The Friends of Fort Scott National Historic Site Inc. announce a new project to benefit programming at Fort Scott National Historic Site that also honors our country and beautifies our city. The Friend’s U.S. Flag Project provides homeowners and businesses, within the city limits of Fort Scott, the opportunity to fly the Stars and Stripes on five different flag holidays without the hassle of purchasing, erecting, and storing a flag and pole. You don’t even have to remember the holiday!
For $35 annually, the Friends will install a 3’x5′ flag on a 10 foot staff at your home or business on each of the following Flag Holidays in 2019:
Memorial Day, May 27th
Flag Day, June 14th
Fourth of July, July 4th
Labor Day, September 2nd
Veteran’s Day, November 11th
Sign up by October 1, 2019 and you will also get Veteran’s Day 2018 included in the offer–SIX DAYS for the price of FIVE!!! New Children’s Book on Irena Sendler Coming
The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes hosted the weekly coffee for the Fort Scott Chamber of Commerce Sept. 6.
Director Norm Conard said this the 12th year in Fort Scott for the center and the third year in their new facility at the corner of Main and Wall Streets in the historic district.
About 10,000 visitors came to the center last year, he said.
Cathy Werling, an administrative assistant at the center and children’s book author, announced that she is completing a book on Irena Sendler.
“It will open with Megan (Felt, the program director at LMC for Unsung Heroes) and her daughter, Blair,” Werling said. “About Megan going on a trip to do a performance (of Life in a Jar). It tells the story of Irena Sendler. Blair learns Irena was a brave person who stood up for what is right.”
Werling, is the author of Why Did Grandpa Cry? and Why Did Sergeant Stubby Go To War? which also featured unsung hero stories.

Toursim Center Interior Remodeled
An increased focus on tourism for the City of Fort Scott has brought about the renovation of the interior of the Tourism/Chamber of Commerce Center.
The center is located at 231 E. Wall Street.
“Now when someone hits the door, there is someone there to greet them,” Allyson Turvey, convention and group sales said. “It really needed to open up.”
The Chamber section of the building also needed more visibility, so a hole was placed in a wall so the administrative assistant can view the lobby. Lindsay Madison is the executive director of the Chamber, Hannah Reel is a part-time administrative assistant. The Chamber is currently searching for another staff person.
Some fresh paint and a reconfiguring of the display areas were part of the process, as well.
Decorator finishing touches will be provided by area merchants who will allow their furnishings and accessories to be seen and used in the center, according to Turvey.
“Fort Scott tourism is managed by the City of Fort Scott, which administers tourism operations by maximizing the utilization of transient guest tax revenues to advertise and promote Fort Scott lodging, activities, attractions and events, operate a Tourism Center providing concierge services and visitor information, and facilitate any other related programs to attract individuals and groups for overnight stay in the community,” according to the tourism website.

Leadership Program: Leadership Principles In Action
Chamber Accepting Registrations for LEAD Bourbon County Program
FORT SCOTT – The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for participants in the 2018-19 LEAD Bourbon County leadership program; representing Leadership, Education and Development. This program will take place on the second Thursday of each month from September through May.
The program utilizes the curriculum of the Kansas Leadership Center, including facilitated sessions and tours of business and industry to demonstrate the leadership principles in action. Facilitators of LEAD Bourbon County will be Deb Needleman and Robert Uhler.
More detailed information including the registration form, brochure and topic of each session may be found on the Chamber website fortscott.com, under the Chamber tab. Registration is $325 (which includes all meals) plus a $50 materials fee and those interested may register and pay for their own, or often employers will sponsor an employee to participate. Registration forms and fees are requested to be submitted to the Chamber by August 24th.

Fort Scott Town-Wide Garage Sale Sept. 15-16
The Fall Town-Wide Garage Sale is coming up next month, September 14th and 15th.
The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce encourages residents of Fort Scott and Bourbon County to have a sale and start their fall cleaning or make room for something new.
Sales may be registered through the Chamber by 1 pm, Wednesday, September 13th for only $10. The registration fee lists your sale on the official garage sale map and enables the Chamber to advertise the sale throughout the region on the radio, newspaper, social media and the Chamber website.
In addition to the garage sale registration, the Chamber of Commerce is selling twelve advertising spots on the map to businesses and organizations, $25 for a small block and one larger block is available for $40. These blocks of advertisement are a great way for businesses and organizations to promote an upcoming event, discount or offer a coupon to garage sale shoppers.
Garage sale listings and block advertisements may be placed in person at the Chamber office, 8am-5pm Monday through Friday at 231 E. Wall Street or by phone using debit or credit card by calling (620) 223-3566.
