FS Tigers Back In the Pool

Fort Scott Tigers were back in the pool competing in Winfield last Thursday, January 16 and in Osawatomie last night, January 22.
Oliver Witt and Bobby Kemmerer continue to put up competitive times and race against the clock for a state-qualifying time.
In Osawatomie their 200 Free Relay made their laps count and earned a state-qualifying time of 1.38.61.  However, since not all four members of the relay attend the same high school the time will not qualify them for state.  At the state swim meet relays can only contain four members from the same high school.  Since many high school teams co-op for boys swimming, it is not unusual for a relay to swim a qualifying time and not be able to compete in the state meet.
This relay consisted of  Kemmerer and  Witt from Fort Scott High School, Josh Slansky from Chanute High School and Anthony Pousher from Parsons High School.
  The next meet will be at Blue Valley West next Thursday, January 30 at 4:00 p.m.

Oliver Witt:  3rd in the 200 medley relay, 4th in the 200 free relay,  Individual Medley 2nd in heat 8th overall, 6th in the 100 freestyle
Bobby Kemmerer:  3rd in the 200 medley relay, 4th in the 200 free relay, Individual Medley 1st in heat 6th overall (state consideration time), 5th 50 freestyle

FSCC Football Coach Pick Resigns: Nationwide Search Begins For Replacement

Fort Scott Community College has received a letter of resignation from head football coach Kale Pick as he will be seeking other opportunities within the coaching field, according to a press release from Kassie Fugate-Cate.

“FSCC thanks Coach Pick for his leadership that he brought to the institution during his four years on the coaching staff and wish him nothing but the best of luck as he moves forward with his career,” the release.

The institution will begin a nationwide search for a replacement in the coming days.

FSCC Volleyball Nationals Send-off 3:15 p.m. today, Nov. 18

Join us for the first-ever Fort Scott Community College Volleyball Nationals send-off Monday, Nov. 18th at 3:15 p.m. in front of Arnold Arena!

FSCC Volleyball has never made it this far in program history, so join us in celebrating this momentous occasion!

After hosting and winning the 1st District Championship in school history, the volleyball team departs after practice today for the NJCAA Division II National Championship in Charleston, West Virginia.

Though the team is ranked 3rd in the Nation in the last NJCAA poll, the lady Greyhounds are the #4 seed at the National Championship.

The volleyball team heads into Nationals with a record of 30-4 and they square off Thursday at 3:00 pm EST vs 13 seeded Waubonsee Community College.

If they win that match, they will play again at 7:30 pm EST Thursday night. The tournament begins this Thursday, Nov. 21 and ends with the National Championship match on Saturday, Nov. 23rd.

More information on how to watch and follow the volleyball team will be sent out in the next couple of days via the Greyhound Athletics Twitter account and various school social media accounts.

Additionally, the team has already earned multiple postseason honors among the players and their coach:

Freshman outside hitter Juliana Squire earned the Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Conference and First Team All-District.

Sophomore setter Sophie Mader earned Second Team All-Conference and First Team All-District honors.

Freshman Bailee Swanson earned Second Team All-Conference and Second Team All-District honors.

Sophomore libero Abbie Casper earned Honorable Mention All-Conference and Second Team All-District honors.

Freshman middle blocker Abigail Borough earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors.

Lastly, Head Coach Lindsay Hill was named the Conference Coach of the Year, her first such honor after amassing a record of 233-94 (72% winning percentage) in her 9 seasons at Fort Scott CC and 309-174 overall as a collegiate Head Coach.

Please help us in wishing congratulations and best of luck to the coaches and student-athletes of the volleyball program today in front of Arnold Arena at 3:15, come help us send off the team!

Gladbach Classic Dates Change

The Fort Scott Community College Women’s and Men’s basketball team will be hosting the annual Gladbach Classic on November 7-8, 2019 at Arnold Arena.

 

The dates have been changed to November 7 and 8 instead of November 8 and 9 with our Greyhound Volleyball hosting their District Tournament for the first time in volleyball history.

 

The participants in the Gladbach Classic this year on the women’s side are Johnson County, Evangel JV, William Penn JV and Fort Scott Community College.  On the men’s side is Neosho County Community College, Highland County Community College, Northwest Technical College JV and Fort Scott Community College.

 

The dates and times of the Gladbach Classic are as follows:

 

November 7, 2019

2pm- Johnson County vs Evangel JV (Women)

4pm- Highland vs Neosho (Men)

6pm- FSCC vs William Penn JV (Women)

New Golf Course Super Starts In Busy Season

Doug Guns, Woodland Hill Golf Course Superintendent started his job Sept. 16, 2019.

Woodland Hills Golf Course Superintendent Doug Guns is 42 years old and has been in the golf business since he was 19.

“So that’s 23 years,” Guns said. “I was going to college and needed a summer job. A local golf club needed help at the clubhouse. I learned all about the maintenance of the greens.”

He attended  West Virginia University at Parkersburg and Pennsylvania State University.

“I started as an art major and when I got into golf, I switched majors to plant-soil sciences,” Guns said. “The last two courses have been business management classes online from Penn State.”

He started as Woodland Hills Golf Course Superintendent on Sept. 16, after being at Girard’s golf course for four seasons.

 

Doug Guns sits in one of the 30 golf carts available for rent to the public.

His duties include equipment maintenance, irrigation maintenance, supervising personnel, public relations and “Keeping the greens healthy,” he said.

“It’s like an ecosystem, each part of the course has different soil qualities,” Guns said.

Jon Kindlesparger, the current superintendent, is staying on until the end of the year to help the transition, he will then retire.

“It’s nice having his knowledge and experience here,” Guns said.

Guns lives in Girard.

The bulletin board at the Woodland Hills Club House lists the costs of playing golf at the club.

 

Golf carts that can be rented are lined up near the entrance to the Woodland Hills Golf Clubhouse.

Busy Season at Woodland Hills

The next few weeks are busy on the course:

  • The Kruger Golf Classic is Sept. 21, with registration at 7 a.m. It is a four-person scramble. Contact James Wood, 224-9687 or Les Russell, 215-3199.
  • The Special Olympics of Kansas Benefit Golf Scramble is  Sept. 28. The cost is $50 person and is a four-person scramble, sponsored by the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Office. Contact Steve Anthony at 215-2392 or Ben Cole at 223-1440.
  • The Elks Lodge Benefit Tournament is Oct. 5 with an 11 a.m. registration. This is to benefit the Christmas baskets the lodge distributes each year. Cost is $60 per person. Contact the lodge at 223-5821.

The Fort Scott High School, Uniontown High School, and Fort Scott Community College golf teams use the course daily, Shannon O’Neil, clubhouse manager said.

On Oct. 14-15, regional high school tournaments will be held at the course, with the outcome deciding who goes to state in golf, he said.

O’Neil offers lessons in an annual junior golf camp in June and July.

He also does private lessons for both adults and children.

 

There have been two major updates at Woodland Hills in the last few years: a new clubhouse was built in 2015-16, and a new golf cart barn built in 2018.

Standouts for the 7th grade were B team-Graycyn Brown had 10 serves with 8 of those ACE serves. A Team-Hadley Forester-15 aerves with 10 of those ACE serves and one kill-Allie Brown with 2 kills.
8th grade stat leaders for the night were, Carsen Wunderly with 13 aces followed by Lauren Hull with 8 for the A team.  Leaders for the B Team were Brylie Schaub with 13 aces followed by Jadyn Messer with 8 and Hannah Peck with 6 for the night.  During our intersquad “C” match Delaney Faulk led the way with 6 aces followed by Delani Weddle, Lauren Orgen, Anna Hall, and Brittany McClure with 4 aces each.

Arnold Arena Updated Just In Time For Centennial Celebration

Arnold Arena on the campus of Fort Scott Community College recently was renovated in 2019.

Arnold Arena on the campus of Fort Scott Community College has undergone a renovation, replacing the gym floor, installing new bleachers, and purchasing a new scorer’s table.

This project, along with the Burris Hall expansion project, is now completed before the college-wide 100th Anniversary Celebration of FSCC which happens Sept. 20 with a public banquet and Sept. 21 with a tailgate party before the Greyhound football game.

The renovation of Arnold Arena took place because of community feedback.

“We had received numerous complaints over the past few years that there were ‘dead spots’ (on the gym floor) which was difficult to play on,” Tom Havron,  FSCC Vice President of Student Affairs, said. “Additionally, our old wooden bleachers were uncomfortable to our fans and had deteriorated over the years.  We had multiple boards that were broken which were a safety hazard.”

 

“The main benefit of the new floor will be for our student-athletes,” Havron said. ” Not only will the floor help with our recruiting process, but it will also be an advantage to have a high-quality floor to compete on.”

 

The arena renovation project started in early April 2019 and due to some complications, the project was just completed on September 3, 2019.

The floor and the bleachers were budgeted in the general fund, Havron said.

Sign Up For Girls Youth Softball at Momentum Indoor Training Sept. 28

Momentum Indoor Training’s Youth Development Programs has chosen Girls’ Youth Softball to be the first program.

This program is open to any girl aged 7 to high school who would like to play softball at competitive tournaments in the Spring and Summer 2020.

This development program will be focused on creating a positive environment where players can learn not only the skills of the game but the strategy that is involved also.

Team training will begin in November with competitive tournaments beginning in the Spring.

High School aged players will begin their competitive season in June.

Practices will be one to two times a week, depending on the time of year.

Fundraising will be made available to help cover the cost of team membership.

Teams will be determined by the number of athletes who try-out in each age group.

Try-outs will be held Saturday, September 28th at 9 am, 10:30 am, and 12 pm.

Want To Play Some Co-Ed Slow Pitch?

Shawn and Savannah Pritchett are seeking teams for an inaugural slow pitch ball tournament next Saturday as part of the Old Settler’s Picnic festivities in Uniontown.

The game is scheduled for 9 a.m. on August 31 at the Don Dennis Ball Park at West Bourbon Elementary School.

The cost per team is $100, with a deadline of 6 p.m. tomorrow, August 23.
