FSMS Sweeps In Volleyball

The Fort Scott Middle School Tiger Volleyball teams swept Jayhawk Linn at home on Tuesday night.

Standouts for the 7th grade were B team-Graycyn Brown had 10 serves with 8 of those ACE serves. A Team-Hadley Forester-15 aerves with 10 of those ACE serves and one kill-Allie Brown with 2 kills.
8th grade stat leaders for the night were, Carsen Wunderly with 13 aces followed by Lauren Hull with 8 for the A team.  Leaders for the B Team were Brylie Schaub with 13 aces followed by Jadyn Messer with 8 and Hannah Peck with 6 for the night.  During our intersquad “C” match Delaney Faulk led the way with 6 aces followed by Delani Weddle, Lauren Orgen, Anna Hall, and Brittany McClure with 4 aces each.

Arnold Arena Updated Just In Time For Centennial Celebration

Arnold Arena on the campus of Fort Scott Community College recently was renovated in 2019.

Arnold Arena on the campus of Fort Scott Community College has undergone a renovation, replacing the gym floor, installing new bleachers, and purchasing a new scorer’s table.

This project, along with the Burris Hall expansion project, is now completed before the college-wide 100th Anniversary Celebration of FSCC which happens Sept. 20 with a public banquet and Sept. 21 with a tailgate party before the Greyhound football game.

The renovation of Arnold Arena took place because of community feedback.

“We had received numerous complaints over the past few years that there were ‘dead spots’ (on the gym floor) which was difficult to play on,” Tom Havron,  FSCC Vice President of Student Affairs, said. “Additionally, our old wooden bleachers were uncomfortable to our fans and had deteriorated over the years.  We had multiple boards that were broken which were a safety hazard.”

 

“The main benefit of the new floor will be for our student-athletes,” Havron said. ” Not only will the floor help with our recruiting process, but it will also be an advantage to have a high-quality floor to compete on.”

 

The arena renovation project started in early April 2019 and due to some complications, the project was just completed on September 3, 2019.

The floor and the bleachers were budgeted in the general fund, Havron said.

Sign Up For Girls Youth Softball at Momentum Indoor Training Sept. 28

Momentum Indoor Training’s Youth Development Programs has chosen Girls’ Youth Softball to be the first program.

This program is open to any girl aged 7 to high school who would like to play softball at competitive tournaments in the Spring and Summer 2020.

This development program will be focused on creating a positive environment where players can learn not only the skills of the game but the strategy that is involved also.

Team training will begin in November with competitive tournaments beginning in the Spring.

High School aged players will begin their competitive season in June.

Practices will be one to two times a week, depending on the time of year.

Fundraising will be made available to help cover the cost of team membership.

Teams will be determined by the number of athletes who try-out in each age group.

Try-outs will be held Saturday, September 28th at 9 am, 10:30 am, and 12 pm.

Want To Play Some Co-Ed Slow Pitch?

Shawn and Savannah Pritchett are seeking teams for an inaugural slow pitch ball tournament next Saturday as part of the Old Settler’s Picnic festivities in Uniontown.

The game is scheduled for 9 a.m. on August 31 at the Don Dennis Ball Park at West Bourbon Elementary School.

The cost per team is $100, with a deadline of 6 p.m. tomorrow, August 23.

National Recognition For FSCC Athletes

FSCC Athletes are even more awesome in the classroom!

Fort Scott, Ks.—Fort Scott Community College athletes don’t just put in the work on the court/field, they put even more effort in the classroom. FSCC athletes were recognized across the nation for their high GPA’s by the NJCAA.

“At Fort Scott Community College, academics are the top priority for our student-athletes. Our students and coaches work extremely hard throughout the year to ensure that we are succeeding in the classroom as well as on the field/court. I am very proud of this class as they exceeded expectations and have been recognized as 2018-19 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year. Congratulations to all of these Greyhounds for their hard work and dedication” says Tom Havron, VP of Student Life and Athletic Director.

Each team was recognized based on team cumulative GPA and also individually. The NJCAA categorizes each team and individual in three different ways; First Team (4.0GPA), Second Team (3.8-3.99GPA), and Third Team (3.6-3.79GPA). The following team cumulative GPA’s have been finalized and calculated:

  • Volleyball @ 3.66 GPA
  • Baseball @ 3.5 GPA
  • Golf @ 3.36 GPA
  • Softball @ 3.28 GPA

American Legion in Fort Scott has a goal to build an American Legion baseball program based on integrity and develop young men of character for our community and our nation.

National Bike Race Coming To Fort Scott

History
RAAM is an annual event that has been held every year since 1982. Cyclists from around the world compete to see who will be the fastest to pedal 3,000 miles coast-to-coast across the USA. The clock never stops during the race. There are solo and team divisions. Each participant is required to have a support crew. The winning solo riders will cross the country in less than 9 days, cycling over 300 miles per day, and teams will do it in 6 days, riding over 500 miles per day.

The Route
RAAM starts in Oceanside, California and finishes in Annapolis, Maryland. The route passes through 12 states: California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland

American Legion Baseball Meeting Tonight June 4

Due to the herculean efforts of Vice Commander Earl Adams, Post 25 will be able to host an American Legion Baseball team this year.

There is a Legion baseball team meeting for players and one parent on Tuesday, June 4. @ 6:30 pm.  All interested players must bring a copy of their driver’s license or learner’s permit OR a copy of their birth certificate with the official state seal on it or a notarized copy. Our team will consist of Fort Scott students who are between the ages of 15 – 19.

It has been several years since the Fort Scott American Legion hosted a Legion baseball team.

Please consider a financial donation to your Fort Scott American Legion Baseball team. The team needs uniforms and equipment, plus money is needed to cover operating expenses such as insurance, umpires and food and lodging expenses when these boys go to other communities to represent Fort Scott in American Legion Baseball.

Fort Scott American Legion Post 25 is registered as a nonprofit entity with the IRS and donations to Post 25 are tax exempt. A tax exempt receipt will be provided upon request.

3rd St. and Wall St. this Wednesday, May 22nd.
The bus will leave the LaRoche Complex
at 9:30am and travel 69 Highway to 3rd St.,
down Main St. to Wall St. and then take Wall St. back to the highway.
This team will be representing our community, so let’s send them off in style!
NOTE:
A limited number of signs and noisemakers will be available at the Heritage Park Pavilion @ 1st & Main St. starting at 9am. We encourage any businesses along the route to show their Tiger Pride as well by decorating their windows, hanging a FS Tiger flag, etc.

Woodland Hills: One of Top Ten In Kansas

Fort Scott’s publicly owned golf course is one of the best in Kansas.

“It’s one of the top ten in the state,” Fort Scott’s Community Development Director Robert Uhler told the weekly Chamber of Commerce Coffee attendees on May 9 at Woodland Hills Golf Course.

Golf carts are lined up in front of the Woodland Hills Golf Course, ready for rental. There are 30 carts for public rental, Clubhouse Manager Shannon O’Neil said.

Woodland Hills Golf Course is busy with community events.

“The next Saturday’s are busy,” Clubhouse Manager Shannon O’Neil told the coffee attendees, “The Kiwanis Golf Tournament is May 18, there is a three-person scramble on Memorial Day weekend May 25 and a Tiger Baseball Fundraiser on June 1.” The Kiwanis fundraiser is for student scholarships and the Tiger baseball fundraiser benefits the local baseball team, he said.

O’Neil is also the head golf professional at the course.

An introductory course for beginning golfers ages 8-13 begins Tuesday, June 11, for six weeks of one-hour group lessons.

Coffee attendee, Fort Scott Community College President Alysia Johnston said the college has a great partnership with the golf course. This partnership has allowed two girls to hone their skills to excel at the sport.

“In our first year with a golf team, two girls have qualified for nationals,” she said.

City Manager Dave Martin commended  Golf Course Superintendent Jon Kindlesparger for his work on upgrading and maintaining the picturesque course.

“We hired him when the course was in disrepair,” Martin said. “Jon, with his experience has done a lot of great work out here.”

Seven Returning FSCC Basketball Players

With the 2018-19 school year and basketball season coming to an end, Fort Scott Community College Head Men’s basketball coach Michael Cook is excited about seven freshmen returning for their sophomore season. All seven of the freshman have started at least one or more times and will be a nice mix of talent and experience to go along with the incoming freshman.

The returners will be Kannon Jones, who started at point guard every game and was ranked second in the conference in assists, Craig Jordan who was named second team all-conference and second team all-region, Vinny Barron who missed the first part of the season with a broken finger will return at full strength after starting part-time the last part of the season, Evan Mitchell will be coming back after sitting out the second semester with a broken foot, Kevin Shead and Jesse Lawrence had a solid season after adjusting to the speed of the college game and made contributions toward the final push in conference. Also, coming back after redshirting this season is Dontrell Sanders, Sanders started every game for the Greyhounds the 17-18 season averaging 10 points and 8 rebounds.

“First let me say that I am excited about all seven of these young men returning to play basketball at FSCC, but more importantly they are all on track to graduate on time. Having this many returners will give us great leadership for the incoming freshman and also give us experience for a solid conference push towards the end of the year, FSCC Head Coach Michael Cook said.
