Curiosity Killed the Cat

I never had a cat while growing up at home, but my best friend Jonita did. Snowball was a beautiful, fluffy white feline with an unusual easy-going personality. One time, the two of us took advantage of Snowball’s pleasant disposition and sucked up his tail into the vacuum cleaner hose! He was totally nonplussed and we laughed and laughed until we cried at our ridiculous ingenuity. In all other aspects, Snowball was the usual cat exploring every nook and cranny, hunting for prey, and investigating anything new and out-of-the-ordinary. A cat’s inquisitive nature can put them in harmful situations. They can even become trapped, with no way out, due to their curiosity.

Curiosity that leads to investigation can be risky for humans too. In today’s world, information and images on any topic are just a click away. As an overall general warning, believers must use extreme caution and godly wisdom regarding what is viewed online.   Adult content is nothing more than a Pandora’s box just waiting to explode on a curious individual. Christ followers have to turn our backs and live differently from what most of our culture is doing. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think” (Romans 12:2 NLT).

The devil works through our mind way before he draws us into the room where he keeps his Devil’s box. He wants nothing more than for us to curiously open the box, which can result in damaging our testimony and ruining how we think. “Don’t give the devil any opportunity to work” (Ephesians 4:27 GW). He’s deceitful and total evil. If you give him an inch, he’ll take a mile. If he’s hitchhiking, and you pick him up, he’ll sit in the driver’s seat and take you further than you want to go. If you play with fire, you’ll eventually get burned. Uncontrolled curiosity will take you on a trip you’ll regret.

Christ followers must use extreme caution and not allow the enemy to steal us blind. “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10 NLT). The enemy will destroy anything that you carelessly hand over to him. This includes, but is not limited to, your witness, integrity, reputation, morality, relationships, and more. Let’s make sure our feet are as sure as a cat’s by keeping them planted on the solid Rock, Jesus.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith” (1 Peter 5:8 NLT). A cat is not the only hunter – the devil is roaming around incessantly looking for prey (Christians). He wants to chew you up and spit you out. Satan is an expert at setting traps for those who are taking catnaps when they should be wide awake and pulling guard duty. God never tells us to do something that we can’t do. So stand against Satan when he tries to get a foothold, then he will never get a stronghold.

“So then, surrender to God. Stand up to the devil and resist him and he will turn and run away from you” (James 4:7 TPT). God gave His followers scriptures to warn us about the devious schemes of the devil. If we try to fight him on our own, we’ll fail. But Apostle Paul tells us to, “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil” (Ephesians 6:10-11 NLT).

The Key: Surrender every “click” to God. Then you’ll stand firm against the Devil’s box.

Minutes — August 10, 2026 Regular Meeting

The Board of Education of Uniontown Unified School District 235, State of Kansas, met in a Regular session on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the UJH/UHS Commons room in Uniontown, Kansas.

Board members present: Rhonda Hoener, Matt Kelly, Brian Stewart, Seth Martin, Troy Couchman, and Kolby Stock.

Board members absent: Mike Mason.

Others present for all or portions of the meeting: Vance Eden, Pam Kimrey, Megan Mason, Robert Onelio, and Susan Harris.

Hoener called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Hoener then led the group in the flag salute. Superintendent Eden read the District Mission Statement. Couchman entered the meeting at 7:10 p.m.

Kelly, seconded by Martin, made a motion to approve the agenda with the amendments: add item A. Flag Salute, change Action Item VI to V and Executive Session — replace Superintendent with Personnel. Motion passed 5-0.

Kelly, seconded by Stock, made a motion to approve the minutes of the July 13, 2026 Regular meeting. Motion passed 5-0.

Martin, seconded by Kelly, made a motion to approve the Consent Agenda. Motion passed 5-0.
A. Approve paying bills in the amount of $742,419.53.

Superintendent Eden gave a preliminary update on the Budget Review, Revenue Neutral and Budget Hearings, and oral reports regarding 2026-2027 Negotiated Agreement, KASB Annual Convention, Strategic Plan, Bond/Capital Projects, and Food Service Procurement Plan.

Megan Mason, Robert Onelio, and Superintendent Eden gave oral Administrative Reports to the board.

Stock, seconded by Couchman, made a motion to approve the 2026-2027 Strategic Plan. Motion passed 5-0.

Drought and Heat Stress Continue to Affect Trees and Shrubs

Rainfall across the Southwind Extension District has been scarce for several weeks. The U.S. Drought Monitor update released on September 3 now places much of our area in a D1 Moderate Drought classification. Unfortunately, long-range forecasts indicate that drought conditions may persist for the foreseeable future. The combination of prolonged heat and limited rainfall is creating challenging conditions for both people and plants.

One group feeling the effects most acutely is newly planted trees and shrubs. When a tree is transplanted, it typically experiences a period known as transplant shock. During this time, the plant is adjusting to its new environment and establishing roots. It is not uncommon for newly planted trees to lose a significant portion of their leaves during the first growing season. This year, however, the combination of drought and extreme heat has intensified that stress, resulting in more severe leaf drop and decline than usual.

While this can be alarming for homeowners, the good news is that many trees experiencing transplant shock will recover and produce new growth the following spring. Even so, newly planted trees and shrubs will require close attention as drought conditions continue.

Watering Recommendations for Newly Planted Trees

To help young trees survive periods of drought:

  • Create a low berm around the planting area to help retain water over the root zone.
  • Water deeply once each week, applying approximately 10 gallons of water per tree.
  • For trees with a trunk diameter greater than 2 inches, apply an additional 10 gallons of water for each inch of trunk diameter.
  • Continue monitoring trees into the fall and winter months. Supplemental watering may still be necessary if dry conditions persist.

Watering Recommendations for Shrubs

Shrubs generally require less water than trees due to their smaller size. Apply enough water to thoroughly moisten the entire root ball to a depth of about 8 inches. Under drought conditions, a deep watering once per week is usually sufficient.

Caring for Established Trees

Mature trees are more drought-tolerant than newly planted trees, but they can still suffer from extended dry periods. Focus on providing deep, thorough watering rather than frequent light applications. Water should penetrate at least 10 inches into the soil.

Be sure to water beyond the drip line of the tree, where most of the absorbing roots are located. Avoid concentrating water directly at the base of the trunk, as this area contains relatively few roots that take up moisture.

A simple way to check watering depth is by inserting a screwdriver or metal rod into the soil. The tool will move easily through moist soil and stop when it reaches dry ground, allowing you to determine whether enough water has been applied.

Jonah runs. God gives him clear direction to speak to the evil Ninevites and turn them to Him instead of the idols they worship. Sounds relatively easy, only this prophet hates the Ninevites and does not want them to repent and change the way they are living. So, Jonah runs 180 degrees in the opposite direction. What Jonah does not know is that if you want to run from God, Satan will always give you a ride. God’s request is a 500-mile trip; Satan’s is 2500 miles. Better than doing something nice for my enemies, Jonah tells himself. Jonah jumps aboard a cargo ship to Tarshish, forgetting that God directs everything, including the weather. His voyage triggers a violent storm at sea, and the sailors, recognizing Jonah as the cause, reluctantly throw him overboard to calm the waters.

Enter the whale, the whale’s belly to be exact, where Jonah finds himself. Get that? Jonah prays to be rescued all right, but he is thinking more like a dinghy or a life jacket or a Carnival cruise liner to pick him up. Instead, God gives him a fish. The slip-and-slide ride down the fish’s throat has to be terrifying, but that’s not the end of the story. Jonah is helpless but not hopeless. Jonah’s problem is God’s provision. Three days he slushes around amidst dead fish and sea algae, ultimately praying and repenting. I love how God waits to move. At the right time, three days after Jonah nose-dives into the fish’s belly, God does His thing. (If “three days” rings a bell, it should. Jonah serves as a foreshadowing for Jesus himself.)

God commands the fish to release Jonah onto dry land, and the prophet heads to Nineveh where he proclaims God’s warning of impending judgment. The people listen and repent, making Jonah do the happy-dance to see God’s mercy first-hand.

Not! Jonah is one cranky character. After all, he deserves God’s mercy because he’s such a holy man, but these Ninevites? They represent your worst enemy on steroids. The pouting prophet retreats to a hillside outside of Nineveh and constructs a simple shelter to observe the city. From there, he says that it would be better to die than to witness what God is doing for his enemies. Human resentment versus divine compassion at its finest.

Some people just don’t get it.

Sure glad I don’t ever fall into that category.

Kansas Flags at Half-Staff for 9/11’s 25th Anniversary

TOPEKA – Today, in accordance with Executive Order #20-30, Governor Laura Kelly has directed flags throughout the State of Kansas be lowered to half-staff from sunup to sundown on Friday, September 11, 2026, to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

“Twenty-five years after the unthinkable tragedy that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans and injured thousands more, we uphold our commitment to remembering those whose lives were permanently altered by a horrific terrorist attack,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “We will never forget the bravery demonstrated that day by so many, including our nation’s first responders, who saved countless lives despite losing more than 400 of their own. Their sacrifice and service will never be forgotten.”
