Winners of the Gordon Parks Museum photo contest, sponsored by Merl Humphrey Photography and Don Thompson Images, have been selected. This year’s theme was “Giving a Voice to the Voiceless.”
The contest received 56 entries. First place went to Miles Lynn of Potomac, Md., for “Looking Out.” Second place went to Mia Nance of Wichita, Kan., for “Asking for Help, Helps.” Third place went to Laney Covey of Uniontown, Kan., for “The Music We Pass By.”
Five honorable mentions were named: “Solitude Under the Bridge” by Gary J. Sonnier (Dallas, Texas); “To Be Seen” by Aahliyah Goodridge (Wichita, Kan.); “Voiceless Despair” by Paloma Oropeza (Wichita, Kan.); “Still Here” by Robert D. Little (Stillwater, Okla.); and “Students” by Zoiee Banuelo (Wichita, Kan.).
First, second and third place winners received cash prizes of $200, $75 and $50, respectively.
The photo contest was inspired by Gordon Parks, who used his camera to speak for those unable to speak for themselves. Photographers were invited to capture the essence of the theme.
Judges for the contest were professional photographer Veretta Cobler and established creative director/designer Donna Fumoso.
The photo exhibit will be on display on the Gordon Parks Museum’s Facebook page at facebook.com/fsccgpmuseum and on the museum’s website, gordonparkscenter.org.
