. The ranking was based on NCLEX pass rates and net-price as its criterion. NursingExplorer.org gathered data from over 3,000 nursing schools and ranked 1,721 schools across 45 states.

“The formula also gives a 70% weight to NCLEX pass rate and 30% weight to net-price. The result of the calculation is a score between 1 and 100 that reflects the quality of education offered at the school and affordability. If a school has a high NCLEX pass rate and low tuition (or provides a sizeable financial aid), then its ranks will be higher”, says Kim Carlson of NursingExplorer.org.

After the full evaluation of data, FSCC RN program came in at #2 out of the 36 programs in Kansas!

“This is a true testament to our program, faculty, staff, administration, and most importantly our students. While this study only shows one year, our program has consistently provided exceptional education that is affordable. We are also able to provide our students and community with competent, work-ready graduates. We are very thankful to be recognized as the second best nursing program in state of Kansas”, says Director of Nursing at FSCC, Jordan Howard.

Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence

Fort Scott Community College came to life on September 8, 1919 on the second story of the local high school with only 17 students enrolled. Today, in 2019, FSCC averages over 3,000 students enrolled through five locations. FSCC has continuously strived for student success and has proven themselves time and time again. To celebrate this momentous occasion is truly an honor and we hope that all friends of Fort Scott Community College can join us in our celebrations. Below are some of our centennial events. Centennial Kick-Off

When: September 9th

Where: FSCC Cafeteria and Ellis Fine Arts Center

Time: Lunch at 12pm, Assembly 1pm-2pm.

Description: On September 9th, we will start with a FREE lunch at 12pm in the FSCC Cafeteria, followed by an assembly in Ellis Fine Arts Center at 1pm. There will be refreshments, tree dedication, and aerial picture of all that attend.

 

Celebration Dinner-Reservation Required

When: September 20th

Where: River Room ( 3 W. Oak Fort Scott, Ks.)

Time: 6:30pm

Description: On Septemeber 20th, we will have a celebration dinner at the River Room with a ‘Meet & Greet’ starting at 6:30pm, followed by dinner at 7pm. At 8pm, there will be a live band and dancing. Reservations are required and cost is $10.00 per person. Please reserve your spot by September 1st. Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds continue with academic awesomeness! Over 200 students made it on either the Honor Roll list (GPA 3.5-3.74), Vice President’s list (GPA 3.75-3.99), or President’s list (GPA 4.0+) for the spring 2019 semester!

National Recognition For FSCC Athletes

FSCC Athletes are even more awesome in the classroom!

Fort Scott, Ks.—Fort Scott Community College athletes don’t just put in the work on the court/field, they put even more effort in the classroom. FSCC athletes were recognized across the nation for their high GPA’s by the NJCAA.

“At Fort Scott Community College, academics are the top priority for our student-athletes. Our students and coaches work extremely hard throughout the year to ensure that we are succeeding in the classroom as well as on the field/court. I am very proud of this class as they exceeded expectations and have been recognized as 2018-19 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year. Congratulations to all of these Greyhounds for their hard work and dedication” says Tom Havron, VP of Student Life and Athletic Director.

Each team was recognized based on team cumulative GPA and also individually. The NJCAA categorizes each team and individual in three different ways; First Team (4.0GPA), Second Team (3.8-3.99GPA), and Third Team (3.6-3.79GPA). The following team cumulative GPA’s have been finalized and calculated:

  • Volleyball @ 3.66 GPA
  • Baseball @ 3.5 GPA
  • Golf @ 3.36 GPA
  • Softball @ 3.28 GPA

Exhibit Donated to Gordon Parks Museum by Mercy Foundation

Gordon Parks Museum Director Kirk Sharp holds the donated copy of the book,  Half Past Autumn, that was donated by Mercy Hospital Foundation.

The Gordon Parks Museum Foundation received the Gordon Parks Exhibit from the Fort Scott Mercy Hospital Foundation Board on June 20, 2019.

The exhibit includes 67 of Parks’ photos and poems along with a church pew of the AME Church,  a bronze bust of Gordon Parks and the book featuring Parks’ works, Half Past Autumn.

The donated Gordon Parks Exhibit was formerly located at Mercy Hospital-Fort Scott until the hospital closed in December 2018.

Fort Scott native and world-renowned photographer and artist Gordon Parks,  donated the collection of his work to Mercy Hospital-Fort Scott in 2002 to be displayed in honor of his parents, Sarah and Andrew Jackson Parks, according to Kirk Sharp, Gordon Parks Museum Director.

Prairie Land, a photograph by Gordon Parks taken in 1948,  was donated to the museum.

The exhibit pieces will be rotated out periodically for public view and when not in use, will be stored in the museum’s archives.

Blue Dawn, by Parks in 1995, was donated.

“On behalf of the Gordon Parks Museum Foundation Board along with myself, we are extremely beyond excited and greatly honored to receive the collections here at the museum from the Mercy-Fort Scott Foundation Board,” Sharp said.

The Frisco Railway Station, Fort Scott, KS by Parks in 1949 was donated.

“Our goal with some of the collections is to eventually create a community travel exhibit on a temporary loan-out basis for local schools, organizations and businesses for the community to view,” he said.

Work is beginning to create new space to display as much of the exhibit as possible, along with starting a Gordon Parks Travel Community Exhibit, he said.

“The Gordon Parks Museum Foundation would like to give thanks and gratitude to the Mercy-Fort Scott Foundation Board for its great gift to us and the community of Fort Scott,” Sharp said.

The Gordon Parks Museum is located on the campus of Fort Scott Community College, 2108 S. Horton.

The museum is located inside the Ellis Fine Arts Center at FSCC. The museum is funded through donations and through the support of FSCC, Sharp said.

The annual Gordon Parks Celebration is Oct. 3-5, 2019 and will be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Gordon Parks film, The Learning Tree.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees Training
May 20, 2019

PRESENT: John Bartelsmeyer, Jim Fewins, Bernita Hill, Dana McKenney, Liz Meyer, and Robert Nelson

ALSO PRESENT: Alysia Johnston, President, Julie Eichenberger, Acting Board Clerk, faculty, staff, and community members.

Chairman John Bartelsmeyer called the meeting to order at 5:32 pm. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance.

COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC: Community member Richard Clark spoke about his desire to have FSCC start a flight school.

COMMENTS FROM THE CHAIR: Chairman Bartelsmeyer stated that FSCC offers of 40 fields of study, with over 70 courses guaranteed to transfer to any Kansas college or university.

MUSIC PROGRAM UPDATE: Music Instructor Seth Ernst presented an update of the Music Program’s activities over the past year. He also shared videos of recent performances.

CONSENT AGENDA: A motion was made by Hill, seconded by McKenney, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the consent agenda.

ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS:

  1. A motion was made by Fewins, seconded by McKenney, and carried by unanimous vote to approve disposal of culled library books as proposed.
  2. A motion was made by Nelson, seconded by Hill, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the resolution in regard to non-renewal of a non-tenured teacher’s contract.
  3. A motion was made by Meyer, seconded by McKenney, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the purchase of the Hovercam Pilot 3 Plus systems and the necessary accessories from PCM-G for $17,128.00.
  4. A motion was made by Fewins, seconded by Meyer, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the proposal submitted by SG360 for $131,852.40 for the dorm cleaning contract.
  5. A motion was made by Fewins, seconded by Nelson, and carried by unanimous vote to accept the quote from 06Env for approval for removal of the multipurpose floor in Arnold Arena.

Congressman Holds Roundtable At FSCC

Marshall holds a discussion with Bourbon County and Allen County leaders.

On June 14, U.S. Congressman Roger Marshall held a business roundtable at Fort Scott Community College with leaders of the Bourbon and Allen county communities to hear about the concerns, issues and opportunities of both counties.

 

Many of those in attendance cited a lack of skilled workforce and people qualified to fill the jobs available but praised both Fort Scott and Allen County Community Colleges for working together and striving to offer programs that provide training to fill jobs in the region. 

 

The closure of the century-old Fort Scott hospital in 2018 sparked conversation of healthcare in Bourbon County and access to care for residents in the community.

 

Following the roundtable, the Congressman participated in a tour of ReproLogix and learned about the company’s industry-leading work in livestock reproduction.

Burris Hall Expanded at FSCC

Burris Hall on the campus of FSCC is being expanded and the old section updated.

There is construction going on at Fort Scott Community College, 2108 S. Horton this summer.

“There is a new addition to Burris Hall, the ag department,” FSCC President Alysia Johnston said. “They are classrooms mostly, a couple of offices and refurbishing the old section and a new roof. Concrete and some steel (materials) are going up now.”

Steel is being erected for the addition to Burris Hall.

A 3, 800 square foot addition is being added to the agriculture department,  known as Burris Hall, said Cory Spear, superintendent for Crossland Construction.  Crossland Construction of Columbus is the general contractor for the project.

The addition will be approximately 50 foot by 80 foot, and include three offices, a kitchen area and a commons area, he said.

The old segment of the building has been gutted and the offices and classrooms are being updated, Spear said.

The project broke ground on May 20 and will be completed on
August 10,  barring inclement weather, he said.

“We’ve already had two weeks of weather dates since we started,” Spear said.

There are 30 employees working on the construction project, he said.

Crossland Construction, Columbus, is the general contractor for the expansion of Burris Hall.

Since 1975, the FSCC Department of Agriculture has strived to assist students in developing the skills and knowledge necessary to get a job, develop a family business, or transfer to a four-year university. In addition to the celebrated programs with John Deere, Livestock Judging, Meat Judging and Rodeo, the department offers courses on livestock, soil science, animal science, dairy, poultry, agriculture machinery, meat evaluation, equine science, agriculture technology, agribusiness marketing, feed, horse training, plant science, farm and ranch management, horseshoeing, and product marketing.

FSCC Youth Theatre Camp

2019 Youth Theatre Camp

Nearly everyone wants to be a star, right? And, everyone – in his or her own way – can shine brightly.  That’s the central message of D.M. Larson’s “To Be a Star.”

 

The 40-minute play will be presented Aug. 1 and 2 at the Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center as the culminating event of a four-week children’s summer theater camp, conducted by FSCC theater director Allen Twitchell with assistance from FSCC students and staff.

 

The camp is free to all area youth ages 6 to 17 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday beginning with introductions and auditions July 8. Speaking roles are available for 26 young actors, but everyone attending the camp will be utilized.

Enrollment is open by attending the first day of camp July 8. Late enrollees also will be accepted the first week of camp only.

 

In addition to rehearsing the play, camp participants receive instruction in theater basics and the chance to engage in theater exercises.

 

Campers are encouraged to bring snacks and indoor activities for a 15- to 20-minute break time each session.
