Tammy Townsend Honored
Tammy Townsend was recently recognized for outstanding work promoting literacy skills at West Bourbon Elementary School, Uniontown.
As part of National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10, the Kansas Reading Roadmap (KRR) honored a teacher at each of their 58 partner schools across the state. The KRR Outstanding Early Literacy Teacher award recognizes a teacher who contributes significantly to early literacy at their school. Teachers are the heart of the educational process.
KRR asked schools to nominate a teacher who has played a critical role in the school to help students succeed in reading. The 58 nominees were honored by KRR within their respective schools during National Teacher Appreciation Week. Those 58 nominees will be considered by KRR for the statewide Outstanding Early Literacy Teacher of the Year honor, to be awarded at the organization’s state conference in August.
“The Reading Roadmap works with teachers both during and after school,” said Andrew Hysell, KRR Director. “Teachers are essential to helping children read to their fullest capability. Kansas has great teachers, and we want to honor them for the work they do to promote literacy.”
Since 2013, KRR has worked with elementary schools and Boys & Girls Clubs across the state, aligning afterschool, summer and family engagement programs with school data. KRR seeks to ensure all students read at grade level upon entering the fourth grade. KRR is a partnership between local schools, the Kansas Technical Assistance System Network (TASN), and the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF).
Beginning in May, Fort Scott Public Library will have a new book club for adults, the Un-Book Club.
We won’t have any reading requirements,” Librarian Lisa Walther said. “This is a club to discuss whatever you want to discuss about books and reading.”
The Un-Book Club will meet on May 21 at 1 p.m. in the Library Event Room.
“Bring your lunch if you’d like to and join us for a casual discussion to share what you’re reading, learn what others are reading, and find inspiration for your future reading,” she said.
Because the Good Ol’ Days Committee is teaming up with both Fort Scott Munitions and the Fort Scott National Historic Site, the parade will be opened to all types of transportation.
Fort Scott Munitions will be hosting a large car & bike show this year, and will be auctioning off a motorcycle for charity.
The Fort plans to do a comparison of ambulances from the early 1900’s through today. They will have a fire truck & ambulance on Skubitz Plaza, an Air Ambulance on parade grounds, possibly a military helicopter, an original ambulance cart from the early 1900’s, re-enactors, and much more.

The Kansas Department of Transportation expresses its appreciation for employees celebrating state years-of-service anniversaries in June. KDOT is proud to acknowledge them for the long-term dedication they have provided to the state of Kansas.

Only Two Weeks Left to Apply to be a Vital Voice for Kansas Water Resources
The Kansas Water Office is currently accepting applications from those who would like to participate as a member of one of the 14 Regional Advisory Committees (RACs) which are established by the Kansas Water Authority (KWA). Interested individuals are encouraged to apply soon as the deadline is only two weeks away.
These committees play a key role in advising the KWA on implementation of each region’s water supply priorities as part of the Kansas Water Vision and the Kansas water planning process as a whole. They help identify and provide input on other emerging water resource related issues and concerns. The committee selection process will ensure all of the water users and interests within the region are represented.
Kansans can have a definite lasting impact on the future of water resources through RAC membership.Interested persons can apply at www.kwo.ks.gov. The application deadline is May 31, 2019.

As the state’s water office, KWO conducts water planning, policy coordination and water marketing as well as facilitates public input throughout the state.

With the 2018-19 school year and basketball season coming to an end, Fort Scott Community College Head Men’s basketball coach Michael Cook is excited about seven freshmen returning for their sophomore season. All seven of the freshman have started at least one or more times and will be a nice mix of talent and experience to go along with the incoming freshman.
The returners will be Kannon Jones, who started at point guard every game and was ranked second in the conference in assists, Craig Jordan who was named second team all-conference and second team all-region, Vinny Barron who missed the first part of the season with a broken finger will return at full strength after starting part-time the last part of the season, Evan Mitchell will be coming back after sitting out the second semester with a broken foot, Kevin Shead and Jesse Lawrence had a solid season after adjusting to the speed of the college game and made contributions toward the final push in conference. Also, coming back after redshirting this season is Dontrell Sanders, Sanders started every game for the Greyhounds the 17-18 season averaging 10 points and 8 rebounds.
“First let me say that I am excited about all seven of these young men returning to play basketball at FSCC, but more importantly they are all on track to graduate on time. Having this many returners will give us great leadership for the incoming freshman and also give us experience for a solid conference push towards the end of the year, FSCC Head Coach Michael Cook said.

Those citizens who desire to serve their communities by serving in local government bodies must file at the Bourbon County Courthouse by June 3 and pay the filing fee or start a petition to get a certain amount of qualified votes to support you. The fees and petition votes vary per community.

The featured group for the Friday Night Free Concert is the St. Martin’s Academy vocal and instrumental ensemble.
The group has an eclectic repertoire of folk, classical and Christian music, said Ralph Carlson, event coordinator.
“The St. Martin’s Academy performed for us last fall and was a real hit with our audience,” Carlson said. “Instruments include guitars and a bagpipe. The show starts at 7 p.m., come early and bring your lawn chairs as seating is limited. In the event of foul weather, the show will be moved to the Common Grounds Coffee Shop.”
