Obituary of Anna Rose

Anna Marie Rose, 100, of Uniontown, Kansas, passed away, Monday evening, January 3, 2022, at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Fort Scott.  She was born December 23, 1921, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the daughter of Rupert Marcus and Clara Alma (Price) Warren.

 

At the age of five, she and her family moved from Muskogee to McCune, Kansas where she attended Idell Grade School and McCune High School, graduating in 1941. After graduating she attended the Coffeyville School of Cosmetology. She had her own business for a short time in McCune.

 

She married Floyd Rose on February 2, 1944, and lived in the Girard, Kansas area for a short time before moving to the Uniontown area. She was a farmer’s wife for many years. In 1968 she went to work at the IMP Boat Plant where she was an upholsterer for ten years. After retiring from there she started sewing for other people and did alterations for the Boot Jack in Fort Scott. She altered wedding dresses and made bride’s maid dresses for many people in Fort Scott and the surrounding area. In her later years she made quilts and hand quilted them. She was very proud of the many quilts she made.

 

Anna was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Uniontown. For many years she was an active member of the ABW and held office in the District Organization. She was a member of the Uniontown Red Hat Society for many years. They ventured out to many places of interest and enjoyed restaurants in the surrounding area for their monthly excursions. She always enjoyed the luncheons and visits with friends.

 

Anna is survived by son, Merle Rose and wife Betty of Uniontown, daughter Linda Inkelaar of Derby, Kansas, daughter Carol Cameron and husband Mike of Muskegon, Michigan; eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and fifteen great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Floyd, son Gary, and infant son, an infant daughter, two grandsons, Jeff and Greg Shriver, brothers, Bill and George Warren, and son-in-law, Leo Inkelaar.

 

Rev. Marty DeWitt will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown with burial following in the Uniontown Cemetery, under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2022, at the Funeral Home. Obituary of Melissa Hays-Mitchell

Melissa Lynn Hays-Mitchell, 48, left our world unexpectedly on Dec 21, 2021.

Melissa was born on July 4, 1973, to James Hays and Joann Sipe Hays in Fort Scott, Kansas.

She graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1991, and continued her education at Pittsburg State University, earning her bachelor’s degree in social work.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents.

Melissa’s beloved spouse, Dean Zimmerman also left our world on December 21, 2021. Continued prayers for both families are appreciated.

She was previously married to Jerald Mitchell (Fort Scott) for 18 years, they raised three children together. Dayton, Dawson, and Katelynn Mitchell were always their mother’s world. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers while they navigate through this difficult time.

Left behind are her three children: Dayton Hays (Jessica Powers) Mitchell, Dawson James Mitchell, and Katelynn (Taylor Harrison) Mitchell.  She also leaves behind a brother Jason Hays, and sister Sheila Hixon (Robert Hixon).

Besides her own children, Melissa’s pride and joy lay with her grandchildren. This Mimi never missed a beat and will be missed by them all: Bryant, Bentley, Kinsley, Hayden, Brayden, Kase, and Dylynn. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

As a caring mother, wife, and grandmother, Melissa never knew a stranger and lived on her own terms. Her funny wit, intelligent comments, and unique personality are what those who knew her will miss the most. She was one of a kind, unapologetically being herself when it came to what she believed in.

A celebration of Melissa’s life will be at Buck Run Community Center on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at noon. Please feel free to stop by and share your memories of Melissa with her family and close friends.

 

Obituary of Carol Jean Carter

Carol Jean Carter, 77, of Fort Scott Kansas passed away on January 1, 2022, in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. Carol was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on April 3, 1944, to George and Sophia Sinn in Fort Scott Kansas.

 

Carol was raised on a small farm outside of Fort Scott. She graduated from Fort Scott High school and was married, living in Wichita, Kansas, where she started her family, raising her three children. She lived in Indiana for a few years but moved back to Wichita.  Her dream, however, was always to move back home to Fort Scott to be closer to her church and family which she fulfilled in the fall of 2000. She bought a small piece of land, built a house and small barn for her grandchildren to play in when visiting. Carol enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, gardening, and was an avid quilter. In 2014 she was diagnosed with dementia and ultimately moved to Minnesota and then Illinois to be closer to family.  

Carol is survived by her three children Sheryl (Dale) Toews; Tim (Michelle) Carter; and Darren (Michele) Carter; a brother Delbert Sinn; a sister Joyce Sinn; seven grandchildren, Blake and Chelsea Toews, Kara and Keith Carter, Cole, Mackenzie, and Tyler Carter; and former spouse, Earl Carter.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Don, Dick, and Kenny Sinn.

Ministers Larry Bahr and Jeff Fischer will officiate funeral services for Carol at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2022, at the Apostolic Christian Church with burial following at the Evergreen Cemetery, under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening January 6, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Obituary of Larry Neville

Larry Merle Neville, 69, passed away in Nixa, Missouri late Thursday evening, December 30, 2021.

He was born on July 19th, 1952 in Girard, Kansas; the son of Merle Eugene and Jessie Mae (Ausemus) Neville.

Larry graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1970. While attending classes at FSCC, he met and soon married his devoted wife Linda. They had 47 wonderful years of marriage.

He was “Dad” to four children as well as “Papa” to eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Larry was extremely committed and thorough in his work.  Over the years, he had many places of employment including Merle’s Service Station, Boone and Dauben’s, Dorwin Jackson Drilling Company, Bruce’s Monuments, Dayco/Carlisle Products, and Dale Jackson Oil Production Company.

He was also very giving of his time and devoted to community service. His activities included the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, Bronson Ruritan and Ball Association, City Library, Mayor, and City Council Member, School Board Member/President for Uniontown USD 235, as well as accounting work for the cities of Uniontown and Bronson.

While he lived the majority of his life in Southeast Kansas, he had spent the past eight years living in Nixa close to his family.

Larry is survived by his wife Linda, mother Jessie Mae, mother-in-law Edna Marie, brothers Jerry and David, and sister Julie; four children:  Darcy and husband Doug Sinn, Chelle and husband CJ Lear, Levi and wife Joey, Jeremy and wife Megan; Grandchildren Skyler, Drew, Danielle, Austin, Mercedes, Kinley, Ansley, and Ruth; Great Grandchildren Serenity, Mikenzi, Linkin, and Oakley; several cousins, nephews, and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Merle Neville; father-in-law, Dorwin Jackson; and brother-in-law, Gary Jackson.

Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Marty DeWitt of First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown, Kansas on Saturday, January 8th, 2022 at 1 pm.

The family invites all to fellowship at a reception at the church immediately following the service.

Larry will be laid to rest at the Turkey Creek Cemetery, north of Uniontown, at 4 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the care of Linda Neville for incurred medical expenses.

Obituary of Jimmy Dale Austin

Jimmy Dale Austin, age 82, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died January 2, 2022, at his home. He was born October 2, 1939, on the family farm in Walker, MO, the son of Tommy and Hattie Horning Austin.

He married Betty Jean Townley on August 2, 1959, in Ft. Scott. She preceded him in death on March 4, 2015. Dale worked for the City of Ft. Scott Parks Department as caretaker of Main St. Park before moving to the Street Department.

 He then became self-employed with his own dump truck, hauling, and backhoe service. He enjoyed riding horses.

Dale was a hard-working family man. He would do anything for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Tammy Winter-Heimsoth and husband Kirby; granddaughter Casey Winter-Fogle and husband John and great-grandson Michael, granddaughter Amber Ramirez and husband Daniel and great-grandchildren Jaydon, Zac, Elian, and Izaiah; brother Henry Jay Austin, sister Hazel Marie Green; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is close family friend Blanche Williams.

Beside his wife, Dale was preceded in death by a daughter Janet Mason, two brothers, Stanley Lee and Charles Clinton Austin, and his parents.

Evangelist Bill Downy will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Friday, January 7th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:00 prior to the service.

Obituary of Coleene Lockwood

Dorothy Coleene Lockwood, age 90, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2022, at the Presbyterian Village in Ft. Scott.

She was born April 1, 1931, in Hammond, Oklahoma, the daughter of Ross Ball and Sally Allen Ball.

Following the death of her mother, Coleene, moved to Ft. Scott to live with her sister and brother-in-law. This is where she caught the eye of Grant Lockwood, the young man who lived across the road.

Coleene and Grant were married on April 6, 1951, at Bentonville, Arkansas, while Grant was on leave from the Army. In 1953, following Grant’s service during the Korean Conflict, Grant and Coleene reopened Lockwood Motor Supply. They continued to work side by side at the family business until Grant’s health forced their retirement. Grant passed away on January 17, 1998.

Coleene enjoyed mowing and keeping up her yard, as well as listening to music and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Community Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Lockwood and wife, Joyce and Carey Lockwood and wife, Connie, all of Ft. Scott; seven grandchildren, Jack Lockwood (Stephanie), of Girard, Kansas, Jeremy Lockwood, of Ft. Scott, Michael Lockwood (Tanya) also of Ft. Scott and Ashley Gledhill (Matt) of Lansing, Kansas, Kimberly Pierce (Lee) of Olathe, Kansas, Timothy Lockwood (Maria) also of Olathe and Stacy Lockwood of Tucson, Arizona and twelve great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Keith Ball.

In addition to her husband, Coleene was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct funeral services at 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 7th at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Obituary of Edward Keating

Edward L. Keating, age 74, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Saturday, January 1, 2022, at his home from complications of COPD and lifelong lung problems. He was born December 17, 1947, in Mound City, KS, the son of Thomas L. and Lois Casteel Keating.

Survivors include his wife Deborah of 44 years; two brothers, Jerrold Keating (Pam), Forney, TX, and David Keating (Dawn), Springfield, MO; Also surviving are several best friends, Rob Begley (Terri), Paul Modlin (Angie & Britney), Jack Vosberg (Judy), Anh P. Tran (Cathy), Dr. Mark Yagan, Chic and Jan, Glen Logan (Laura), and Brother Thomas Sullivan, OSB; as well as other family in-laws, aunts and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his step-father John R. (Bud) Harrison; his parents Thomas and Lois; and grandparents Lawrence and Mary Keating and Lester and Zelma Casteel.

Private family burial will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

A public Memorial Mass will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers and donations, Ed wished people to take their loved one out to a favorite restaurant in his memory.

Obituary of Michael Hansen

Michael L. Hansen, 66, of Fort Scott, Kansas, passed away Friday afternoon December 24, 2021, at Via Christi Pittsburg. He was born in Wakefield, Nebraska, on January 19, 1955, the son of Louie M. and Edna M. (Baker) Hansen.  He married Karen Roth on July 17, 1982, in Parkston, South Dakota, and she survives of the home. They have two sons, Robert Hansen, of Fort Scott, and Nicholas Hansen, also of the home, who survive, as well as cousins, nephews, and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Lynnett Hansen, and brother-in-law Ronald Roth.

Mike served twenty-two and half years in the Army Nation Guard. He served as a high school construction trades teacher for USD 250 and USD 234 until his retirement. After Mike’s retirement from the national guard, he and his wife operated Hansen Honey-do-Repairs until his passing. He enjoyed participating in and watching tractor pulls, but most of all he loved being with his family and friends. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Fort Scott, the American Legion Post #25, the American Legion Post #25 Color Guard, and the Bourbon County Garden Tractor Pullers Association.

The Family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm January 7, 2022, at the Trinity Lutheran Church at 2824 S. Horton St., Fort Scott, Kansas. Pastor Mike Apfel will officiate funeral services at 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 8, 2022, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to either the American Legion Post #25, The American Legion Post #25 Color Guard, the American Heart Association, or Trinity Lutheran Church, and may be left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15W. Obituary of Nichole Hull

Nichole “Colie” Kai Hull, loving mother, wife, daughter, and sister left this world suddenly Tuesday morning December 28, 2021, at the very young age of 30. She was born October 31, 1991, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of Richard Lee Webb and Mickie Roiann Phillips.

Her father later married her “Bonus” mom Desa Rae Webb November 19, 2016.

After graduating from High School, Colie couldn’t decide what or where her future should begin, so she decided to go to Job Corp in Manhattan, Kansas. Little did she know she would meet her soul mate there. She and Justin Frank Hull would soon fall madly in love and marry on April 8, 2011, in Miami, Oklahoma. Together they had one little angel, Serenity Nevaeh Hull on January 17, 2013.

Nichole loved being a mother and wife more than anything in this world. She loved spending time with family and friends gathered around a fire laughing and making memories that last a lifetime. When she loved, she loved with her heart and soul. She will forever be deeply missed.

In addition to her husband Justin, Nichole is also survived by her daughter, Serenity Nevaeh Hull, of the home; her parents and her “Bonus” mom, Desa Rae Webb; grandparents, Alan David Webb, David Joe Wyatt, and Betty Louise McCreedy; three brothers, Caleb Alan Webb, Jace Zachary Webb, and Jacob David Arnold, all of Fort Scott; six sisters, Kyla Leigh Phelps of Nevada, Missouri, Elizabeth Ilo Madden, of Springfield, Missouri, Abbigail Kirsten Marie Webb, and Katlyn Louise Webb, both of Fort Scott.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Hannah Joe Webb, her paternal grandmother Sharon Sue Webb, and paternal grandfather Michael Eugene Garwood.

Billie Phillips will conduct memorial services at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 3, 2022, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2022, at the funeral home.

Obituary of Rhonda Tinkey

Rhonda Kay Tinkey, age 52, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Friday, December 24, 2021, at the Via Christi Emergency Room in Ft. Scott.

She was born July 12, 1969, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Lowell William Beerbower and Donna Kay Lawson Beerbower.

In earlier years, Rhonda worked at Larry’s Carry Out. Later she was employed by Jump Start and Peerless.

She married Preston Tinkey on May 10, 1991. When her boys were younger, Rhonda was actively involved with the Boy Scouts where she served as Den Mother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and taking trips to the casinos.

Survivors include her husband, Preston, of the home; three sons, L.W. Beerbower of Ft. Scott, Kyle Tinkey (Katie Harper), also of Ft. Scott and Jessie Tinkey of West Virginia and ten grandchildren, Savannah, Charlotte, Jackson, Alexander, Keira, Kaizleigh, Kiaya, Kazmer, Cheyanne and Shaynna. Also surviving are two brothers, David Beerbower (Donna Jo) of Ft. Scott and Allen Beerbower (Kim), of Redfield, Kansas.

Rhonda was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Ashley and two brothers, Troy and Gary Beerbower.

There was cremation. A memorial service with burial in the Marmaton Cemetery will take place at a later date.

Obituary of Elfie Marie Schnichels

Elfie Marie Schnichels, age 95, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at Guest Home Estates in Ft. Scott. She was born July 27, 1926, in Shidler, OK, the daughter of Garrett Lawrence Schnichels and Lillian Oriole Reasoner.

She graduated from Fort Scott High School, then attended Fort Scott Community College, obtaining 18 credit hours. She then taught school in Bourbon County for three years.

Elfie then decided to become a missionary and attended one year of Bible College in Fort Worth, TX. She then went to Old Mexico as a missionary where she served as a teacher and worked with needy children. While in Mexico she adopted four children from the children’s home in which she worked.

After returning to the United States, she settled again in Bourbon County, KS with her children, Paul David, Mark Wayne, Linda Kathleen, and Rose Maria. She has 16 grandchildren. She had 23 great-grandchildren with 19 still living. She also has a least one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

Elfie lived at 1549 Key Road for many years where her children grew up. She dearly loved her flowers, plants, and even some gardening. While raising her children, she worked at Western Insurance Company for 8 years. Following that she worked at Mercy Hospital for 13 years.

She loved to do crafts and would make angels out of paper to occupy her time and give her a purpose. She will be sorely missed by many.

Only her daughters are still living, Linda Wurtz lives in Mesa AZ with her husband. Her younger daughter, Rose lives near Des Moines, IA, with three daughters that live nearby. She was preceded in death by her sons Paul David and Mark Wayne Schnichels.

Rev. Larry Stevicks will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 4th, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Burial will follow in the Marmaton Cemetery.
