Acapella Choir: Friday Night Free Concert

This Friday Night Concert Series, sponsored by the Fort Scott  Chamber of Commerce,  will feature The Acapella Choir from the Apostolic Christian church, Aleta Banwart director.

The concert is located at First and Main Street and is free to the public.

“The group is popular with our crowd,” Ralph Carlson, event coordinator said. “The crowd sings along as the songs are old familiar hymns. I am looking forward to their appearance.”

In the event of foul weather, the concert will be moved indoors to the Common Grounds Coffee shop, just down the street

Bring chairs as seating is limited.

2019 Youth Theatre Camp

Nearly everyone wants to be a star, right? And, everyone – in his or her own way – can shine brightly.  That’s the central message of D.M. Larson’s “To Be a Star.”

 

The 40-minute play will be presented Aug. 1 and 2 at the Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center as the culminating event of a four-week children’s summer theater camp, conducted by FSCC theater director Allen Twitchell with assistance from FSCC students and staff.

 

The camp is free to all area youth ages 6 to 17 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday beginning with introductions and auditions July 8. Speaking roles are available for 26 young actors, but everyone attending the camp will be utilized.

Enrollment is open by attending the first day of camp July 8. Late enrollees also will be accepted the first week of camp only.

 

In addition to rehearsing the play, camp participants receive instruction in theater basics and the chance to engage in theater exercises.

 

Campers are encouraged to bring snacks and indoor activities for a 15- to 20-minute break time each session.

Friday Night Concert: The Eastsiders

The Friday Night Free Concert is located at Heritage Park Pavillion, First and Main Street.

This Fridays show will feature the Local favorite band “The Eastsiders”, said Ralph Carlson, coordinator.

The band does Christian music, many of the songs are originals written by Lead Singer Danny Brown,” Carlson said. “They also do gospel and classic rock. In addition to Brown, Michael Shead lead guitar, Matt MacFadden on the bass guitar, Rob Hunt, Keyboard and Paul Studyvin on percussion. The crowd loves this band. In the event of rain, we will move to The Common Grounds Coffee Shop. Be sure to bring your lawn Chair as seating is limited. I am really pleased to have this band return for us.”

Good Ol’ Days 2019: What Was Your Special Moment?

The Good Ol’ Days is the annual town-wide gathering, which includes a parade, vendors on Main Street, comedy and music entertainment, a carnival, a fun run/walk and activites at the Fort Scott National Historic Site. It has grown to include the Fort Scott Munitions Customer Appreciation Day Car Show and events.

Several drones were seen overhead during the parade. This drone, at Wall and National Avenue, got caught in some electric wires and fell to the ground barely missing these three small children a few minutes after this photo was taken.

Vendors selling food, goods and services lined North Main Street:

Maci Brock, Fort Scott, gets her face painted by Gaisa Westervelt, Columbus on Friday evening on North Main Street. Vendors selling food, goods and services lined the street Friday evening and Saturday.

The carnival, Red Garter Saloon and shows in Memorial Hall drew parade goers, following the Good Ol’ Days Parade Friday night.

An annual tradition, the Red Garter Saloon was located this year on Skubitz Plaza, just north of Main Street in downtown Fort Scott.

The Jared Daniels Band played Friday evening at Memorial Hall.

FS Adult Summer Reading Challenge June1

The Adult Summer Reading Challenge at Fort Scott Public Library takes place June 1st through August 31st. Participants read books, rate them, and score points. No registration is required. Anyone of any age may participate, but we do ask that books entered be geared toward young adult or adult audiences. If you take part in our Adult Reading Challenge and are eligible to participate in any of our other Summer Reading programs, we encourage you to do so.

The big change this year: after you submit your first book read using our online form (or after you have library staff submit it for you), you can pick up a prize at our downstairs circulation desk. Additionally, we will have monthly challenges for more surprises. Information about the monthly challenges will be available at the library, on our website, and on our Facebook page.

We want to encourage everyone to read and to share their reading interests with others. Every month, we’ll post a list of all the books everyone has read plus the ratings assigned so that everyone will find some new authors or titles to read.

To make things competitive (for those who like a little competition), everyone scores points for each book read, and the person with the most points gets bragging rights for winning the Adult Summer Reading Challenge. We encourage participants to choose a nickname, since the list of participants and their total points will be on our Facebook and web pages.

The Challenge will last from June 1 to August 31. You can submit your entries individually on our website (fortscott.mykansaslibrary.org), or we have a form you can fill out and turn in. Complete information is available at the library and on our website.

Good Ol’ Days Begins Tonight!

The Fun Time Show, Doniphan, MO is located at Third and Main Street this year. The ticket booth is on Third Street.

This evening begins the 39th Annual Good Ol’ Days Festival in downtown Fort Scott.

The Fort Scott Talent Show begins at 6 p.m. at Memorial Hall, Third and National Street, with admission $5, kids five and under are free.

There are 13 contestants that have entered the show, Rhonda Dunn, president of the Good Ol’ Days Committee said at today’s Fort Scott Chamber of Commerce Weekly Coffee at Skubitz Plaza.

The carnival is located at the corner of Third and Main Street and offers nine rides. The cost of an armband that covers all rides for that session is $25.

Hours for the carnival are 7 to 11 p.m., tonight, Thursday, May 30. Fridays and Saturday hours are 6 to 11 p.m.

 

Memorial Hall is where the talent show will be held at 6 p.m. May 30.

The Good Ol’ Days Festival is put together by a committee of volunteers: Rhonda Dunn, Melissa Wise, Kayla Hall, Ally Turvey, Shawn O’Brien, Carl Brenner, Charlotte Thompson, Leah Bowman, Tim Van Hoeke, and Janet Braun.

The committee takes a month off following the festival, then meets together to plan for the next year’s festival in the following months.
