After being a part of Fort Scott since 2000, the Woods Supermarket is scheduled to close its doors the first week of November.

The grocery store announced the news to the community Wednesday and is now holding a closeout sale in order to get rid of as many items as they can prior to their November 5, closing date.

Woods began in 1947 in Long Lane, Mo., with the purchase of a small country general store by Don and Bertha Woods, but has since expanded to include about 12 locations, with Fort Scott being the only one in Kansas while the others are located in Missouri.

  1. So sad. I am not Wal-mart shopper. I will miss the gas prices and the people besides they always carried what I wanted.

  2. Our town needs more than one grocery store on the east side and Walmart on the west side. We need someone to move into the Woods location.

  3. I am a former Fort Scott Woods Associate from dates 2001-2006. It is really unfortunate and sad that Woods is closing its doors in a couple weeks. When I used to work there we used to always predict the IGA downtown to go long before Woods would. Woods always had great weekly specials, and great customer service. God Bless all the Associates that currently working there and have to transition to another Woods or another source of employment.

    1. That’s so sad I started my woods career in 2002 and i loved working for them. My mom has worked for them many many years and was the inspiration for me wanting to work for them. This breaks my heart that they are closing

      1. I agree with you Holly. They did pretty good for 16 years though ! I’m also surprised as well that the Great Mall of the Great Plains in Olathe is not only closed but they will demolishing it within the next six months ! šŸ™

  4. I now live in Chillicothe Mo. For a long time we were down two stores (HyVee and Wal-Mart). We finally got another store in after two years. Hopefully the same will happen to you all. Good luck.
