Obituary of William Dee Eastwood

William Dee Eastwood, age 90, a resident of rural Bronson, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2018, at the Guest Home Estates in Ft. Scott, Kansas.
 He was born October 1, 1927, in Allen County, Kansas, the son of Henry Edward Eastwood and Esther Marie Jackson Eastwood.
Dee served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II.
He married Stella Irene Phillips on August 10, 1950.  She preceded him in death on September 3, 1976.
He later married Erma F. Sproat on June 30, 1978.
Dee was a farmer, a cattleman, and an oil producer.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite Consistory and the Mirza Shrine as well as the Iola Elks Lodge.
 
Survivors include his wife, Erma; and three daughters, Linda Mefford and husband, Don, of Mound City, Kansas, Dea Ann Kuhn and husband, Allen, and Cheri Smith and husband, Larry, all of Wichita, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Shon Mefford, Jason Mefford (Cindy), Kelsey Kuhn (Ben), Nick Smith (Christine), Brandon Smith, Adam Smith (Amanda) and Suzie Smith (Anthony) and several great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Shinn and a brother, Wilbur Eastwood.
 
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 1st at the Cheney Witt Bronson Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time on Monday at the chapel.
Private family burial will take place in the Moran Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Bronson Library and may be left in the care of the Cheney Witt Bronson Chapel, P.O. Box 93, Bronson, Kansas 66716.  Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Obituary Of Thelma Vann

Thelma Wynona Vann, age 93, a resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Monday, September 24, 2018, at Medicalodge of Ft. Scott.

She was born April 23, 1925, in Harding, KS, the daughter of Johnson and Agnes Willard Vann. She attended Forest Dale School through 8th grade. She moved from Harding to Ft. Scott in 1952. In 1968, she obtained her GED at Ft. Scott Community College.

Thelma worked for 27 years as a certified Lab Tech for Mercy Hospital. She was a member of Mt. Olive Church of God in Christ, where she served as Treasurer and Sunday school teacher for over 60 years. She took up playing piano for the church at the age of 90. Thelma continued driving until a year ago. She also enjoyed traveling, having visited London and Paris in 1972.

Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Vann, Ft. Scott; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters.

Elder Roger Harris, Pastor Troy Webb, and Co-Pastor Agnes Walton will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 29th, at the Mt. Olive Church of God in Christ.

Private burial will be in the Mapleton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until service time at the Church. Memorials are suggested to Mt. Olive Church of God in Christ and may be left in the care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, 201 S. Main, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Mercy Hosts Mammogram Mania

Extended hours offered on October 11

Have you put off your annual mammogram? Wait no longer. Get your annual screening with the most-advanced breast cancer detection equipment using Mercy’s 3D mammography.

In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the hospital will extend hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for mammogram screenings on Thursday, October 11.

During the extended hours, patients can receive their annual mammogram by either pre-scheduling an appointment or using the walk-in service.

A prescription is not necessary if the patient’s physician is Mercy integrated. Insurance will be billed for the mammogram; however diagnostic mammograms are not included during the special extended hours on October 11.

To schedule a mammogram, call 620-223-7015. Walk-in patients may register at Mercy Hospital Fort Scott’s main registration desk. Please present a copy of the patient’s insurance card, if applicable.

The 3D mammography equipment was purchased and installed in November 2016. The upgrade was made possible by a donation from the Mercy Health Foundation Fort Scott with partial funding provided by the Fort Scott Area Community Foundation (FSACF). FSACF serves to fulfill the philanthropic goals that benefit the common good and improve quality of life by providing leadership and programming that is responsive to the interest and needs of residents of the Fort Scott area.

*If experiencing any breast discomfort or problems, women need to see a physician for an order. Women should refrain from wearing deodorant or powder the day of the mammogram.

Quarterly Downtown Meet & Greet

FORT SCOTT – The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce announces a Quarterly Downtown Meet & Greet will be held Tuesday, October 2nd from 8:30 to 9:30 am at Iron Star Antiques & Such, 3 N. Main St.

The Meet & Greet gatherings are hosted by the Chamber for downtown business owners, representatives and community members to attend to network and share ideas on events, promotions and anything related to downtown. Anyone with an interest in downtown is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

Fort Scott Debate and Speech Students Place First At PHS

Fort Scott High School Debate/Speech students September 2018.
Congratulations to Fort Scott Talking Tigers for taking 1st place in Sweeps at Pittsburg High School this weekend.
In the open division, Dalton Womeldorff and Madi Toth placed 1st with a 5-0 record, Zoe Self and Elizabeth Ngatia placed 2nd with a 5-0 record and Chloe Studyvin and Rebecca Sweyko placed 3rd with a 5-0 record.
In the JV division, Shekhar and Neil Gugnani placed 5th with a 2-3 record and Ash Nave and Jade Russell placed 6th with a 2-3 record.
Novices did not place as individual teams, but they all did an outstanding job at contributing to the team sweeps!

Orange Poppyseed Muffins

 

Morning muffins are often on the breakfast table at Linderhof.     I have one good basic muffin recipe called “Sweet Muffins”. You can add fruit or nuts or flavorings to make different muffins.      And this recipe is almost  as easy as a boxed mix.    Plus the ingredients for the basic muffins are usual in your larder.    This is a version that we like with orange zest, extract and poppyseeds added.

 

ORANGE POPPYSEED MUFFINS

 

1 egg
1 c. milk
¼ c. vegetable oil or melted butter
1 ½ c. flour
½ c. sugar
2 t. Baking powder
½ t. Salt
Zest of 1 orange
1 t. Orange extract
2 T. poppyseeds

 

Glaze (optional):

 

Juice of 1 orange
Enough powdered sugar to make a glaze

 

Heat oven to 400.     Grease bottoms only of 12 regular-size muffin cups with shortening or line with paper baking cups.       In a large bowl, beat egg slightly. Beat in milk and oil until well blended. Add orange zest and orange extract.

 

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in another bowl.      Add to milk, egg mixture. Mix until flour is moistened (batter will be lumpy).  Add poppyseeds and mix again. Spoon into muffin cups.

 

Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.    If baked in greased pan, let stand 5 minutes in the pan, then remove from pan to wire rack.    If baked in paper baking cups, remove immediately from pan to wire rack.

 

Spoon glaze over the muffins about 5 minutes after removing from oven.

 

Muffins are best served warm.
