Ellise Davis, age 98, a resident of Chanute, Kansas, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022, at the Wesley Woodlawn Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

She was born Elane Catherina Thompson, on October 27, 1923, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Cornelius Thompson and Juanita Hughes. At the age of three, she went to live with Rev. Allen Jones and his wife, Mary.  Rev. Jones was a deacon at St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church in St. Louis.  She spent many hours helping him around the church and earned the nickname “Little Church Mouse.”  During this time, she also played on the church piano, a talent she enjoyed throughout her life.

Her name was later changed to Ellise, but her friends called her Tootsie.  She received her early education in St. Louis schools and went on to graduate from the Stowe Teacher’s College also in St. Louis.  She met Paul Davis, who was an usher at the church, and they were joined in marriage on April 18, 1942, in Union, MO.  Ellise gave birth to nine children.

Ellise moved the family to Ft. Scott, Kansas and later was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1969. She continued her education as a non-traditional student and graduated from Ft. Scott Junior College.

She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in social work from Pittsburg State University, graduating in 1972, at the age of 49.  Ellise worked as a social worker for the Labette County SRS Office in Parsons, Kansas for twenty-three years, retiring in 1995 at the age of 72.

Ellise grew up through the Great Depression, and despite many hardships, managed to get an education and raise her large family as a single parent. She also learned to drive a stick-shift in her 40’s. She will be remembered as a member of the Greatest Generation.

Survivors include six children, Saundra Woolfolk of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Paulette Mosbey of Kansas City, Missouri, Joyce Johnson (Woody) of Wichita, Kansas, Ralph Davis (Tänya) of Chanute, Kansas, Kevin Davis of Manhattan, Kansas and Deborah Goins (Wayne), also of Manhattan, Kansas.  Also surviving are eighteen grandchildren, Craig, Kirk, Mitchell, Michael, Mechelle, Gary Jr., Maurice, Juanette, Kimberly, Ray Jr., Chelsea, Monica, Tyrone, Kiesha, Shenee, Alyssa, Sea and Jasmine; forty-two great-grandchildren, twenty-three great-great-grandchildren and two great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, three children, Allen, Gary and Diane; four grandchildren, Dale, Keishia, Detrick, and Danicka; one great-granddaughter, Danielle; and a foster-sister, Fannie Mae.

Private burial will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Virginia Lee Warren, age 79, of Independence, Missouri passed away May 8, 2022, at The Villages of Jackson Creek Memory Care.

She was born December 13, 1942, in Mapleton, KS to Dorothy (Schmitz) Chapman and James Chapman. She grew up in Fort Scott, KS, graduating from Fort Scott High School in 1960 and always considered Fort Scott her “home”.

 

Virginia spent much of her childhood battling polio she contracted at 18 months old, undergoing numerous surgeries and treatments at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She learned to walk using a built-up shoe and braces and never let it slow her down. She was named Queen of Dimes at Fort Scott High School working to raise money for the March of Dimes.

After graduation, she worked primarily as a keypunch operator and data entry clerk at Western Electric/AT&T until taking her retirement in 2000.

After retiring, she enjoyed volunteering at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, her weekly grocery/shopping trips with her sister and Friday morning breakfasts with any family member who could join in. She was notorious for not being able to pass up a deal at Cargo Largo and was quick to tell you about her latest find. She also took pride in her large video collection, especially her vast library of John Wayne movies (her absolute favorite) and could always let you know when the John Wayne marathons were playing on television. She was also excited to finally go see “The Faces” of Mount Rushmore, the mountains of Colorado, and the lights of Las Vegas.

 

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, David (Laura) Warren of Blue Springs, Jerry (Sue) Warren of Independence and Jonell (Carter) Craig of Blue Springs, 4 grandchildren, Trevor Warren, Alyssa Warren, Sawyer Warren, and Ashton Warren and 3 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Frances Richey (Independence), James (Elizabeth) Chapman (Independence), Paula Graham (Kansas City), Emmett (Doylene) Chapman (Fort Scott) and Joe Chapman (Independence). She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents James and Dorothy Chapman, brother, Paul Chapman, and brother-in-law Ricky Graham.

 

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 11^th from 5-7pm with service to follow at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 1200 SW Blue Parkway, Lee’s Summit, MO.

Graveside service and burial will take place Thursday, May 12^th at 11am, Memory Gardens Cemetery, Fort Scott, KS.

Donald Dwight Daily, age 64, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Sunday, May 1, 2022, at his home.  He was born September 18, 1957, in Clearwater, FL, the son of Harry and Gwendolyn Martin Daily.

Donald worked as an over the road truck driver for most of his life.

He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Ft. Scott.

Survivors include two sons, Tanner Daily, Iola, KS, and Lakota Daily, Ft. Scott, KS; a daughter, Rebekah Daily, Sedalia, MO; two stepsons, Jerry Foss, Tillamook, OR, and Robert Johnson, OR; two stepdaughters, Bobbi Grey, Towanda, KS, and Wanda Patton, Ft. Scott, KS; a brother, Dio Daily, Springfield, MO; a sister, Barbara Daily, Tahlequah, OK; 21 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Daily, and his parents.

 

There was cremation.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, May 12^th, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Ft. Scott, KS.

Burial will take place at a later date in Drumright, OK.

Dorothy Mae Hofman, age 84, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was born June 1, 1937, at the family farm near Fulton, Kansas, the daughter of Fred Wiley and Opal Duncan Wiley.  She first married Merle Large on December 24, 1952.  Together they had eight children.  Merle and Dorothy later divorced, and she married Ed Hofman.  Ed later preceded her in death.

Through the years, Dorothy worked at various grocery stores and restaurants, but her primary job was taking care of her children.  She enjoyed decorating cakes and crocheting.  She made many afghans which were donated to area charities.  She was a member of the Elks Lodge and the V.F.W. Auxiliary and enjoyed participating in their charitable endeavors.

 

Survivors include six children, Dianna Brown (Russell), Auxvasse, Missouri, Curtis Large (Tammy), Beardstown, Illinois, Joyce Mills (Robert), Ft. Scott, Kansas, Gena Surratt (James), Meredosia, Illinois, Chuck Large (Beth) also of Meredosia and Fred Large of Ft. Scott, a son-in-law, Jim Brown also of Ft. Scott, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, Dale Wiley (Marie) and Lloyd Wiley all of Ft. Scott.

In addition to her husband, Ed, Dorothy was preceded in death by a son, Tom Large, a daughter, Susan Brown, a grandson, Aaron Brown, two brothers, Don and Larry Wiley and a sister-in-law, Jean Wiley.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 10^th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the West Liberty Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

HELEN ATTENDED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND GRADUATED FROM BURLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL IN 1946.

AS A YOUNG WOMAN, IN HIGH SCHOOL, SHE HELPED THE NEIGHBORS BY WATCHING THEIR CHILDREN,

CLEANING THEIR HOMES ETC. FOR THE GOING RATE OF $3.OO PER WEEK.  AFTER GRADUATION , SHE WAS ASKED TO DRIVE HER AUNT AND UNCLE, PETE AND MARIE FARNEY, TO ILLINOIS.  WHEN THEY RETURNED HOME, HER DAD HAD A JOB WAITING FOR HER BEGINNING THE FOLLOWING MONDAY AT THE FIRST STATE BANK IN KIOWA.  1946 WAS AN IMPORTANT YEAR TO HELEN AS SHE WAS BAPTIZED IN THE APOSTOLIC CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN  BURLINGTON, OK.  TWO YEARS LATER SHE MARRIED HUBER BENJAMIN FARNEY, THE LOVE OF HER LIFE, AND MOVED TO THE FARNEY HOME EAST OF KIOWA.

HELEN WORKED AT THE BANK OF KIOWA , DORIS FASHION SHOP, AND FISHER-WOOD HARDWARE, WHERE SHE WAS TOP SALESWOMAN DURING CHRISTMAS AND WON A BEDROOM SUITE.  LATER IN LIFE, SHE WORKED AT KIOWA HOSPITAL AS A SPECIAL, WHEN NEEDED TO CARE FOR TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS THAT NEEDED EXTRA CARE DURING THE NIGHT.

HELEN AND HUBER ENJOYED TRAVELING TOGETHER.  THERE WERE MANY ROAD TRIPS, AND TRIPS TO VISIT THEIR SIBLINGS.  A HIGHLIGHT WAS A MEMORABLE TRIP TO SWITZERLAND WITH ANNIE AND AARON YAUSSI(HUBER’S SISTER AND HUSBAND)

IN AUGUST 1985, HELEN AND HUBER OPENED THE COUNTRY CORRAL ANTIQUE SHOP.  THEY ENJOYED ATTENDING ANTIQUE SHOWS AND AUCTIONS,  COLLECTING MANY SPECIAL ITEMS TOGETHER.  HELEN HAD A VAST KNOWLEDGE AND EYE FOR UNIQUE ANTIQUES AND APPRECIATED THEIR VALUE.   SHE RETIRED IN 2012 AFTER HAVING OPEN HEART SURGERY.

OVER THE YEARS, SHE ENJOYED COOKING MANY MEALS FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.  SHE COULD PUT A MEAL TOGETHER AND ON THE TABLE IN 30 MINUTES.  SHE WAS A GRACIOUS HOSTESS.  FOR MANY YEARS, HELEN HOSTED A CHRISTMAS BRUNCH FOR THE LADIES OF THE APOSTOLIC CHRISTIAN CHURCH.

SHE ENJOYED SHOPPING FOR OTHERS AND TAKING FOOD TO THEIR HOMES WHEN THEY WERE ILL. HELEN WAS WELL KNOW AROUND KIOWA FOR HER FAMOUS FUDGE.  THOSE, LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE GIFTED WITH THE FUDGE, HAVE NOt FORGOTTEN THE DELICIOUS CONFECTION.

HELEN LOVED HER CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, BABYSITTING, ATTENDING THEIR SPORTS AND MUSICAL EVENTS. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO HER TO BE PRESENT FOR HER FAMILY.  SHE HAD A WAY OF MAKING EVERY DAY INTO SOMETHING FUN AND SPECIAL.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, May 5^th at the Apostolic Christian Church in Ft. Scott, Kansas.

A second service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 6^th at the Apostolic Christian Church in Kiowa, Kansas.

Private burial will take place in the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery in Burlington, Oklahoma.

Jimmy Duane Ford, age 71, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Monday, May 2, 2022, at Medicalodge of Ft. Scott.

He was born on February 26, 1951, in Red Key, IN, the son of Hubert Wilson Ford and Gladys Bernice Tabor Ford.

He married Neta Dame on August 3, 1968, in Lebanon, MO.  Jim worked most of his life as truck driver, 13 years being with the Earp Meat Company.  Following that, he built, opened, and operated his own mechanic shop.  He was known by friends and family as an excellent mechanic.

Jim enjoyed having his wife Neta cook for all the family at holiday meals.

 

Survivors include his wife Neta of the home; a son, Jimmy Ray Ford, Sr., Ft. Scott; a daughter Natonya Lyne Beerbower and husband Larry, Jr., Uniontown, KS; a nephew, Duane Glasscock, who was raised in the household, and wife Tawnya, AR; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and one more on the way; and several nieces and nephews who all adored him.

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Paul Edward “E” Hobbs, and Hubert Mitchell “Junior” Ford; 2 sisters, Vicky Lynn Ford, and infant Evelyn Kay Ford; and his parents.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, May 6^th, in the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Osaga Cemetery, Fulton, KS.

Mary Kathryn “Kaye” Beaman went to be with the Lord on April 28, 2022, after passing peacefully at the age of 93. Kaye was born in Fort Scott, KS on July 26, 1928.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald O. “Nate” Beaman, parents Everett and Ethel Henson, brother Everett Henson Jr., sister Jane Broeren, and nephew Bill Henson.

 

Kaye and Nate moved from Kansas to the Imperial Valley (CA) in 1955, where they lived in the cities of Holtville and El Centro. While in Holtville, she started a retail antique business named “Forty Karats”. Kaye was active in the El Centro Hospital Auxiliary for many years and also partnered in an antique store in that city. Kaye continued her business tradition after she and Nate returned to Kansas in 1995, operating “Mary Kaye’s Place” antique shop for several years in the city of Uniontown.

 

Kaye is survived by her four children: Jan Beaman of Uniontown, KS; Michael Beaman (wife – Teri) of Moreno Valley, CA; Curtis Beaman of Uniontown, KS; and Ty Beaman of San Diego, CA.  Her grandchildren are: Ryan Marini of Indio, CA; Anthony Marini of Palm Desert, CA; Katelyn Beaman of Riverside, CA; Carly Patchin (husband – Colin) of Riverside, CA; Travis Beaman (wife – Katherine) of Richmond, VA; Cristina Millan Beaman of Tucson, AZ; as well as six great grandchildren. Kaye’s family also includes nieces Carla Henson of W. Sacramento, CA and Deana Rice (Ohio), as well as cousins Billy Lowry of Redding, CA and Brad Finch (Philippines).

 

Pastor Marty DeWitt will officiate graveside services at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2022, at Uniontown Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning at the funeral home and family and friends will then leave for the cemetery at 10:30 a.m.

Remington Rose Meek, infant daughter of Tanner Meek and Elizabeth Rose Meek passed away shortly after birth on Monday, April 25, 2022, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada, Missouri.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by grandparents, Misty Miles of Ft. Scott, Joanie Rose and Shannon Parker both of Goodman, Missouri and great-grandparents, Trissa Bartlett, Randy Bartlett, Harry Meek and Bonnie Meek, all of Ft. Scott, Dennis and Debbie Rose of Goodman, Missouri and Mary Parker of Ranger, West Virginia.  Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Curtis Meek.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 P.M. Tuesday, May 3^rd at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Patricia “Pat” Kay Payne, 80, of Fort Scott, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Medicalodge in Fort Scott, Kansas. She was born June 7, 1941, in Fort Scott, Kansas to Earl and Dorene Parks.

 

Pat held many titles throughout her life: daughter, mother, “Ms. Pat”, but perhaps her favorite was grandmother. From school programs to sporting events to weddings, she was there for them all and usually two hours early to get a good parking spot. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but perhaps her most special connection was with her great-grandson, Ridley. So much so that she paid extra to have his name on her license plate.

 

Aside from loving her family, Pat loved her friends. If she wasn’t at the beauty shop or grocery store, Pat was on the phone talking to her friends. She was a woman of many words with some being unrepeatable. Pat also loved her dog Penny, the casino and a good meal shared with loved ones. She loved music, and she loved to dance, specifically square-dance. She also enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs, The Weather Channel and any old western movie.

 

Pat is survived by one daughter, Jerri Lynn Halsey and husband Scott of Fort Scott, Kansas; three grandchildren Chase Halsey (Kyla) and Courtney Goucher (Michael) both of Fort Scott, Kansas and Samantha Halsey of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Delphine Parks and several nieces and nephews.

Patricia was proceeded in death by her parents and one brother, Ronald Parks.

 

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 27th, in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Estelle Cox, age 81, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, took her Heavenly Father by the hand and went home to Heaven on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at the Guest Home Estates in Ft. Scott.

She was born May 3, 1940, in Lutz, Tennessee, the daughter of LeRoy White and Myrtle Petty White.

Estelle first married Arthur I. Gibbs.  Together they had two daughters, April and Sandy.  Arthur preceded her in death on September 24, 1990.

She later married Robert S. Cox on November 13, 1998.

He passed away on February 17, 2012.

Estelle was a woman of faith, and her family finds comfort knowing that she is in Heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

 

Survivors include her daughters, April Jacobs (Trevor) and Sandy Gibbs all of Ft. Scott; six grandchildren, Cody (Olivia), Johnathan (Kerri), Gage, Abby, Kolby and Kyra and three great-grandsons, Jason, Luke and Nathan.  Also surviving are two sisters, Lynn Reynolds, Maryland Heights, Missouri and Nell Welch (Doug), Pilot Knob, Missouri and two sisters-in-law, Dot White, Louisburg, Kansas and Tita White, Florissant, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Bobby, Roland and Roy White.

 

Trevor Jacobs will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 29^th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 9:00 A.M. until service time at the chapel.

Following services, there will be cremation and private burial will take place in the U. S. National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Patricia Kay Payne, age 80, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Medicalodge of Ft. Scott.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 27^th, in the Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Cheney Witt Chapel from 10:00 AM until leaving for the cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to either Integrity Hospice or Medicalodge Activity Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main, Ft. Scott, KS 66701.
