LibraryCon event was held on July 20, from 10 am – 2 pm at Fort Scott Public Library.
A number of contests, trivias, workshops, etc. were held but these two contests were among the highlights of the day:

The first, which began at 10:30 am, was Children’s Literature Trivia, led by Susan Messer. Six people participated. The winner, Jayce Warner, received a prize, trophy, and promise of having his photo and name sent to local news outlets.

The second, which began at 11:30 am, was Sports Trivia, led by Professor Allen Twitchell. One person participated. The winner, Brenda Buehler, received the same prizes as the Children’s Lit Trivia contest.

At 12:45 pm, we held our first costume contest. First, six kids in the ages 0-11 years category showed off their costumes.
Our judges: Angela Bin, Allen Twitchell, and Brenda Buehler, chose Madalynn Miner as the Best Costume winner in that category.
Next, three teens in the ages 12-17 years category paraded their costumes before the judges, and Jo Goodbody was declared the winner.
Finally, one adult (also a volunteer earlier in the event), Taylor Qualls, entered and won in the ages 18+ years category.
The judges also awarded a prize to Kaylee Cannon, age 9, for Most Unique Costume, Brooklyn Miner, age 10, for Funniest Costume, and Kimberly McBoon, age 7, for Most Beautiful Costume.

Friday Night Free Concert: Forever Family

Friday evening’s community concert at the Heritage Park Gazebo in downtown Fort Scott, at 1st and Main Street will feature Forever Family. It starts at 7 p.m. Please bring a lawn chair and enjoy the outside concert.

Siblings Jim Dillow,  Ernie Dillow, and, Shirley Showalter started singing together about six years ago.

“They felt God leading them to share the gospel message of hope and love through music and testimony,” Ralph Carlson, event coordinator said.  “Forever Family enjoyed singing at the Gazebo for the last 3-4 years.  In December of 2017 Jim was suddenly taken to his heavenly home.  They discontinued their ministry at that time as the loss of their Godly and inspiring brother was so heartbreaking and overwhelming.  Recently God has opened doors for Ernie and Shirley to sing together again.  Friday evening will be their first full concert since Jim’s passing.  They, along with Jim’s wife, Susan, are dedicating this performance to the memory and legacy of their brother and husband.  They look forward to sharing; knowing God always has a plan for our lives.  Ernie and Shirley will continue to praise God and seek His guidance for future ministry.”

A Memorable Night with Gordon Parks

The Gordon Parks Museum has been such an inspiring addition to Fort Scott Community College and the community. Recently, the Gordon Parks Museum has graciously obtained new additions to the museum from the Mercy Fort Scott Foundation. The new additions will be revealed at the “Night at The Gordon Parks Museum” event on July 25th.

“This fundraiser event will be a very fun evening with great opportunity to see the grand viewing of our newest addition to the museum, the Gordon Parks collections from the Mercy-Fort Scott Foundation Board. Event participants will also be able to enjoy some great music from Blues Guitarist, Lem Sheppard as he will be performing throughout the night. We will have some great silent auctions items and a 50/50 raffle. This fundraiser event is a great way to help support one of our unique treasures we have in our community, the Gordon Parks Museum.” said Kirk Sharp, Executive Director of the Gordon Parks Museum.

Doors will open for the event at 6 pm Thursday night and Lem Sheppard will begin to perform at 6:30 pm. Heavy hors derves will be served and a cash bar will be available. Tickets to the event will be $15 prior to the event that can be purchased at the museum. Tickets will then be $20 at the door the night of the event. For more information, please contact Kirk Sharp at 620.223.2700 ext. 5850 or email him at [email protected]. You can also follow the museum on Facebook.

Help the Fort Scott Youth Team Search the Fort

Fort Scott National Historic Site’s Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is looking for clues during the Fort’s Junior Ranger Day Saturday, July 20, and ‘Texting and Twitter: 1840s style’ 10 am until 3 pm Saturday, July 27. Both Saturdays are for all ages.

Get clues from dragoon or infantry soldiers, a laundress, or other people from the fort as you search the grounds. The interactive Junior Ranger Day programs are separated into age brackets of 3-5, 5-7, and 8-up. We also encourage the young at heart, and older ‘Jr. Rangers’, to try our new ‘Fort Inspector’ program. This program will keep you on your toes and test your I-Spy skills as you search for items throughout the fort.  Upon completion of your Junior Ranger Program, you will be sworn in as an official Junior Ranger and awarded a Junior Ranger badge. This program runs continuously all day.

‘Texting and Twitter: 1840s style’ will give you clues into historic methods of communication including quill pen and ink well letter writing, deciphering messages in Morse code, and composing a ‘tweet’ for a historic news story.

All programs are free and open to the public. To participate, stop by the visitor center.

The site exhibit areas and visitor center are open daily from 8 am -5 pm daily. The park grounds are open daily from ½ hour before sunrise until ½ hour after sunset.

We have presented them for several years now and I am particularly pleased to get them back this year.”

First United Methodist Church and the Fort Scott Chamber of Commerce are jointly sponsoring the concert.

Admission is free.

There will be a free-will offering taken and CDs will be available for purchase.

“Come early as the church will be packed,” Carlson said. “You might consider the balcony for the young and able-bodied as the seating is quite good up there and visibility is also good. Come out Friday night and enjoy this very special concert.”

Blackwood Brothers Quartet Free Concert July 19

The Blackwood Brothers Quartet will give a free concert at the First United Methodist Church, Friday, July 19th, at 7 p.m.

The Blackwood Brothers Quartet was formed in 1934 with brothers Roy, Doyle, James and Roy’s son, RW. RW was killed in a plane crash in 1954 and Roy and Doyle retired from traveling in the late ’50s. However the quartet with James, as the quartet’s leader and spokesman, established a new group of singers who would go on to take Gospel music to new heights. They have traveled and sung in all 50 of the United States, every Canadian province as well as cities in Great Britain, Europe, the Middle East, Northern Africa, South Africa, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand South Korea, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

James, the last surviving member of the original quartet, died in 2002, but his youngest son Billy continues the family tradition of great gospel singing. The group today consists of Billy Blackwood baritone, Wayne Little tenor, Butch Owens bass, and Jonathan Mattingly as lead singer.

A free-will offering will be taken at the end of the concert to help defray the quartet’s travel expenses. For more information call The First United Methodist Church at 620-223-1950 or Don Tucker at 620-223-4617.
