42nd Annual Candlelight Tour Tickets On Sale November 1
Be an Active Part of History this Holiday Season
Wednesday, November 1, 2023, tickets for Fort Scott National Historic Site’s 42nd Annual Candlelight Tour go on sale. Tickets are available by calling the fort at 620-223-0310 (with a major credit card) or by stopping by the Visitor Center on Old Fort Blvd. Tickets are $8.00 per person and non-refundable, children 5 and under are free. It is recommended that you get your tickets early to ensure your choice of tour times, as this event frequently sells out.
The 42nd Annual Candlelight Tour is Friday and Saturday, December 1 and 2, 2023. Tours on December 1 will begin at 6:30 pm and leave every 15 minutes until 9 pm. On Saturday, December 2, the tours will start at 5 pm with the final tour leaving at 9 pm. Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow time to park, present/pick up your ticket, and get oriented. Participants are advised to please dress for the weather and conditions, as the entire tour will be outside and on sidewalks.
1,000 candle lanterns illuminate the site and reenactors (including you) bring the fort to life.
This year’s tour is about Health and Wellness. During the tour, you will be immersed in ways people have historically been provided the opportunity to be healthy and embrace happiness, despite their struggles.
From November 1-March 31, Fort Scott National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service, will be open for its winter hours of operation. The site exhibit areas and visitor center are open daily from 8:30 am-4:30 pm. The park grounds are open daily from ½ hour before sunrise until ½ hour after sunset. Shop, Swine and Swig Coming to the River Room Today
A holiday vendor event is happening today, October 19, at the River Room from 5 to 8 p.m.
Shop, Swig, and Swine is being organized by Shelby Defebaugh, who is a vendor herself. “I make pens, lanyards, keychains and wristlets. Customization is welcome,” she said.
“In August I started organizing the event,” Defebaugh said. “When you are a vendor… you become like a community.” And several vendors were interested.
The River Room is located at the corner of National Avenue and Oak Street on Fort Scott’s north end. The event is from 5-8 p.m. with no cost to attendees.
“I know everyone is busy,” she said. “I felt like a Thursday evening, when you get off work, go shop with girlfriends and grab some food to take home.”
The name “Shop, Swig and Swine” is because “You can shop, and have adult beverages and Brickstreet BBQ will have a concession bar and food,” Defebaugh said.
Defebaugh said she wanted to thank Cathy Bishop, event coordinator at the River Room, and the Fort Scott Tribune for their help with the event.
Vendors pay $40 per booth.
However, she is giving booth space for free to the Fort Scott High School Art Club for a fundraiser which is a Christmas scene photo.

Bourbon County Community Theatre Presents Voices from the Grave Tour
The newly formed Bourbon County Community Theatre, LLC presents their inaugural production entitled Voices from the Grave.
Voices from the Grave takes place from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Riverfront Park in Fort Scott, KS. Guests will enjoy a guided walking tour of short acting vignettes centering around stories of murder and mayhem in Fort Scott. Scenes were written by the students in the Advanced Drama class at Fort Scott High School and are based off of stories from local author Brian Allen’s books about Fort Scott.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students and are available from the Chamber of Commerce in Fort Scott. Tour times must be pre-scheduled and run every 10 minutes. Parents must accompany children under the age of 14.

Live Professional Wrestling returns to Ft. Scott at Memorial Hall!
Harley Race’s World League Wrestling comes to Ft. Scott on Saturday, October 21st!
Professional Wrestling has been a staple in the Midwest of America for decades. Make the rounds from city to city, town to town, generations of families have been going to live pro-wrestling events for decades all over America, including Ft. Scott, KS. On Saturday October 21st, the first wrestling event to take place in decades will be held at the historic Memorial Hall.
Harley Race’s World League Wrestling is coming to town, and when people hear the name Harley Race, they know there is a level quality that comes along with it. Created by the 8-Time NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion and WWE Hall of Famer, Harley Race started WLW in 1999 with the intentions of giving fans an alternative that is based around what fans want to see – true professional wrestling. Today, the promotion is as strong as ever and is looking forward to coming to Memorial Hall and Ft. Scott.
“Wrestling fans are in for a treat come October 21st” said WLW wrestler Leland Race, “it has been close to 40 years since professional wrestling has been at Memorial Hall and we are looking forward to showing up and showing out!”
Matches scheduled to take place include WLW Heavyweight Champion Superstar Steve defending his championship against Ben Trust, WLW Tag-Team Champions Leland Race and Camaro Jackson defending their championships against The Premiere (SK Bishop and Campbell Myers). Other wrestlers scheduled to appear include Moses “The Deliverer”, Rahim de la Suede, Kenny Alfonso, Aden Riley, and more!
This event will be taped for the World League Wrestling flagship television program – “SHOWDOWN” – that currently airs in 15 markets across America including St. Louis, MO, Columbia, MO, Dallas, TX, New York, NY, Indianapolis, IN, and many more.

Third Street Park Has New Playground Equipment
Third Street Park is ready for the community to enjoy.
New children’s play equipment with mulching and new stairs leading to the ballpark on Third Street was recently completed.
“This is a $92,000 project that was funded by the Patterson Family Foundation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Pathways to a Healthy Kansas, and a contribution from The City of Fort Scott,” Rachel Carpenter, director of the Healthy Bourbon Action Team (HBCAT), who is spearheading the project, said.
“The playground is open to the public!” she said.
The need for Third Street Park’s improvement project was identified by the community through public forums, surveys, and a steering committee, according to Carpenter, in a prior press release.
A Building Up Our Neighborhoods Placemaking project has already repaired the bathrooms and existing structures, including the basketball goal. Last month stairs were made from the upper level of the park to the lower level.
Community members were able to develop priorities that they wanted to see happen at the park, Carpenter said in a prior press release. Those priorities:
- Repairing the bathrooms
- Repairing the existing structures
- Repairing the basketball goal
- Adding additional playground structures
- Adding stairs

Tyler Sharp, Marbery Construction, Fort Scott, lays straw to prevent erosion following the building of the concrete stairs from the upper-level playground to the lower-level ball field at Third Street Park on Sept. 15.
“Fort Scott Kiwanis provided volunteers to fix the existing structures, the basketball goals, and paint the bathrooms,” she said. “The City of Fort Scott provided an additional $10,000 that will go towards fixing up the bathrooms, fixing the pavilion floor, and surfacing for the existing structures.”
‘We are still collaborating with the City of Fort Scott to update the fixtures of the bathroom and fix the pavilion floor,” Carpenter said.
Last week, Playscapes, Yates Center, installed the new playground structures and put down the rubber mulch surfacing.
The playground structures include a Temple Trolley, a Swizzler, and two bouncers.
Pioneer Harvest Fiesta Starts Today at Bourbon County Fairgrounds
Come and visit the Pioneer Harvest Fiesta! Today is the first day! The quilt show opens from 9am to 4pm today and Saturday. Sunday’s hours are noon to 3pm. There are many beautiful quilts to admire. Cassino Richardson is here with her fabrics, precuts, books and more. Erica of Nine Patch Quilt Shop has a variety of Christmas gifts and ideas to choose from. Watch Bobbi Schroeder do wonders with her quilting machine. At 1pm Saturday come to listen to Paul Milks as he tells us of his journey with Cross Stitch. He has beautiful designs for you to see.
Don’t forget the bean feed Friday evening complete with cornbread and all the add ons. It is free with a Pioneer Harvest 2023 Collector button. $5 gives you a button which gets you in the show all three days. What a deal! There is also a car show on Saturday off Eddy Street at the north end of the fairgrounds.

Bourbon County Community Theatre: Voices From the Grave, Oct. 28
The newly formed Bourbon County Community Theatre is looking for volunteers for its inaugural event, “Voices from the Grave,” on the evening of Saturday, October 28th, in the Riverfront Park.
Actors will memorize and present a short script describing a scene or “vignette” based on a story of murder or mayhem in Fort Scott’s history. Guests will be escorted through the park to visit each vignette and hear the story.
Leaders will be costumed “characters” who guide visitors from vignette to vignette.

CATO’S PIONEER PAST COMES ALIVE
The annual Cato Days will be presented by the Cato Historical Preservation Association on Saturday October 21st from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
The annual Cato Days will be held on Saturday October 21st from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Cato, Kansas. This free event is presented by the Cato Historical Preservation Association to promote Cato’s pioneer history.
Cato Days starts with registration at 9 a.m. followed at 9:30 by old time hymns performed by Ralph Carlson and Friends in the historic Cato Christian Church. Ann Rawlins will talk about the history of the church. At 10:45, in the Old Stone School, Anna Portwood Swank, Elizabeth Portwood Thompson and Jamie Thompson will talk about the school and Jerry Lomshek will discuss Cato’s early history and its involvement in Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War. Musical entertainment will be presented outdoors at 11:45, where drinks and ham‘n beans cooked by Bob “Buck” Rowland of Arma will be available. At 12:30 there will be a raffle for a beautiful quilt donated by Sue James of Texas. All proceeds go to the preservation of Cato’s historic buildings. The highlight of the event will be the hayrack wagon ride to various local sites of historical interest at 1 p.m.
Fourth and Fifth graders from local schools will have their own Cato Day on Thursday, October 19th.
Cato is in the northern part of Crawford County off Hwy 69. From Hwy 69, turn west on 720th avenue and follow the signs to Cato. Directions can be found at http://catoschool.com/ . Cato is an open-air museum and its buildings are only open to the public a few times a year so don’t miss this unique opportunity to spend an afternoon of entertainment and enlightenment in historic Cato. The Cato Historical Preservation Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the buildings and history of Cato and the surrounding areas.
